Five-star Tyrone add another U20 title beating Louth

Tyrone were crowned All-Ireland U20 football champions for the third time in four years, as their devastating attacking power proved too much for Louth at the Box-It Athletic Grounds. Noah Grimes smashed in 2-06 in the Dalata Hotel Group All-Ireland championship decider, with senior panellist Eoin McElholm helping himself to 2-04 as the brave challenge of the Wee County was mercilessly crushed in Armagh City venue. Louth held the lead as they approached the break, but a second Grimes goal gave the Red Hands an advantage that they protected zealously. And with the wind blowing in their faces in the second half, they ran at the Leinster champions from all angles, stretching them to the limit and punishing with clinical finishing. Grimes and Joey Clarke shot Tyrone into an early lead, but Sean Callaghan's spectacular high fielding helped Louth dominate the opposition kick-out as they recovered from a shaky start to take the lead through Conor McCreesh after ten minutes. The Leinster champions had a goal chance when Shane Lennon was sent through by Callaghan, but Conan McGarvey kept out the shot. As the Ulster men built from deep, they came up against a solid Louth resistance, with Tadhg McDonnell stepping in with the perfect tackle on Conall Sheehy as he headed for goal, while Padraic Tinnelly forced a couple of turnovers. The Red Hands struck a 15th-minute goal through Grimes, and as McElholm chipped in with a point, they were on the rise. A magnificent two-pointer from Callaghan, a perfectly judged slice into the wind, had the Wee County back in front, but the holders finished the half strongly with 1-03, including a second goal from Grimes, to lead by 2-07 to 0-08 at the break. They pushed the lead out to seven before McDonnell sparked Louth's fightback with a two-pointer, with Shane Lennon and Adam Gillespie also on target, and the Red Hands were living on the edge as Joey Clarke cleared off the line from Lennon, and Darragh Dorian smashed a shot against the crossbar. And they were punished by a Tyrone side that recovered to strike for two goals in the space of five minutes, both netted by McElholm for an 11-point lead. The Red Hands got on top of a tiring Louth side in all areas, out-scoring them by 3-07 to 0-04 in the closing 20 minutes as they took control of the contest. Grimes squeezed over a a point from an almost impossible angle, and classy scores from McElholm, Caolan Donnelly and Ruairi McCullagh pushed the prize further beyond the Louth unit. James Maguire did send over a two-pointer, with sub Dylan Shevlin also on target in a brief recovery, but the defending champions sealed the title with a spectacular fifth goal from substitute Shea McDermott. Five-goal Tyrone stretch legs in second half to claim All-Ireland U20 title

