Pope Leo waves during first popemobile ride for inauguration in Vatican

The new pontiff, Leo XIV, rode the signature popemobile through the huge crowd in the heart of Vatican City today. Pope Leo, the first American pontiff, will formally take up his role as the head of the Catholic Church following his election after the death of Pope Francis. The pontiff was seen standing and waving at well-wishers at the back fo the popemobile – a one-of-a-kind version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon specially made for the pope. Security measures in the Vatican are strict as around 250,000 people are expected for the inauguration mass. Guests include the US Vice President JD Vance, Ukraine's leader Volodomyr Zelensky and Prince Edward. During the funeral procession of Pope Francis last month, a secret military unit with drone capabilities was deployed to keep an eye on the sky above the Holy See. For Pope Leo's inauguration, the area is monitored by a bomb squad and snipers on rooftops as well as an army of volunteers. He was elected into the role by the secretive conclave on May 8. He was born in Chicago as Robert Prevost, and he was named a cardinal by Francis in 2023. More Trending The 69-year-old pontiff has two brothers, John and Louis Prevost, who said they have teased him about becoming the pope one day. John Prevost told Sky News: 'I said to him 'did you watch the movie Conclave so you know how to behave?' 'And he had just finished watching Conclave – so he knew how to behave. Mercedes-Benz G580 electric: the iconic G-Wagon goes green while maintaining its legendary capability
The legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has gone fully electric with the G580. Name any vehicle that was built almost 50 years ago, is still in production and is instantly recognisable by virtually the entire world. There aren't many, right? Unless, of course, it's the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon or, more correctly, the Geländewagen. First introduced in 1979 as a military vehicle and later that year as a civilian option, the G-Wagon has stayed true to its box-like shape and incredible offroad ability whether it's a modern diesel G450d or the fire-breathing AMG G63 that's much loved by rappers, gangsters, soccer players and the rich and famous social types. Who knew, though, that an electric G580 would be as good, possibly better, than anything that has preceded it? I suppose it was inevitable given the way mobility is moving, but as an offroad enthusiast, when it was first announced, I had a good laugh. But after experiencing it first hand at the AMG Driving Experience Centre at Zwartkops, I must tilt my cap to what the engineers have managed to conjure up. Same exterior but a different powertrain We don't have to go into the exterior details simply because it's a G-Wagon, and not much has changed over the years. Interestingly, it hasn't changed its ladder chassis and body-on-frame design either, the German manufacturer preferring instead to stick to the fundamentals of what the G-Class is about. The chassis houses a 116kWh lithium-ion battery pack that's waterproof and protected from the elements by a torsion-resistant casing and underbody protection, including carbon-fibre reinforced materials, that they say can carry up to three times the weight of the car, should you get hung up on a rock and gives you a wading depth of 850mm.

Kanye West has shockingly revealed that he wishes he had children with Paris Hilton instead of ex-wife Kim Kardashian and social media users have blasted him and branded him 'disgusting' for the comments. The 47-year-old rapper - who r ecently went a month-long retreat that saved his marriage to Bianca Censori - made the wild claims in a rant on a livestream for a new Twitch channel which has since been banned. He appeared on the stream and was speaking to someone on the phone when his shocking rant began. Kanye had referenced how his ex Kim, 44, had got her start in the limelight by acting as Paris' assistant. He said: 'Kim was Paris Hilton's assistant. I should've had babies with Paris Hilton over Kim Kardashian!' Kanye and Kim share four children together: North, 11, Saint, nine, Chicago, seven, and Psalm, five. Meanwhile, Paris has two children with husband Carter Reum whom she married in 2021. 'Could you imagine if I had kids with Paris Hilton? How many hotels I would have right now? Think about that. 'After his song about Bianca she feels the best course of action is if she teams up with Bianca. 'Nothing else has worked and if Kanye has to be in her life because of the kids, then she has to figure out how to make that work, and a companionship with Bianca might be a good start.' 'I didn't want to have children with this person after the first two months of being with her, but that wasn't God's plan.' 'I don't got the name and likeness ownership, or at least 50-50 with my kids,' he said at one point, referring to the 'nuclear' war between them over their two sons and two daughters. 'So how's it joint custody?' 'My kids are celebrities and I don't have the say so,' he said. 'So this white woman and this white family have the control of these highly influential black kids that are half the children of Ye.' Recently, the Chicago native took aim at Kim in a series of tweets, in which he said that he was put off by a white woman being in control of his black children. Kim and Kanye were previously married for six years from 2014 to 2021. Last month he threatened to 'go to war' with her after releasing a song by Diddy which features North's voice. Diddy is currently in jail awaiting trial on charges including sex trafficking - he has pleaded not guilty to all the charges - and after the song was uploaded, a source shared that Kim sought legal action to prevent its release and have it taken down from X. Kanye then hit out at the Kardashians as he compared getting visitation rights to see his four children to being 'in jail.' He also claimed that his 'rights have been taken away' by the Kardashian mob, Hulu and Disney, and branded any stars with opinions on him as 'slaves to the Jews.' It came days before he dropped a new song about his wife Bianca, who he wed in December 2022. He appeared to hint that he and Bianca split and that she 'tried to get him committed.' Lyrics also suggest he had panic attacks after she walked out over his slew of shocking anti-Semitic posts on X.

