GTU forms panel to probe errors in diploma semester-2 exam

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) formed a five-member committee to probe substantial errors in the diploma semester-2 mechanical engineering examination. The problems occurred in the Applied Mathematics exam conducted on May 29, creating confusion among nearly 25,000 students from more than 120 colleges across the state. During the examination, which ran from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm, corrections were issued around 1.10 pm. Many students completed and submitted their papers before the corrections were announced. Despite a 30-minute extension being granted, numerous institutions failed to receive the information in time. This situation resulted in student demonstrations and appeals for grace marks. The university formed a committee including the Dean of Diploma Faculty, two Board of Studies members, and two subject specialists. During their Thursday meeting, the committee's assessment revealed errors in multiple questions, specifically two questions worth 3 marks each and three questions worth 4 marks each. The punishment includes withholding three years' worth of exam remuneration and a two-year ban from examination responsibilities. The committee advised the university to report the incident to the education commissioner's office. This is not the first instance of examination-related chaos this year. GTU earlier faced criticism during the Mechanical Drafting paper due to late corrections. The university is now under pressure to ensure transparency and prevent such lapses in future examinations.
