Visiting Mauna Kea for sunset? Make sure to plan ahead
MAUNA KEA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Are you planning a trip to visit Maunakea during sunset hours? If so, University of Hawaii at Hilo officials advise you plan ahead to avoid all the said traffic on Maunakea Access Road, the Maunakea Visitor Center and the summit area has seen an increase in traffic, particularly during sunset hours on weekends and holidays.
And it's not just during sunset. Larger crowds and heavier traffic should also be expected when Mauna Kea sees snow.

Visitors and residents planning their Mauna Kea trip are urged to carpool whenever possible and allow extra travel time to secure legal parking.
Officials remind the public that parking is only allowed in designated areas at the summit and the Visitor Center.
Maunakea Rangers will be on site to help direct traffic flow, ensure safety, assist guests and protect natural and cultural resources.
All visitors are encouraged to plan for the rapidly changing weather patterns such as freezing temperatures, strong winds and snow and icy roads.
