Lakers 2024-25 season player grades: Jordan Goodwin

While the Feb. 1 trade that brought the Los Angeles Lakers Luka Dončić gave them a young generational superstar, it also made them a thinner team, especially in the backcourt, as it cost them emerging 3-and-D wing Max Christie. On Feb. 7, they called up Jordan Goodwin from the G League and signed him to a two-way contract. The 6-foot-5 guard quickly made a positive contribution and somewhat filled the hole that Christie's departure created. Advertisement While he isn't quite the player Christie was becoming, he has shown some promise as a player who can help out moving forward. Jordan Goodwin's season stats In 29 regular-season games, Goodwin averaged 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 18.7 minutes a game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 38.2% from 3-point range. In the first round of the NBA playoffs versus the Minnesota Timberwolves, he averaged 0.8 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.3 steals and 0.3 blocks in 7.8 minutes a game while shooting 20% from the field. Overall analysis Goodwin isn't the most skilled player, but he displayed plenty of hustle, especially on the offensive boards. He also made a nice effort on the defensive end, and in doing so, he helped form a gritty second unit for the Lakers that included Dorian Finney-Smith, Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent, all of whom brought hustle and defense. Advertisement Although he's not a high-volume 3-point shooter, he seemed to start developing into a reliable outside shooter as time went on. Goodwin will turn 27 years of age in late October, so while he's young, he also has some experience. He spent parts of three previous seasons with the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies, but he likely showed more with the Lakers than he did with his previous teams. Goodwin's contract situation Goodwin has a team option for next season. Bleacher Report insider Eric Pincus implied in a recent article that the Lakers are likely to keep him for next season, which would seem like a good idea. Advertisement The franchise has found diamonds in the rough as far as undrafted players such as Goodwin before, and he could be their next find, especially since they have reportedly established a player development system. With a reported wingspan of 6-foot-10, he should be able to become a serviceable player off the bench moving forward, including during the playoffs, as long as he puts in plenty of work. In return to L.A., Anthony Davis recounts 'all the emotions' since his shocking trade

