We have to protect rivers, says Medha

Berhampur: The State government's proposal to construct a dam at Pipalapanka in Sorada block of Ganjam district on the banks of Rushikulya river faced resistance from environmentalists and civil society leaders. Environmental activist Medha Patkar lent her support to Rushikulya Banchao Kriyanusthan Committee and Centre for Climate Justice during a public gathering at Potalampur near Chhatrapur. 'When rivers die, civilisations crumble,' she said, urging women and grassroots workers to stand as sentinels of nature. 'Let no river be chained without the people's consent,' she said, pressing for stronger laws to safeguard natural resources. 'Rivers may be small or big, but they are our mother. We have to protect the rivers from attacks,' Medha said. The proposed Pipalapanka reservoir, estimated to cost Rs 1,035 crore, is yet to obtain forest clearance. Opponents allege that the project is tailored to benefit corporate behemoths at the cost of community and ecology. 'No corporate agenda can override people's rights over nature,' asserted Abani Gaya and Gagan Chandra Mallick during a joint rally organised by All India Kheta Mazdoor Kisan Sabha and Manab Adhikar Surakhya Manch in Berhampur. A memorandum opposing the dam was submitted to the Chief Minister through the RDC of the Southern Division. On the other hand, senior BJP leaders, including former deputy speaker Ram Chandra Panda and BJP panel spokesperson T Gopi, favoured the construction of the dam. They hailed it as a transformative step to harness Rushikulya's monsoon bounty and argued that such development is essential to irrigate over 3,000 hectares and quench the thirst of Berhampur, Aska, Purushottampur and adjoining towns. 'Opposition to this project is anti-people and anti-progress,' they stated, recalling the colonial and post-independence legacy of water projects like Sorada, Janibili and Baghua that shaped the agrarian prosperity of the region. But amid the debate, one truth resonates—the Rushikulya river, born in the misty heights of Daringbadi and flowing into the Bay of Bengal at Puruna Bandha, is gasping for breath. With five dry months a year, vanishing forest cover and erratic rains, the river now finds itself at the crossroads of policy, politics and preservation. As the battle between development and dissent intensifies, the voice of Rushikulya rises—not in words, but in whispers through her parched beds and fractured flow, awaiting a future where justice and sustainability may finally find a confluence.

Online slot booking is now available at all sub-registrar offices across Telangana

The State government has rolled out an online slot booking system for registering property documents at all the 144 sub-registrar offices in the State on Monday (June 2). This follows the success of a pilot project in 47 offices in two phases since April 10. The new system aims to save time for property buyers and sellers and provide better services in a transparent and corruption-free manner. According to Minister for Revenue (Registrations & Stamps) Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, the system has yielded positive results, with 94% of people expressing satisfaction. As part of the initiative, an AI-powered chatbot named Medha has been made available to help people find registration office locations and check slot availability. The chatbot can be accessed through WhatsApp number 82476 23578. Over 45,000 documents have been registered through the slot booking system during the pilot phase. To further improve the registration process, a developer registration module will be introduced to prevent double registration and check illegalities, the Minister said. Additionally, Aadhaar-e-signature is being introduced on a trial basis in two sub-registrar offices — Armoor in Nizamabad district and Kusumanchi in Khammam district — and it will soon be implemented State-wide. The slot booking system allows bookings from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding lunch time) , with five walk-in registrations allowed from 5 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. in case of emergencies.

The ultimate goal of Congress government is to provide satisfactory services to the people, he affirmed. He said that information on all aspects like registration charges on gift deed, sale deed, market prices, etc. can be obtained through this AI chatbot called Medha. To check illegalities, the developer registration module will be introduced soon so that the details of completed and incomplete registrations are available at the registration office and with the builder or developer, so that double registrations are not done in layouts. In this module, the details of the registered plots will be displayed in red color. In view of the slot booking system, additional sub-registrars and staff have been appointed in nine places including Patancheru, Yadagiri Gutta, Gandipet, Ibrahimpatnam, Suryapet, Jadcharla, Mahabubnagar, Vanaparthi and Gadwal, where the workload is high. Ponguleti said that slots can be booked from 10.30 am to 5 pm, excluding lunch time, and 48 slots will be booked in each office per day. He said that for those who have not booked their slots, permission has been given for five walk-in registrations from 5 pm to 5.30 pm in case of any emergency. He advised that prior precautions should be taken to avoid any technical problems in the context of introducing slot booking across the state. It was revealed that Aadhaar e-signature is being introduced as part of further speeding up the registration process along with slot booking. It is being implemented on a trial basis in the Sub-Registrar offices of Armoor in Nizamabad district and Kusumanchi in Khammam district, and will soon be implemented across the state.
