Landowners in 5 Big Country Counties eligible for wildfire mitigation grant
COLLEGE STATION, Texas () – Landowners in 5 Big Country counties are eligible for part of a wildfire mitigation grant through the Texas A&M Forest Service.
The Forest Service awarded $155,000 to the landowners via the Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant, which is a cost-share reimbursement grant designed to help fund practices like hand cutting and mulching to prevent wildfire damage to homes and other structures.
'The Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant helps landowners take proactive measures that will help protect their homes, land and community,' said Victoria Wenkman, Texas A&M Forest Service Community Resilience Program Specialist. 'Private landowners and local fire departments are the first lines of defense to wildfire. Creating fuel breaks and defensible spaces on their own properties can help reduce the risk and severity of wildfires.'
Landowners in Coke, Runnels, Coleman, Brown and Mills are all eligible to receive funds from the grant, as well as landowners in several other counties across central Texas.
Anyone interested in the Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant has from August 1 through September 12 to apply.
