Toulouse hooker Mauvaka out of Champions Cup semi
FRANCE HOOKER PEATO Peato Mauvaka will miss Toulouse's Champions Cup semi-final against Bordeaux-Begles and will likely miss the remainder of the season because of a knee injury, the Top 14 leaders announced on Wednesday. Mauvaka was seriously injured in training on Tuesday and while Toulouse have said he is set to be out of action for several months, they have not specified the full nature of the injury. Rugby newspaper Midi-Olympique, however, has suggested he damaged his cruciate ligament which, if correct, would mean he is unlikely to play again this season. Advertisement The 28-year-old, who has 42 caps, was a regular starter during the last Six Nations although he picked up a three-week suspension for foul play in the final match against Scotland. His place in the Toulouse starting line-up for Sunday's semi-final will pass to Julien Marchand, who also shares the hooking duties with France. Toulouse have already lost Antoine Dupont to a cruciate ligament this season with their totemic scrum-half injured in the Six Nations game against Ireland. Dupont is not expected to play again before November. Adding to their woes, Toulouse, the defending champions, will also be without Scotland back Blair Kinghorn, another to suffer a knee injury. International flier Ange Capuozzo, however, has recovered from a right ankle injury and is expected to feature. – © AFP 2025

Peato Mauvaka handed three-week ban for ‘flying headbutt' on Ben White
However, the 28-year-old was promptly cited after France's 35-16 victory, which sealed the Six Nations title for Fabien Galthié's side, and has been found guilty of foul play contrary to law 9.12. This dictates that a player 'must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes, but is not limited to, biting, punching, contact with the eye or eye area, striking with any part of the arm, shoulder, head or knee[s], stamping, trampling, tripping or kicking.' The verdict of a three-person disciplinary panel, comprising Jennifer Donovan (Ireland) as well as two former men's internationals in John Langford of Australia and Leon Lloyd of England, infers that they believed Mauvaka to be deserving of a red card. Mauvaka, whose six-week sanction was halved because of remorse and a clean record, will now miss three games for his club, Toulouse; their Top 14 clashes against Bordeaux-Bègles and Pau before a Champions Cup last-16 tie against Sale Sharks. Fraser Brown, the former Scotland hooker, had been among those to condemn Mauvaka's actions on Saturday night. 'Ben White is laying on the floor and Peato Mauvaka dives at him,' Brown said. 'It's a flying headbutt straight to the face. 'That's a straight red card. The whistle has gone. It's direct head contact – I cannot agree with this process.' Rory Darge, the Scotland captain, labelled it as 'an intentional headbutt', with head coach Gregor Townsend querying how the punishment was not upgraded. 'The decision not to raise it to a red card was because there was not excessive force,' he said. 'I'm not sure that's the criteria for a non-tackle incident. It shouldn't be anything to do with the force involved. 'I don't know how it wasn't raised to a red card. Whether it affected the final result, who knows? France deserved their victory and are deserved champions.'

France hooker Mauvaka banned 3 games for head-first strike in Six Nations
DUBLIN (AP) — France hooker Peato Mauvaka was banned for three games on Thursday for his controversial head-first strike against Scotland in the Six Nations last weekend. Mauvaka was yellow-carded for launching himself at scrumhalf Ben White while both were lying on the ground. The incident was deliberate and after the whistle. Referee Matthew Carley issued a yellow card and sent it to a bunker review. The bunker upheld the yellow and didn't upgrade to red — as many expected — because 'the danger was not high.' The decision was kind to Mauvaka and France. Instead of losing a man for the last hour of the match on Saturday at Stade de France, the French were inconvenienced for only 10 minutes. France beat Scotland 35-16 and clinched its first Six Nations title since 2022. The citing commissioner showed it disagreed with the ruling by sending Mauvaka to a disciplinary hearing, where the citing was upheld. Because Mauvaka was remorseful and had a clean record, his sanction was halved from a starting point of six weeks. He will miss three games for his Toulouse club. On Tuesday, Italy forwards Ross Vintcent and Giacomo Nicotera were suspended for three and four games respectively for their red cards against Ireland in Rome. Vintcent was initially yellow-carded for a head-on-head tackle of Hugo Keenan. The bunker upgraded it to a 20-minute red. Nicotera also had a yellow changed to red after he made contact with Peter O'Mahony's head in a ruck at the end of the game. They will miss games for Exeter and Stade Francais. ___

France hooker Mauvaka gets three-match ban
March 20 (Reuters) - France hooker Peato Mauvaka was suspended for three matches for foul play in the final Six Nations match against Scotland, an independent disciplinary meeting ruled on Thursday. Mauvaka was cited after he received a yellow card in the 21st minute for head-butting Ben White, and looked relieved when the bunker review did not upgrade the sanction to a red card. The decision allowed Mauvaka to return to the action after 10 minutes and France secured a 35-16 victory to win the Six Nations title. The disciplinary committee upheld the citing and determined that the low-range entry point of six weeks/matches was appropriate. A 50% reduction was applied after the player accepted he committed an act of foul play along with other mitigating factors including his remorse and previous clean record. Mauvaka will miss the next three games for his club Toulouse, against Bordeaux Begles and Pau in the Top 14 and the Champions Cup match against Sale Sharks.
