HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A trip to the gas station turned into a life-changing moment for one Huntersville man. Kenneth Dormady scratched off a $1 million top prize on a $30 lottery ticket! He picked up the lucky Max-A-Million ticket at the Gas House on Hambright Road. Officials said when he realized he'd hit the jackpot, he made his way to lottery headquarters in Raleigh to claim his prize. He had a decision to make: take $50,000 a year for the next 20 years, or go with a one-time lump sum of $600,000. Dormady chose the lump sum and, after taxes, walked away with $430,508. Education Lottery A lottery player followed his instinct — and scored a $1 million prize in North Carolina. 'It was like a once-in-a-lifetime dream,' winner Kenneth Formyduval told the N.C. Education Lottery. Formyduval hit the jackpot after he stopped at a Minuteman Food Mart in Whiteville, a roughly 115-mile drive south from Raleigh. While there, he felt drawn to a ticket for the Max-A-Million game. 'I just got a wild hair and decided to buy one,' the prize winner, who lives in Whiteville, told lottery officials in a May 6 news release. 'Something just told me to get that ticket.' Kenneth Formyduval of Whiteville bought a $30 MAX-A-MILLION scratch-off from Minuteman Food Mart on South Madison Street and won a $1 million top prize! 'It was like a once-in-a-lifetime dream,' he said. Now he is planning to pay off his truck. 'He gave me a fist bump,' the lucky winner told lottery officials. Formyduval — who chose to take his prize as a lump sum of $600,000 — kept $430,508 after taxes. Now, he hopes to put the money toward his truck or a new house. It's not the first time someone got richer after following their intuition. Woman buys her first $30 NC lottery ticket and wins the game's top prize
A typically frugal lottery player threw caution to the wind at a gas station by spending $30 on a single ticket, and it paid off with a stunning seven-figure win, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery. Stephanie Marquez of Cary says her approach to lottery scratch offs is to spend no more than $10, but something came over her at the Xpress Mart on North Sharon Amity Road in Charlotte 'I guess I just thought, 'Shoot your shot,'' Marquez said in a May 2 news release. 'That was my first time buying that one.' The $30 Max-A-Million ticket beat odds of 1 in 363,970.8 to win her $1 million, which is the game's top prize. 'I was just kind of numb. I kept thinking, 'That can't be real,'' she told lottery officials. Marquez claimed her money Friday, May 2, at lottery headquarters in Raleigh and she was given a choice of taking a lump sum or getting a $50,000 annuity for the next 20 years. 'She chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $430,508,' lottery officials said. Marquez is a a grandmother of two and her plan is to use some of the money for their college education, officials said. 'This is a really good thing for us right now,' she said in the release.
