Tennyson Center for Children celebrates life-changing work for Colorado families at annual Spring Luncheon

On Wednesday morning, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts' Seawell Ballroom was packed with people celebrating the Tennyson Center for Children. The nonprofit has been providing paths to healing from trauma for more than 120 years, and its Paths to Healing Spring Luncheon honors those efforts. The event is emceed annually by CBS News Colorado Anchor Mekialaya White. CBS The luncheon also garners support and funds for Tennyson, which offers prevention and early intervention for children and families who've experienced trauma. Tennyson's goal is to keep children and families safely together. It also offers a day treatment school, community-based programs, and residential services. CBS "We are in an uncertain time," said CEO Mindy Watrous. "Today, we are grappling with how to bolster our agencies and the people who do the work of helping children and youth thrive as we face the prospect of damaging and deep budget cuts. As Congress debates the federal budget, essential programs like Medicaid are on the chopping block. If those cuts go through, access to care will be stripped from 1.3 million Coloradans. That includes low-income families, people with disabilities, and nearly 40% of Colorado's children." CBS Watrous continued, "Make no mistake, children's mental health is in crisis. Rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma-related symptoms in kids have surged over the last decade. The children we serve at Tennyson are arriving with more complex needs and more severe symptoms than ever before. They've experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment, and instability. And if we want to break the cycle, we have to treat their mental health with the same urgency as their physical health. At Tennyson, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to heal. To feel safe. To know their worth. And to imagine a future filled with possibility." To learn more about the work being done by Tennyson Center staff or help with their efforts, visit their website.

CBS Colorado and Girl Scouts of Colorado hold first-ever "Young Reporters Workshop" hosted by First at 4 anchor Mekialaya White

CBS Colorado is partnering with Girl Scouts of Colorado for a new initiative to empower girls to pursue journalism careers. Over the weekend, about 30 girls participated in the first-of-its-kind CBS Colorado Young Reporters Workshop. The girls learned how to tackle stage fright and face the camera with confidence from CBS Colorado First at 4 Anchor Mekialaya White, a former Girl Scout herself. As part of the day, girls learned how to give news reports in front of and behind the camera, record their own podcasts, and present topics in a board room. Once they had completed the course, they all earned a special CBS Colorado media patch. Katy Herstein, program and events manager at the Girl Scouts of Colorado, said the program saw "girls coming in and being able to say, 'this is how I am with my friends' and being able to showcase that here and practice it and seeing other girls who might be a little more confident in their skills and saying, 'if she can do it, I can do it too.'" Future workshops are in the works. To learn more about how to earn the patch in the future, check out the Girl Scouts of Colorado calendar .

Junior League of Denver fundraiser to be a Moonlight Masquerade

The Journey is the Junior League of Denver's signature fundraising event. It's a semi-formal evening which includes cocktails, dinner, a program that celebrates the organization's accomplishments over the year, a live auction, a silent auction, music, and dancing. This year CBS News Colorado's First at Four anchor Mekialaya White will emcee the event. "Folks can get dressed up and bring their favorite mask and just expect a really great night," said Carson Maczuzak, President of the Junior League of Denver. The Junior League of Denver was organized in 1918 as a way to train women to be community leaders. That important work continues 107-years later with a specific mission of disrupting the cycle of systemic poverty that limits women and families in Denver. "The Journey is one of our biggest fundraisers for our organization, and the money raised goes to support our mission," Maczuzak explained. "All the money raised does go to the training of our members and the work that we're able to do in the community." The Journey Moonlight Masquerade is at the Mile High Station. The event is capped at 350 seats. General admission tickets are $205 or you can go for the VIP experience. "The VIP experience is a ton of fun. You get an early cocktail reception with a signature cocktail. We'll also have an aura reader, so if anyone is interested in that that will be a lot of fun to start the night off," Maczuzak said. The Junior League of Denver's The Journey Moonlight Masquerade is Friday, March 7, 2025 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
