Raging Rangers fans fume ‘you should've just kept this quiet' as club holds huge event a day after latest disappointment

So it came as a surprise to many Light Blues fans to see many of their players being CELEBRATED last night. Once again, it proved costly with St Mirren twice hitting back in Paisley to secure a 2-2 draw against Barry Ferguson's side. It was a fifth game without a win in all competitions with the Gers not tasting victory for an entire MONTH. It's been a turbulent campaign for the Light Blues who sacked yet another manager, Philippe Clement, with club legend Ferguson seeing out the season. But ultimately, the ex-Gers skipper has failed to ignite a real spark with his side now trailing freshly crowned champions Celtic by 17 points in the Premiership table. Ferguson had challenged his players to finish the campaign with five wins from five - hopes of that have already gone up in smoke just one game in. With the US takeover of the club on the horizon, there are reasons for hope among the fed up Rangers support. But there are still four games to go this season as the current crop of players limp to the league's finish line. Given how the campaign has gone, it was perhaps little surprise that the club's annual player of the year awards event was given next to no fanfare. In fact, many fans seemed to be taken by surprise when the realised it was actually happening! Ian Murray on the day his Hibs team settled for defeat to Rangers The Rangers Player Awards took place in Glasgow last night and many disgruntled supporters weren't at all happy to see players being rewarded for what they see as a campaign of failure. Nicolas Raskin took home the Men's Player of the Year Award with Hamza Igamane taking the Young Player of the Year Award honours. Captain James Tavernier was also honoured after breaking through the 500-appearance mark. The awards for the Rangers Women team were also handed out, and unlike their male counterparts, they are still very much in the mix to win the SWPL title. Goal machine striker Katie Wilkinson took the top honour there. But as far as the men's awards go, plenty of Gers fans felt the entire awards ceremony should have been SCRAPPED altogether. And they weren't shy in taking to social media to make their feelings clear. One Rangers fan said: "Purely an embarrassment (bar youth and women's) that this has been held tonight." A second commented: "In what world did the think 'aye, this will be sound?' Another posted: "Embarrassing beyond belief and you expect me to fork out for a season ticket for next season." 4 A further comment read: "We should be the ones being rewarded for paying to watch them." Another Gers fan said: "Give the awards to the fans." While another said: "Let's keep these in-house lads." Similarly, another commented: "You should have kept all this in house. Embarrassing." Another said: "Should have just kept quiet." While another posted: "Should have cancelled this. An embarrassment to the club." A further Gers fan said: "Shouldn't have bothered." Another commented: "Dreadful optics." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
