USA Beats Switzerland 1-0 in OT for Gold in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden- Team USA needed overtime to do it but the Red White and Blue won its first goal medal since 1934, beating a more than worthy Team Switzerland 1-0 on a goal from Buffalo Sabre Tage Tompson. For the second year in a row, Kevin Fiala and his Swiss compatriots will have to settle for silver after another excellent run at the men's Worlds. TAGE THOMPSON HAS THE GOLDEN GOAL!! 🥇For the first time in 92 YEARS USA wins the #MensWorlds 🇺🇸 — Spittin' Chiclets (@spittinchiclets) May 25, 2025 Team USA and Switzerland kicked off the gold medal game in Stockholm with an exciting first frame of hockey, featuring lots of hits and back and forth action. Goaltenders Jeremy Swayman (USA) and Leonordo Genoni were both called upon to make big saves and both answered the bell. They also both lived up to the old adage that your goalie is your best penalty killer, especially Genoni who made some key saves on the US power play in the winding seconds of the first period. The US was clearly looking to impose their physicality on the Swiss early, but Switzerland matched the Americans hit for hit. Given that it's been 92 years since the USA won a gold medal in this tournament and that the Swiss have lost all seven of their previous gold medal games, physicality, and board battles were certainly to be expected. With just over five minutes expired in the second period, the USA were awarded a penalty shot after Michael Fora was called for hooking. After a few moments of gamemenship surrounding who would take the shot, Connor Garland skated out to center. Garland tried to wait Genoni out, but the Swiss netminder read the play perfectly to keep things scoreless. Conor Garland had a big chance to put USA up 1-0 in the gold medal match on a penalty shot but he was denied by Switzerland goalie Leonardo Genoni. — Remy Mastey (@MasteyRemy) May 25, 2025 As the second period wore on, the USA would start to string together the better of the chances, forcing Genoni to make some tough saves in tight with lots of traffic in front of the Swiss net. Although the Americans picked up the pace in the second, both teams would head off to the dressing rooms scoreless after forty minutes of play. After the break, the tension kept building, and it started to look like the first goal might be the only goal. Every chance, however, continued to be turned away by Swayman and Genoni. With six minutes remaining in the third period, the Americans had a chance to take the lead on the power play but Genoni and the Swiss came up with a huge kill to keep things squared at zero. And things would stay knotted up through sixty, although the USA would finish with 39 shots on goals to Swizterland's 24 at the end of regulation. The overtime period used the familiar 3-on-3 NHL format but extended beyond the allotted five minutes in the NHL, allowing for a full twenty minutes of overtime before going to a shootout. Tage Thompson and Team USA would barely need two minutes to end things though, putting an end to close to a century-long gold medal drought and sending the Swiss toan 0-8 record in gold medal finals at the IIHF World Championships.

Lightning's J.J. Moser, Switzerland fall short in 1-0 overtime loss to USA in gold medal game

USA hockey claimed its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship since 1933 with a 1-0 overtime victory over Switzerland. Tage Thompson, a current forward for the Buffalo Sabres and former first-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in 2016, scored the only goal of the game in overtime. He fired a wrist shot past Swiss goalie Leonardo Genoni's blocker to seal the win for Team USA. Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei picked up assists on the play. The final standings of the 2025 #MensWorlds! 🥇🥈🥉 #IIHF @usahockey @SwissIceHockey @trekronorse — IIHF (@IIHFHockey) May 25, 2025 Lightning defenseman J.J. Moser was a steady presence for Switzerland throughout the tournament, playing in all nine games. He finished with one goal, five assists, and a plus-8 rating, helping lead the team to another strong showing. Switzerland has won silver three times in 2013, 2018, and most recently in 2024 but has never won gold. 'We have a good consistency now over the past couple of years of the same guys coming in,' Moser said ahead of their championship matchup. 'We have a chemistry in the team and also take our experiences from the past years, and that kind of gets us more confidence and more calmness in those situations.' The score was the first ever 1-0 overtime game for the gold medal.

Blues First Round Pick Helps USA End Drought At World Champioship

It wasn't that long ago that Tage Thompson was part of the long term plans for the St. Louis Blues. But on Sunday, the No. 26 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Blues helped end a lengthy drought for the United States at the 2025 IIHF World Championship. Thompson scored the overtime goal, the lone goal of the game, a golden goal in the gold medal game to give Team USA its first gold medal in 92 years with a 1-0 win against Switzerland on Sunday at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. It was the first gold medal for Team USA since 1933, and it's a full 20-minute period and teams play the NHL's style of 3-on-3 until a winner is determined. Thompson skated through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone before wiring a wrist shot from the top of the right circle past Switzerland goalie Leonardo Genoni at 2:02 for the winner: This moment will go down in history 🇺🇸 #MensWorlds — USA Hockey (@usahockey) May 25, 2025 Blues fans will remember Thompson was a key piece to the trade in 2018 that brought Ryan O'Reilly to the Blues from the Buffalo Sabres along with Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, a 2019 first-round pick and a 2021 second-round pick. Of course, the Blues will call the trade a win since they went on to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history that very next season, defeating the Boston Bruins in seven games in 2019. Thompson, 27, has gone on to have a very nice career with the Sabres, reaching more than 40 goals twice in the past four seasons, including 44 this past season and a career-high 47 in 2022-23. Thompson spent one season with the Blues in 2017-18, playing in 41 games (three goals, six assists). Chesterfield native Clayton Keller, captain of the Utah Mammoth, who grew up in Swansea, Il. was also part of Team USA.

Fellow forwards Cooley, who plays with the Utah Mammoth, and Frank Nazar, who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks, were also saluted along with Garland for their play in the tournament so far after the win over the Swedes. The victory ended a 12-game losing streak in the semifinals for the Americans and has the U.S. playing in its first gold-medal game in the event since 1934. 'We played well as a team. We had some guys play awesome. We're just excited about the opportunity we've got,' Garland told reporters afterwards. 'We're locked in, we're playing our game.' Conor Garland is ready to stick to @usahockey 's game plan and take down the home team. 💪 #MensWorlds #IIHF Garland is from Scituate, Mass., and this is his third worlds with the Americans. In 2021 in Latvia, he led the Americans in goals (six) and points (13) in 10 games and helped them to a bronze medal. Garland, 29, had 19 goals and 50 points in 81 regular season games this past season for Vancouver. It was his fourth year with the team. He's an unrestricted after next season, finishing off a deal this coming campaign that has him at a cap hit of $4.95 million. @SteveEwen SEwen@
