Corpus Christi police investigating shooting involving car clubs on Shoreline Boulevard
Two men went to the hospital with gunshot wounds after a shooting involving members of car clubs early in the morning of May 18, according to the Corpus Christi Police Department. At about 4:40 a.m. that day, police responded to a call at a local hospital in reference to the two individuals, an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, according to a news release published that morning. Police said the men are in stable condition after the shooting. According to the preliminary investigation, a group of individuals belonging to different car clubs gathered in the 100 block of Shoreline Boulevard when, for unknown reasons, individuals began shooting at each other. Senior officer Jennifer Collier said that police do not know if the victims were specifically involved in a car club, but that they were at the location when the shooting happened. The investigation is still in the early stages, police said. Police said they are working on the scene and encourage anyone with information to call detectives at 361-886-2840. Romanian top court rejects challenge to annul presidential election
BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania's top court unanimously rejected as unfounded a request to cancel a May 18 presidential election that was won by centrist independent Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan, it said in a statement on Thursday. Romania's defeated hard-right contender George Simion had filed the request alleging interference by France and Moldova. Independent observers have said the election was well-organized. The court will validate the election result on Thursday with Dan in attendance.

South Korean presidential candidates honor victims of 1980 pro-democracy uprising
Some presidential candidates honored victims of the pro-democracy uprising in Gwangju on Sunday by visiting a cemetery where protesters who were killed 45 years ago were laid. Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, the minor New Reform Party's Lee Jun-seok and the minor Justice Party's Kwon Young-kook were among some 2,500 attendees who took part in the ceremony at the May 18th National Cemetery. On May 18, 1980, demonstrators in Gwangju, including students, protested against the then ruling junta led by Chun Doo-hwan, who seized power in a military coup the previous year. The military conducted a bloody crackdown, leaving hundreds dead, Yonhap news agency reported. "Going toward the future by respecting others' differences and sharing their pain is the true way to repay for Gwangju that May," acting President Lee Ju-ho said at the ceremony. "The spirit of solidarity and unity that Gwangju demonstrated that May 45 years ago is a teaching that is needed today." The ceremony featured various performances dedicated to activists who died during the uprising, including Moon Jae-hak, who was the inspiration for a character in Nobel literature laureate Han Kang's novel "Human Acts." The event concluded with all of the participants, including the presidential candidates, acting President Lee and National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik, singing the song "March for the Beloved" that symbolises the pro-democracy uprising. Meanwhile, the May 18 Foundation, a civic group dedicated to commemorating the pro-democracy movement, expressed "strong regret" over Lee's speech, saying that it did not mention efforts to support the movement, such as outlining the May 18 spirit in the Constitution. The government has held a ceremony marking the pro-democracy uprising every year after May 18 was designated as a memorial day in 1997.

Capital One's $35 Billion Discover Acquisition Is Set to Close on Sunday. Here's What That Means for You
CNET/Getty Images Capital One's deal to acquire Discover closes Sunday, May 18. The acquisition was cleared by federal regulators last month, so the two credit card giants are slated to merge. "The combination of our two great companies will increase competition in payment networks [and] offer a wider range of products to our customers," Michael Shepherd, interim CEO and president of Discover, said in an April press release. In February 2024, Capital One announced its plans to purchase Discover for $35.3 billion. Some experts have argued that the merger isn't good news for consumers, since Capital One is the third-largest credit card company, and Discover is one of only four credit card networks. That could mean less competition among credit card companies, leading to higher prices and fees. On the other hand, the deal could give Discover the additional backing it needs to compete with Visa and Mastercard, which some policymakers say have a duopoly on the credit card network market. American Express, the third-largest network, is both a payment network and an issuer, like Discover. More competition among payment networks could lead to lower swipe fees, which retailers could potentially pass along to cardholders. Though it's unclear exactly what changes are coming for cardholders, we'll likely start learning more within a month. What's next for Capital One and Discover credit cardholders? Your Capital One cards will likely change card networks, from Visa or Mastercard to the Discover network, sometime after the May 18 closing. This could impact not only some of the card perks and protections, but also where it's accepted. Discover has a narrower acceptance rate than Visa and Mastercard, especially outside of the US. Any changes won't be immediate, though. In the press release, Capital One said no changes will come now or immediately following the closing date. Your card issuer will alert you to changes ahead of time, so just watch for communications. In JD Power's annual customer satisfaction study of card issuers, both Discovery and Capital One rank highly in customer service, so customers shouldn't expect any new hardships after the deal goes through. The biggest change will be to your card's network. Since Capital One doesn't have a network of its own like American Express, acquiring Discover provides a missing piece. At the same time, Capital One could expand Discover's reach by adding its cards to that network. While acceptance rates could change, if you're planning a trip this summer and are worried about Discover's acceptance rate overseas, consider applying for a credit card on the Visa, Amex or Mastercard network.
