Student Loan Debt: Tips for Managing and Finding Relief
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — Whether you're a recent graduate or someone who graduated years ago, student loan debt is a challenge that many people face. According to over 42.7 million student borrowers in the United States are currently carrying federal loan debt. To help borrowers navigate the financial complexities, McLennan Community College Director of Financial Aid Sandi Jones offered key advice on how to manage student debt. 'Learning about budgeting, managing debt, and understanding what all your debt is—along with your income—will help you figure out how you're going to pay back the money you owe,' Jones said. This knowledge will not only help you manage your loans, but will also enhance your overall financial well-being. For those who may encounter financial hardships, such as unexpected medical expenses or job loss, options exist to make loan repayment more manageable. According to Baylor University Assistant Vice President of Student Financial Services Taryn Anderson, there are several ways to handle federal loans if you fall into tough times. 'If they do hit a critical point where they don't have the income available monthly to make a payment, there are options. Some of them are short term like forbearance. It may just be for a couple of months based on a, maybe, a change in income or an unusual medical expense,' she explains. Anderson also emphasized that longer-term solutions like deferment are available for individuals facing major life events, such as significant medical issues or economic hardship. Deferment allows borrowers to temporarily postpone payments, providing some financial relief. Both Jones and Anderson urge borrowers to stay informed about their options. Whether you're learning to budget effectively or exploring relief options when hard times hit, understanding the resources available to you is crucial in managing student loan debt. As student loan debt continues to affect millions, these financial experts emphasize the importance of financial literacy, planning, and knowing your options to ensure a healthier financial future. Shawn Trochim breaking barriers as MCC Athletic Director
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — Shawn Trochim became the first Black athletic director at McLennan Community College when she took over the role in 2004. In the past two decades, she has helped lead MCC as one of the most successful junior college athletic programs in the state. Trochim's path to athletic director started in Waco, where she thrived as a star basketball player at Waco High. She continued her career as a player at MCC before capping off her time as a collegiate athlete at Texas A&M. After graduating, Trochim returned to MCC as a volunteer assistant for women's basketball for one season before being brought onto the staff full-time. Trochim felt extra pressure after being named the first Black athletic director, but she knew that she was more than capable of excelling in the role. 'It was important to make sure I was crossing T's and dotting I's,' Trochim said. 'It's about having pride, coming to work every day and loving what you do.' In the 21 years that Trochim has been leading the Highlanders, teams have combined for 24 national championships and has boasted 120 All-Americans. 'I always knew that I knew athletics, and I knew MCC, so when you put those two things together you can find some success.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. MCC Students Claim First Place at Cybersecurity Competition
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — A team of students from McLennan Community College (MCC) has emerged victorious in the Cybersecurity Interdisciplinary Incident Response Competition (CIIRC), after challenging teams to design real-world simulations centered around cyber crisis scenarios. The intense, three-day event saw MCC's team go head-to-head with competitors from top universities, including Baylor University and Texas A&M. Students were tasked with responding to a simulated cyberattack from multiple perspectives, including technical, legal, business, and public relations. Teams were required to analyze security breaches, develop recovery strategies, assess financial and reputational risks, manage press conferences, and report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) according to regulatory standards. Team coach Joshua Sullwold credited the team's success to effective communication, 'Having an area where they can express their interest and supporting that interest as best you can was key.' For Christopher Morris, associate professor of Communication Information Systems at MCC, this victory holds significant importance, 'It lets people know that community colleges are colleges that they can compete with, alongside the major schools in the area. There's often a stigma around community colleges, but competing at a high level and achieving success like this helps to break that stereotype and put us on the map.' Morris also noted the pride this accomplishment instills in students, reinforcing the value of their hard work and dedication. The success is expected to inspire continued growth in the college's business and technology programs. As the academic year progresses, professors in the business and technology departments are committed to motivating students and further developing MCC's cybersecurity program to continue building on this success.