About halfway through the first quarter of Tuesday night's game, Anthony Davis looked up at the video board inside Arena and watched a tribute the Lakers produced for him. He was being recognized by his former team for his 5 ½ years in L.A. But the reality is the reality — Davis was receiving this homage because he was no longer a Laker, because he had been traded to the Dallas Mavericks in a shocking, late-night blockbuster deal along with Max Christie and a first-round draft pick for generational talent Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris. So, as Davis watched the video, he smiled and waved to the crowd that was giving him a standing ovation, fully enjoying the moment despite the fact he was unable to play in his return because of an adductor strain. 'If I was playing, it would have been a little bit more emotional for me,' Davis told The Times. 'Obviously, it was emotional for the time I had here. But the video was fire! The love from the crowd was fire! The ovation was fire! Read more: Luka Doncic struggles against his old team, but LeBron James' big fourth lifts Lakers 'I don't know. I haven't processed it. I might have to watch it again. I'm just in the midst of a game. I'm trying to win a basketball game. So, I couldn't really get a chance to like, really, dissect the video and feel what I wanted to feel. But that's the first time I had that, and I think that it was really dope for the Lakers to do, obviously, and I'm honored and appreciative, for them even considering to do that for me.' It has been 3½ weeks since the trade that rocked the NBA. Davis says he processed it almost immediately and understood it was "the nature of the business.' Yes, he won a championship for the Lakers alongside LeBron James in 2020. Yes, he was a five-time All-NBA and all-defensive team player. Yes, he was a 10-time All-Star and a member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team. Still, Davis was moved for another player. 'They wanted who they wanted. They did what they had to do," Davis said. "I don't know if they had to, but it's what they wanted to do. I moved on. I got a wife and kids to worry about, you know what I'm saying? And I'm figuring out how I'm going to get them to Dallas and get adjusted to that. 'It's over with, and I'm moving on with my new team and what we got going on.' Davis watched the Lakers defeat the Knicks in New York on Feb. 1 from home in Los Angeles while recovering from an abdominal strain and texted teammates to congratulate them. His phone rang about an hour later. It was Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka informing Davis about the trade. Read more: Max Christie returns home to L.A. … as a visitor with the Mavericks Davis was in disbelief, totally caught off guard. He FaceTimed James, hoping his friend could share something about what had happened and why. 'When it happened, I honestly didn't know s—,' Davis recalled while standing in the hallways of Arena following the Lakers' 107-99 win. 'He's been my running mate for six years ... so the first thing I wanted to do was call him. ... Obviously, I know there are going to be a lot of political things in the front office when they talk to me. 'The front office has to do what it has to do and obviously they're going to do what's best for the organization. So I don't know if I ever got the 'real' about any of it. I don't know what's true or what's not, coming from upstairs. So, my thing is I'm gonna go to my counterpart who I've been running with and see what's going on, get his reaction and that's all it was. We had a conversation. That was it. 'Everybody's saying nobody knew and all this other s—. I just don't believe it. But, hey man, I'm past that. I'm ready to move forward with Dallas, try to get a championship there with these guys. First off, getting back on the floor and get ready to compete. All the emotions, that s— lasted that night when it was just a shock.' After the shock wore off, Davis said he was on a flight Sunday morning to Dallas to take his physical. And on Monday morning, Davis flew to Philadelphia to join his new mates for Dallas' game against the 76ers. He talked with Dallas coach Jason Kidd, who had been an assistant for the Lakers when they won the 2020 championship. He talked with Nico Harrison, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations and general manager who made the trade heard around the world. There was stress and pressure for all of them to face back in Dallas , for trading away an international superstar who had just led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season. When the Mavericks prepared to play their first home game since the trade on Feb. 8, the fans had planned a protest. Davis was aware, but his main concern was playing in the game and playing up to his standards. Read more: LeBron and Bronny James file response to car crash lawsuit, denying 'each and every allegation' He came out strong, producing 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks. At one point during the first quarter, Davis turned to the crowd and yelled, "I'm here!" during a timeout. The fans gave him a standing ovation. 'I just wanted to be a guy that they can rely on, a guy that's gonna bring energy and kind of reassure them like, 'Yeah, I understand who we got rid of,' but also want to give the fans hope, and I think I did that," Davis said. He played 31 minutes before suffering the adductor injury. "Obviously the unfortunate injury, but in that time that they saw me they realized how good we can be when we're fully healthy," Davis said. "We're gonna get back to that. So, there's a lot of emotions involved just from the Dallas standpoint of me wanting to show the team why Nico did what he did.' The Mavericks pulled out a late victory against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday for their third win in four games. They allowed the Warriors to briefly lead in the fourth quarter after leading by 12 points but went ahead for good on a floater with 25.6 seconds left to play. Kyrie Irving produced a game-high 42 points and seven rebounds, while Klay Thompson and Max Christie both added 17 points to lead the Mavericks. Watch live: Dallas Mavericks introduce Anthony Davis as fans continue to protest Luka Doncic trade

DALLAS – Anthony Davis will face the media for the first time as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, days after the Los Angeles Lakers traded him to the Mavs as part of a package for Luka Doncic. Davis, 31, has been an NBA All-Star 10 times and an All-NBA player five times. He was on the Lakers team that won the 2020 NBA Championship in the COVID bubble and won a gold medal with the U.S. Men's Basketball Team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The trade, which shocked the sports world, also saw Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris head from Dallas to L.A. The Mavs also received Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick. Mavs General Manager Nico Harrison, who orchestrated the trade, told ESPN that the deal sets the team up for present and future success. "I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance," Harrison said. So far, Mavericks fans have not been convinced. Since the trade was announced, fans have protested in front of the American Airlines Center and launched a billboard campaign aimed at team management. Celestial Beerworks, a brewery in Dallas' Design District, quickly developed a new beer called " Sell The Team." They describe it as a double hazy IPA with 7.7% alcohol by volume, a nod to Doncic's jersey number. Mavs fans will have yet another say on Saturday afternoon when the team plays its first home game since the trade, hosting the Houston Rockets. What: Introductory press conference for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and Caleb Martin Date: Friday, Feb. 7 Time: 1 p.m. Location: Dallas Mavericks practice facility Note: Streaming plans are subject to change