All eyes are on the Vatican City after the death of Pope Francis just weeks after he left the Rome hospital to continue his recovery from pneumonia at home. He greeted crowds of well-wishers on St Peter's Square yesterday from the comfort of the Popemobile – a custom-made version of the luxury Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon loved by celebrities. Follow the latest reactions to the news of the Pope's death here The new, electric Popemobile was revealed in December last year in time for the 2025 Jubilee year, which Pope Francis was meant to celebrate with the 1.41 billion Catholics. But, what is the Popemobile and what will happen to it now? The fate of the new Popemobile has not been revealed yet. But, it is likely the keys will be handed to his successor after the conclave makes its selection. A well-maintained G-Wagon can have a lifespan of 30 years or more, and it can reach 200,000 miles, according to Mercedes-Benz. The battery life of an electric G 580 is around 10 to 20 years or 120,000 to 150,000 miles, Mercedes said, so the current Popemobile has many miles left. The latest Popemobile is estimated to cost around £380,000 ($500,000), according to Business Insider. The Vatican's number one choice of car has been Mercedes-Benz, which has designed the special papal vehicle for the past 94 years. The current Popemobile was unveiled in December – the first electric holy wagon aligning with Pope Francis's eco-conscious mindset. Unlike the normal G-Wagons, usually selling for more than £185,000, the pearl white Popemobile G 580 has been modified. It boasts the pontiff's special, swivelling chair in the middle with two seats behind him for the bodyguards, a red carpet and the Vatican flags at the front. The drivetrain of the G-Wagon has been adapted to allow particularly low speeds during public appearances like during the pope's final drive through the crowd yesterday. Mercedes-Benz created a custom-made car for Pope Pius XI in 1930, a Nürburg 460 Pullman Saloon, considered the first official Popemobile. More Trending The 1930s and 1940s are an awkward time for both the papalcy and the Mercedes-Benz due to the links to Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime. Previous popes have used other brands as well, such as Ford and Seat, and Francis has been seen travelling in a minibus, a small Ford Focus, a Renault and a Kia Soul during a visit to South Korea. Pope Francis was also a fan of public transport, it is understood. The Popemobile was kitted with bulletproof glass after the assassination attempt on John Paul II in 1981. Texas man sues Titans' L'Jarius Sneed over December car lot shooting
A Texas man who says Titans cornerback L'Jarius Sneed or his personal assistant shot at him while he was sitting inside a Mercedes-Benz on a dealer lot in December is suing the two-time Super Bowl champ for at least $1 million. Christian Nshimiyimana was sitting inside the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon on Dec. 6 in Carrollton. Neither he nor anyone else was hit by bullets fired from a Lamborghini Urus driving past One Legacy Motors. Much of what happened is redacted in the police report obtained by The Associated Press. Attorney Levi McCathern said in a statement Friday that Sneed and his accomplice were arrested by the Carrollton Police Department for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after the shooting but have yet to answer for it. McCathern also accused Sneed and a woman who identified herself as Sneed's mother of calling and threatening Nshimiyimana afterward, wanting him to not cooperate with police or retain an attorney. "The proof is there," McCathern said. "There is video surveillance from the dealership showing the car and the person who opened fire on Christian. We want to know why this happened. We're thankful no one was shot, but we continue to search for the reason behind this incident." Agents for Sneed did not immediately responded to the AP's emails and messages Friday afternoon. A Titans spokesperson said the team is "aware of the matter and have been in contact with NFL Security per league protocol." Nshimiyimana filed a civil lawsuit Feb. 20 in Dallas County, suing Sneed and a defendant listed as "John Doe" for "an unprovoked attack in cold blood and broad daylight." Nshimiyimana, 23, owns an exotic car rental business and was researching vehicles for his company. The lawsuit includes a still photo from surveillance video showing an arm reaching out of a sport-utility vehicle on the street with what the lawsuit describes as a pistol circled in red. According to the lawsuit, Nshimiyimana remembers seeing Sneed and his assistant at the car dealership but didn't recognize Sneed from his NFL career or television. Nshimiyimana also does not recall ever meeting Sneed before that day. The lawsuit notes the defendants may have mistaken Nshimiyimana for someone else. "Regardless, the unprovoked aggravated assault of my client with a deadly weapon is part of a pattern of behavior for Mr. Sneed, and he must be held responsible for his actions so they do not happen again," McCathern said. The Titans traded for Sneed last March and made him one of the NFL's highest-paid cornerbacks with a new contract. Sneed played the first five games before a quadriceps injury eventually landed him on injured reserve. Sneed was drafted from Louisiana Tech in the fourth round in 2020 by Kansas City. He won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Chiefs in 2022 and 2023. McCathern said they got no response when they previously reached out to the Titans. "It is clear that the Titans manage their players off the field just as they do on the field. No wonder they were the worst team in the NFL last year," McCathern said of the team that holds the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft on April 24. ___ AP NFL:
