Man charged with gun, drugs possession in Drogheda
A 28-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with possessing a loaded semi-automatic pistol, ammunition, drugs and money laundering in Drogheda, Co Louth. Seán McGlone of Beechwood Drive, Drogheda was brought before Dundalk District Court this morning. He is charged with possessing a 9mm calibre semi-automatic pistol with a magazine of six live rounds as well as five further rounds of ammunition at his home address on Monday. He is also charged with having €4,200 worth of cocaine and €480 worth of cannabis for sale or supply. He is further charged with money laundering in excess of €200,000 via his Revolut account. Detective Garda Dean Hyland of Drogheda Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. The court heard the accused made no reply when any of the charges were put to him. Detective Garda Hyland told the court that Mr McGlone was arrested under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act in relation to allegedly enhancing a criminal organisation. The court was told members of the Divisional Drugs Unit in Drogheda executed a search warrant at a cabin located behind the accused's family home, where he was the sole occupant. Det Gda Hyland said that the drugs and other drug-related paraphernalia were found in the cabin while two mobile phones and €3,000 in cash were also discovered. The court was told that the loaded semi-automatic pistol, along with five further rounds of ammunition, were also found. Det Gda Hyland said that he was objecting to bail on a number of grounds, including the seriousness of the alleged offences and that further more serious charges are likely to be brought against Mr McGlone in the future. Defence solicitor Seán Allen said his client was entitled to the presumption of innocence and would comply with any bail conditions imposed by the court. However, Judge Gerard Jones said the accused was present when the firearm and drugs were discovered, and he was refusing bail. Mr McGlone was remanded in custody to appear before Drogheda District Court on Monday via video-link. There was no application made for legal aid.

Gold is sending markets a big warning signal
So far this year, gold is dramatically outshining other metals. It may be bad news for the economy. It is no secret that gold, traditionally a haven asset, has been on a tear, with prices up 40% in the past year, thanks to buying by central banks and a chaotic U.S. political scene. On Friday, gold traded at $3313 an ounce, down 0.9%, and about 3% below its April record. It has been a far different story for industrial metals such as copper, aluminum, and zinc. Their prices, driven by prospects for global economic growth, are down 10%, on average, in the past 12 months. That divergence in prices is ominous, according to a note Friday from Mike McGlone, a senior commodity strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence. 'The highest-ever gold price vs. the Bloomberg Industrial Metals Spot Subindex at the end of May, based on our database going back to 1991, isn't a good sign for the global economy," he wrote. There are some caveats, according to McGlone. U.S. stock prices remain high, and yields on Treasury bonds have been rising recently, not falling, as one would expect if nervous investors were dumping risky assets and buying the debt in a flight to safety. What is more, gold prices have been climbing steadily for several years, thanks to worries about inflation and buying by foreign central banks, which have been gradually diversifying their reserve assets away from the U.S. dollar. U.S. retail investors have been getting into the action too, snapping up gold bars at Costco, often as soon as they hit the shelves. By this reckoning, gold's price surge relative to more economically sensitive metals isn't necessarily a flashing red light for the economy. Instead, it merely suggests gold is in a bubble. That is certainly the view of plenty on Wall Street. Last month, a Bank of America Securities survey of global fund managers found 49% named gold the market's 'most crowded trade." The Magnificent Seven had held that honor for the previous two years. Still, writing off gold's price moves simply because the metal is making headlines and investors are piling in could be a mistake. After all, while gold prices are hovering near record highs, so is the S&P 500, with price-to-earnings ratios higher than at any time since the late 1990s. If U.S. stock prices were to tumble, perhaps in response to slowing U.S. economic growth or political turmoil, it could easily trigger a global selloff. That could see investors fleeing risky assets, including not just stocks, but Bitcoin and economically sensitive metals like copper. At least some of the money flooding out of these volatile assets would likely find shelter in gold, driving prices to new highs. 'Unprecedented U.S. tariffs are coming with the stock market historically elevated, which may test the inordinate burden on the S&P 500 to remain elevated to buoy all boats," he wrote. OAP convicted of sexually assaulting fellow pensioner in chapel
Man aged 80 who takes collections at Massvis convicted of assault on 75-year-old woman while she was sitting on church pew praying This is the pensioner convicted of sexually assaulting another pensioner in a chapel. Peter McGlone, previously a well-known figure in the Omagh area as a booking agent for bands, was convicted last week at Omagh Magistrates Court of one count of sexual assault. The 80-year-old had pleaded not guilty to the charge but he was convicted and given a conditional discharge. Following his court appearance the family of his victim, a 75-year-old local woman, say she'll never return to St Mary's Killyclogher church where the incident took place. She was left badly shaken by the experience when McGlone put his hands on her buttocks and kissed her as she was leaving her local chapel. The victim says she can't go back to St Mary's church in Killyclogher where she was assaulted McGlone had been a respected figure in the Cappagh Parish, taking collections during Mass at the chapel and collecting money at church events. McGlone, from Glennan Grove in the County Tyrone town, also lives in the same area as his victim, who has encountered him on several occasions since the chapel incident. The assault took place in June 2023 when the victim had gone into the parish church to pray. The elderly man and several other people were in the chapel and were leaving when she arrived. Sunday World reporter Roisin Gorman confronts McGlone at his home this week The woman sat in a church pew and noticed the kneeling cushion was up. As she moved to put it down, McGlone appeared from behind her and put his arm around her to put the kneeler down. 'He said to her 'I'll get that for you', and she sat for a few moments and prayed,' says a source close to the victim. 'As she got up to leave the chapel he appeared from nowhere and put his arms around her, his hand on her backside and kissed her. 'She didn't report it for a couple of days. She was in shock. 'She went to see McGlone and he told her he shouldn't have done that. 'After the court case last week she just wants it out there that this happened in a place where she should have felt safe.' The victim is still shaken by the incident, says the source. 'She doesn't want to go down to the shop because she's met him there since this happened,' he says. 'She's saying, 'are people looking at me and thinking I did something to encourage him?' She's told me 'you get to my age and never think something like this is going to happen to you'. 'I've told her to hold her head up high because she did nothing wrong, but even now she's still not in a great way.' The biggest impact is that she feels uncomfortable returning to her local chapel. McGlone has been told he can attend services but can no longer take part in any volunteer activity. Peter McGlone in his younger days 'It's bad enough for this to happen anywhere but on your own doorstep in your own church,' our source said. 'She's told me she'll not be back in that chapel, but she still has to go past it every day. 'We were brought up with good faith and it's very important to her. 'It's like everything in life, when you take something for granted and it's taken away from you, it's difficult.' Peter McGlone was a familiar face in Omagh for years, booking entertainment for Knock-Na-Moe Castle Hotel, an entertainment mecca in the Tyrone town which drew huge crowds to weekly discos and hosted musicians including Phil Lynott and Rory Gallagher in the 1980s. In court last week the pensioner pleaded not guilty to intentionally touching his victim, knowing that the touching was sexual, and that she did not consent. He was found guilty and given a conditional discharge for two years, which means he will be sentenced for the sexual assault if he commits another offence within that time period. When Sunday World approached him this week McGlone said he did not wish to say anything to his victim. Peter McGlone this week News in 90 Seconds - May 20th
