Four remain as PIAA semifinals approach

ALTOONA (WTAJ) — Just four teams remain representing central Pennsylvania in the PIAA state basketball tournament as we move into the semifinal round. The four programs, all girls teams, include Bishop McCort, Berlin-Brothersvalley, Bishop Guilfoyle and Bishop Carroll. In Class 2A, Berlin plays Mountain View Friday at Mechanicsburg High School. The game tips off at 6:30. Berlin, led by the Prosser sisters is 25-2, and haven't lost since December, 6. The Mountaineers have won their state tournament matchups by an average of 16 points and may very well be the team to beat in Class 2A. But Mountain View, the District 2 champion, is coming off a 32-14 quarterfinal win over Williams Valley. The Eagles are giving up just 30 points per game. The winner of Berlin and Mountain View will play the winner of Bishop McCort and Penns Manor in the 2A championship. That game will be played at Central Cambria High School on Friday at 7:00 p.m. A McCort-Berlin championship is juicy for the 814, but the Crushers will have to take down the District 6 runners-up Penns Manor, again, in a District 6 championship rematch. Back in February at Mount Aloysius, McCort held off Comets 54-49 in a tight battle. After beating the defending state champs, Kennedy Catholic, McCort is in its best position to get back to the PIAA championship since 2017. The 2A title game is Thursday, March 27 at the Giant Center. On Saturday in class 1A, we get a second District 6 championship rematch when Bishop Guilfoyle plays Bishop Carroll at Altoona High School. The defending 1A champion Marauders are 2-0 this season against the Huskies, winning, on average, by 20 points. But before writing off the Huskies against BG, consider this, Carroll has won its three state games by an average of 30 points and is playing its best basketball of the season right now. The winner of this matchup advances to the 1A championship on Friday, March 28 in Hershey. That team will play the winner of Linville Hill and Lourdes Regional. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
