McAteer's Restaurant serves corned beef and potatoes for St. Patrick's Day

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — McAteer's Restaurant got in the Irish spirit for St. Patrick's Day this year serving things like corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes all day along with decorations and customers all decked out in green. Fairmont resident Larry Koay came with his bagpipe to perform for the restaurant. Owner Tim McAteer told 12 News about his pride in his Irish heritage and about the history of Irish people in north central West Virginia, saying that many Irish people came to work for the railroad in Mannington. He also talked about how the location right across the street from McAteer's was formally an Irish dairy farm that operated for many years. North Marion High School Marching Band to perform in Pearl Harbor Parade McAteer's family started the restaurant in 1958, and since then, they've developed a local clientele from the nearby university and hospital. The restaurant's St. Patrick's Day tradition started after McAteer visited Ireland in the 80s and wanted to bring a piece of Ireland back home. McAteer said that north central West Virginia actually reminds him of Ireland. 'If you go to Ireland and you see it, you know why they came here. We have the same green fields, we have the same beautiful structure,' McAteer said. 'It was jobs but then it was also the scenery, and the landscape is just similar.'
