Receiver Terry McLaurin skips Commanders minicamp while looking for a new contract

(AP Photo/Derik Hamilton, File) ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Terry McLaurin is not at Washington Commanders mandatory minicamp as the team's top wide receiver looks for a new contract. McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, is only signed through the next NFL season. Advertisement 'Hey, sometimes football and business, they intersect and this is one of those times,' coach Dan Quinn said Tuesday. 'Terry is a fantastic teammate and really puts in the work, and we spent a lot of time with him already this offseason.' McLaurin has surpassed 1,000 yards receiving each of the past five seasons and fell only 81 short in his rookie year because he missed games because of an injury. A third-round pick in 2019 out of Ohio State who dealt with quarterback roulette for the quite some time after breaking into the league, McLaurin set career highs with 82 catches and 13 touchdowns with Jayden Daniels as the starter and Marcus Mariota the backup. Quinn downplayed McLaurin not being there, saying the good news is the wideout and QBs have already established strong rapport. He's leaving the negotiating part to general manager Adam Peters. 'The business side of things, Adam and their crew and Terry and his group, let them work through that,' Quinn said. 'But in the meantime, lots of stuff to do.' ___ AP NFL:

Terry McLaurin had been a full participant in the Washington Commanders voluntary offseason program, but that changed Wednesday when he was not present for the first time.
The Washington Commanders have made it clear they are in win-now mode, hoping to capitalize on the years of contention available through Jayden Daniels' rookie contract. They have been aggressive this offseason to lock in pieces that will keep them among the top teams in the NFC. A core that went to their first NFC Championship in decades has added Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil and some enticing rookies to the lineup. Advertisement Washington has done the job of adding the external talent to make their team stronger. Now, they must apply this aggression to the other stars in-house. The Commanders and star receiver Terry McLaurin had started preliminary talks on a contract extension in March, per general manager Adam Peters. There has not been much to update on that front, until a major change on Wednesday. McLaurin was reportedly not present at the team's offseason programs for the first time, per FOX Sports' Jordan Shultz. As of now, the exact reason of his absence is not known though the matter of his extension are likely in play here. Phase 3 of the Commanders program gets started next week, so the details of the decision will not remain in the dark for long. If pertaining to his extension, it appears McLaurin, who enters the final year of his contract in 2025, is finally taking his stance to get things moving on the timeline. Advertisement McLaurin has proven one of the league's most consistent receivers, continuing the strong output from the ugly years before Daniels' arrival. He has totaled over 1,000 yards in the last five seasons, including a 1,096-yard tally from 2024 that included 82 catches and 13 touchdowns. His number in terms of his average salary will likely fall in the mid-to-high 30s. Ja'Marr Chase has the most expensive non-quarterback contract in the league currently at $40 million per year. Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb follow behind at $35 and $34 million respectively. Given his production, that could be a close estimate for the Commanders' No. 1. McLaurin has kept his head down and worked through some dark years for the Commanders. He remains central to their plans of having an elite offense around Daniels for years to come, so a deal is most likely on its way in the future. Advertisement For now though, the uncertainty around that contract is beginning to swell. Washington Star Terry McLaurin Makes Major Announcement Ahead of Commanders Mini-Camp
Washington Star Terry McLaurin Makes Major Announcement Ahead of Commanders Mini-Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Going into the 2025 NFL season, the Washington Commanders are a popular pick to be one of the best teams in the conference, if not the entire NFL. Thanks to the play of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels a year ago, the Commanders made a surprising run to the NFC Championship game and became one of the most exciting young teams in the league. Advertisement However, there might be some trouble brewing in Washington D.C. On Tuesday, it was revealed that Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin would be holding out and not attending the Commanders' mandatory mini-camp over an ongoing contract dispute with the team. Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin (17).Bill Streicher-Imagn Images McLaurin has been away from the team throughout OTAs this spring as well as he continues to lobby for a new contract, and that absence will continue this summer at mini-camp until they can figure something out. McLaurin is in the final year of his three-year contract that was signed with Washington, and is set to earn $19.65 million in 2025. However, with the mini-camp holdout, the two-time Pro-Bowler will accrue fines of over $100k in order to send a message to the team that he is serious about getting paid. Advertisement If the two sides can not come to an agreement, there is the potential that a trade takes place. Teams around the league like the Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers have been floated as potential landing spots should that happen. In six years with Washington, McLaurin has 6,379 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was the top target for Daniels, who was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024, catching 82 passes for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns, a career year. If the Commanders are to make the deep run in 2025 and 2026 that many are projecting, McLaurin will likely need to be a big part of it. NFL minicamp holdouts: T.J. Watt, Terry McLaurin among those not practicing