All-Ireland U20 Championship final: Tyrone 5-16 Louth 0-17 Red hot forwards Noah Grimes and Eoin McElholm did the bulk of the scoring as holders Tyrone cruised to back-to-back Dalata Hotel Group All-Ireland U-20 Football Championship titles. Leading by two points with 20 minutes to go in a terrific back and forth at Armagh's Athletic Grounds, the holders suddenly hit the afterburners and left Louth with scorch marks. They outscored Louth by 3-7 to 0-4 in the final third of the game and while the 14-point margin may have flattered them slightly, there was no denying their quality. Grimes clinched the Man of the Match award with a thrilling 2-6 tally while McElholm, who struck 0-7 in last year's final win over Kerry, wasn't far behind with his 2-4 haul. There was an impressive late cameo too from substitute Shea McDermott who contributed 1-1, helping to seal the Red Hand County's eighth title at the grade. Louth will kick themselves for failing to score a single goal despite three decent chances over the hour while eight wides and a number of score attempts that dropped short proved costly for them. But they will have no complaints about the result as Tyrone, with seven different scorers and an excellent display from Matthew Quinn, locked down back-to-back titles for the third time in the county's history. Louth, Leinster champions for the first time since 1981, played into a stiff first-half wind but created chance after chance in the opening quarter and will rue their errant kicking in this period. In the first 10 minutes alone, Louth kicked three points but also dropped three more score attempts short and booted another one wide. Two minutes later, another point attempt that dropped short, this time from Adam Gillespie, fell kindly for Tony McDonnell to get a shot away that was saved. The giant fear among the big Louth crowd that made the journey up the M1 to the home of Armagh GAA was that they'd be made to pay for all the misses. And sure enough Tyrone snatched a goal against the run of play in the 15th minute. Grimes, with a point to his name already, this time cut in from the right beyond Micheal Reid and blasted left-footed to the net. It tied up the game at 1-2 to 0-5 though Louth kept their foot down and continued to benefit from an aggressive press. Midfielders James Maguire and Sean Callaghan were dominant for Louth in this period and a terrific Callaghan two-pointer in the 25th minute left them 0-8 to 1-4 up. Louth, who beat Mayo at the All-Ireland semi-final stage, weren't flattered by the lead but were also powerless to prevent the game suddenly swinging back in Tyrone's favour. Grimes, Ruairi McCullagh and Conor O'Neill added points before a Louth kick-out was intercepted by McElholm who fed Grimes for a second goal. It was a terrific finish as Grimes unable to bounce the ball a second time after a neat dummy bounce, dropped the ball and finished it soccer style to the net. Tyrone now led 2-7 to 0-8 at half-time and stretched the gap to seven with points from McElholm and Grimes after the restart. Louth got it back to a two-point game when they sandwiched a Tadhg McDonnell two-pointer with a series of singles. Just like the first-half, Louth had opportunities to pull decisively clear but failed to convert 39th and 41st minute goal chances. Shane Lennon had a flicked shot cleared off the line by Tyrone's Clarke and Darragh Dorian smashed the second of Louth's attempts off the bar. This time there was no coming back for Louth who were buried by an avalanche of Tyrone scores between the 40th and 46th minutes. McElholm burst through for two trademark goals, the first in the 43rd minute after Liam Óg Mossey's spadework and the second three minutes later after a Conall Sheehy lay-off. Grimes, McElholm and Caolan Donnelly added points in the 2-3 blitz to leave Tyrone 4-12 to 0-13 ahead, breaking the back of the Louth challenge. Grimes, who also netted against Kerry in the semi-final win, and McElholm continued to tap over the points in the closing minutes and sub McDermott added a late 1-1 to gloss the scoreline and secure a 14-point win. Scorers for Tyrone: N Grimes 2-6; E McElholm 2-4; S McDermott 1-1; R McCullagh 0-2 (1 free); J Clarke, C O'Neill, C Donnelly 0-1 each. Tyrone get better of Kerry in Under-20 semi-final

Tyrone remain on course for a third All-Ireland Under-20 Football title in four years, after getting the better of Kerry in a repat of last year's decider. They'll face either Mayo or Louth in the 2025 final, thanks to a performance built on defensive resilience at Laois Hire O'Moore Park that earned them a six points success. And up front, their twin strike force, Loughmacrory duo Eoin McElholm and Ruairi McCullagh, delivered again. In last year's final, the pair shared a 0-12 haul, and this time they accounted for 1-13 of the winners' total. Tyrone's attack threat was evident from the opening minute, when McElholm broke through to have a crack at goal. denied by Michael Tansley's brilliant save, with McCullagh converting the resultant '45. And the holders were 0-5 to 0-1 up by the end of the opening quarter, McCullagh adding another couple and McElholm curling over a free. Kerry's sole score in that period came from midfielder Daniel Kirby, their shot selection letting them down on several occasions. But they did create a goal chance when Kirby sent Evan Boyle through, but full back Ben Hughes got a hand in to block the shot. Direct long ball to full forward Tomas Kennedy began to pay dividends, and he won three frees which Paddy Lane converted. They were now winning the scrap for possession around the middle through Kirby, Eddie Healy and Darragh O'Sullivan, with Killian Dennehy sending over a couple of scores as they picked off five in a row to close the gap to a point. But the Ulster champions reasserted themselves, McCullagh converting a two-point free, before Conan Devlin sent Noah Grimes in to smash home their second goal on the half-hour. They led by 2-8 to 0-9 at the interval, and it was in the second half that the Tyrone defence stood tall in the face of waves of attack, with Ben Hughes, Joey Clarke, Callum Daly and substitute Sean Broderick stepping in with vital challenges. Nevertheless, the Munster champions, who had cruised through their provincial series, kept coming, with Kennedy always a threat up front and Kirby and Healy driving it from midfield. Substitute Ronan Carroll scored with his first touch, and a couple of Lane frees narrowed the gap. Ben Murphy broke through to fire in a shot that Red Hand 'keeper Conan McGarvey kept out, and when Kennedy scored from the rebound, just three points separated the sides going into the final seven minutes. But the champions were able to shut out the Kerry attack in those vital closing stages to turn defence to attack with impressive transition, hitting the last three points through McElholm and McCullagh (2).
