Local police warn of credit card skimmer found at gas station
*Attached video: Privacy theft tips MENTOR, Ohio (WJW) – A Northeast Ohio police department is warning the community to watch out for credit card-skimming devices after one was found at a gas station in Mentor. According to a post on the Mentor Police Department's Facebook page, a credit card skimmer was found at the BP gas station located at 5711 Heisley Road. Wayne Dawson shares lesson, update in cancer fight According to police, the device has been collected, but it is unknown if anyone's credit card information was compromised. Police are also working to investigate who placed the device at the gas station. According to police, a credit card skimmer captures data using the card's magnetic stripe when the card is used. That data is then downloaded and used illegally. 'A credit card skimming device is a small, illegal device that attaches to a card reader, such as those found at gas pumps, grocery stores, ATM machines, and other places you use your credit or debit card,' the Facebook post said. 'These devices are often difficult to detect.' Police ask that anyone who uses an ATM or gas pump check for 'alignment issues' between the card reader and the panel underneath because skimmers are usually placed on top of an actual card reader. Tesla Cybertrucks recalled for panel that can detach 'Compare the card reader to others at a neighboring ATM or gas pump and look out for any differences,' the post said. Police ask that anyone who finds a credit card skimmer contact the Mentor Police Department or your local police department. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
