Conrad govt approves 273-acre land lease for tourism
Shillong: Meghalaya cabinet on Friday approved a proposal to lease 273.41 acres of unutilised land from Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to the tourism department for 60 years to facilitate several tourism projects.
"Cabinet approved the repurposing of MeECL land for tourism development. The land will be leased to the Tourism Department on a revenue-sharing basis to promote tourism projects," chief minister Conrad K Sangma said.
"Key locations include the IB campus, land from Le-junction to Nongsdier village, areas behind the MeECL school and NHRDC, Block V, and Lumpongdeng Island. This move aims to monetize idle land and boost tourism infrastructure in the state," the CM said.
Expressing his satisfaction with the cabinet decision, tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh stated that the tourism department would pay Re 1 per acre, while the power department would receive 90% of the lease amount for the initial 60-year lease period, which could be extended by 30 years.
To enhance tourism facilities, five-star hotels will be established, and lake cruise services will be introduced within the next year, Lyngdoh added.
