Donation needs continue in McDowell County

MCDOWELL COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — Many people in local communities are in need of aid after flooding swept through the region in February. According to posts on various Facebook pages, such as the McDowell County Commission and Delegate David Green – McDowell County, donations are being gathered to help those who were affected by the flooding that hit McDowell County and left an impact on those who live in the local communities. Types of donations communities need after a disaster Donations can include items such as: Dehumidifiers Fans Propane and electric heaters Propane Drying agents such as DampRid Bleach Lime Large push brooms Large squeegee with a broom handle Brooms Mops Shovels Rakes Buckets Gloves Cleaning supplies Laundry supplies Tarps Rags WVNS 59News southern West Virginia Disaster Relief A post on the McDowell County Commission's Facebook page stated that the McDowell County Office of Emergency Services are gathering donations for the replacement of private bridges in McDowell County due to the large number of bridges that need repaired or replaced. These types of donation items, which can only be dropped off at the old Walmart location in Kimball, can include: Bridge supports Beams Drainage pipes Additional items/hardware that can be used for bridge replacements The McDowell County Commission's Facebook page stated that people with equipment, or anyone who wants to help replace private bridges, are also welcome to help. People can contact the McDowell County Office of Emergency Services at the non-emergency help line at 888-929-4966, option 2. According to a press release, the McDowell County Sheriff's Office warned people in the area to be careful of those who wish to do volunteer work, and verify that they are actual volunteers before letting them work on any property. They also advised people to ensure that the work is truly volunteer based and done at no cost, and anyone who is asked to pay for volunteer services are encouraged to call 911 and try and get documentation from the individuals. GHENT, WV (WVNS) — In light of the recent flooding experienced throughout southern West Virginia, community members are turning to their friends and neighbors for much-needed support. In February 2025, intense rain and flooding affected many parts of southern West Virginia. The influx of water damaged homes, schools, roads, and more, while people sought higher ground and shelter while waiting to evaluate the full impact of the storms. The flooding left a major impact on people and communities in the region, especially in areas such as McDowell County. WVNS 59News southern West Virginia Disaster Relief During times of disaster and uncertainty, locations in the affected areas often take a variety of donations to help communities in the aftermath of a disaster. Many items are needed after a disaster such as flooding, and some items that people and communities need can include: Large push brooms Electric and propane heaters Propane (any size) Drying agents such as DampRid and more Dehumidifiers Fans Bleach Lime Cleaning supplies Gloves Tarps Rags Brooms Mops Shovels Rakes Large squeegees with broom handles Laundry supplies Buckets Non-perishable food items Baby supplies (such as formula, bottles, baby food/snacks, and diapers) Dry and wet dog and cat food Handheld can openers Personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shower supplies, etc… Toiletries Trash bags Sanitizer Plastic totes Rolls of plastic Air purifiers Water Nothing better than a boring forecast as flood recovery continues across the region A post on the McDowell County Commission's Facebook page stated that donations are being gathered by the McDowell County Office of Emergency Services for the replacement of private bridges in McDowell County. WVNS 59News will collect donations at the news station, located at 141 Old Cline Road in the Ghent area of Raleigh County, from Monday, February 24, 2025 through Friday, February 28, 2025. Those who cannot go to a donation location in person can donate online on the 59News Southern West Virginia Disaster Relief page.