The NFL's offseason practice schedule heats up and reaches its apex this week with mandatory minicamps being held throughout the league, giving teams a final opportunity to get acquainted before training camp begins. It also gives stars and standout players a chance to send a message to their respective teams on how they feel about their current contract. Several players around the league will hold out of their team's minicamp practices this week in hopes of expediting the process of getting a deal done. Unlike with organized team activities (OTAs), teams can fine players who skip out on minicamp practices. So, missing practice in June doesn't come without a penalty. Let's take a look at which players are holding out and who is reporting to practice as they seek a new contract. Pittsburgh Steelers edge T.J. Watt Watt will not be in attendance for Steelers minicamp this week, according to multiple reports. Watt could potentially be fined up to $104,768 for missing all three mandatory minicamp practices. The 30-year-old Watt has been seeking a new contract as he's entering the final season of a four-year, $112 million deal. The 2021 Defensive Player of the Year winner had 11 sacks in 2024. McLaurin will not be at Commanders mandatory minicamp this week as he seeks a new contract, according to multiple reports. He, too, could potentially be fined up to $104,768 for missing all three mandatory minicamp practices. The 29-year-old McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.3 million deal and reportedly wasn't present during OTAs. McLaurin was named an All-Pro for the first time in his career last season, after recording 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. It marked the fifth straight year McLaurin had at least 1,000 receiving yards. Hendrickson is continuing his lack of participation in the Bengals' offseason program into minicamp, according to multiple reports. Hendrickson has been outspoken about his desire to receive a new deal, as he's set to earn $16 million in cash in 2025 before his contract expires. He told reporters in May that he wouldn't play for the Bengals without a new contract in place. The 30-year-old Hendrickson had a career year in 2024, recording a league-high 17.5 sacks. He could potentially be fined up to $104,768 for missing all three mandatory minicamp practices. Cook will be in attendance for Bills minicamp this week, although it's unclear how much he'll participate, according to multiple reports. Cook skipped out on the team's voluntary portion of practices this offseason as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. The 25-year-old Cook was named a Pro Bowler for a second straight season in 2024. He rushed for 1,009 yards on 4.9 yards per carry and a league-leading 16 touchdowns. Cousins will be in attendance for Falcons minicamp this week, according to NFL Media. The veteran quarterback skipped out on voluntary practices this offseason as he looked to be moved elsewhere. However, the Falcons have said they planned to keep Cousins to back up first-year starter Michael Penix Jr. Cousins, who'll turn 37 in August, struggled in his first season in Atlanta. He threw for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns and a league-high 16 interceptions as the Falcons went 7-7 in the 14 games he started. In an unusual move, the Bengals' first-round pick won't be practicing at minicamp this week, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Stewart and the Bengals are reportedly in dispute over the language in the rookie contract, with Cincinnati looking to set a new precedent by allowing the team to void future guarantees. Stewart was taken by the Bengals with the 17th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Neither Smith nor Ramsey will be present when the Dolphins hold minicamp this week, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters. Smith, who is entering the final season of a two-year, $8.4 million deal, is seeking a new contract, while the Dolphins have been looking to trade Ramsey for much of the offseason. Smith, who'll turn 30 in August, had a career year in 2024. He recorded 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in his first year in Miami. Ramsey, meanwhile, started all 17 games for the Dolphins in 2024. However, the 30-year-old wasn't named a Pro Bowler for the first time since 2016, when he was a rookie. He had 60 total tackles and two interceptions last year. As he seeks an extension, Gardner will be in attendance for Jets minicamp this week, The Athletic reported. Gardner became extension-eligible for the first time this offseason. Gardner, who'll turn 25 in August, has been one of the league's top corners since the Jets drafted him in 2022. He was named first-team All-Pro in each of his first two seasons, but his play took a slight dip in 2024 as he recorded 49 total tackles and an interception. Former Washington quarterback Alex Smith discusses the Commanders' decision to move back to RFK Stadium. Sports Seriously Add another name to the list of mandatory minicamp holdouts. Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is not in attendance as his team kicks off its first day of minicamp on Tuesday. He is at risk of fines after failing to show up to the mandatory practice sessions. Last week, McLaurin stopped attending Washington's OTAs after initially reporting to the offseason workout program. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported at the time that the wideout was "frustrated with the lack of progress on a long-term deal." McLaurin, 29, is a six-year NFL veteran and has played all of his career in Washington. The two-time Pro Bowler is set to become a free agent for the first time after the 2024 season, barring another extension from the Commanders. TERRY MCLAURIN CONTRACT: Projecting Commanders WR's next deal as he holds out Schultz included in his report last week that "talks have been minimal" between McLaurin and the Commanders. Amidst a tenure in Washington that has been chaotic – three different head coaches, four general managers, two different owners and 11 different starting quarterbacks over the last six years – McLaurin has been a model of consistency. Through six years as a pro, the Ohio State product has put together five straight 1,000-yard seasons, an active streak that dates back to his second season in 2020. His most recent season – and first with quarterback Jayden Daniels – ended with 1,096 yards on 82 catches and a career-high 13 touchdowns, earning him his second career Pro Bowl nod as well as second-team All-Pro honors. The Commanders' mandatory minicamp is set to run for three days: June 10-12. McLaurin could face higher fines for each day of practice that he misses. Here are the maximum amounts a team can fine players for missing mandatory team events ahead of the 2025 season:
