Man charged for hit-and-run in parking lot of Midtown Costco
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 32-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man is facing charges in connection to last month that left a woman seriously injured. Jackson County prosecutors on Thursday charged Demontae Reese with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. Former Pagan's member pleads guilty in armed theft of firearm According to court documents, on the afternoon of April 21, the Kansas City Police Department responded to the Costco at Linwood Boulevard and Gillham Plaza for a serious injury hit-and-run crash involving a black 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML350 that . Investigation into the incident revealed the suspect had , operating a 2024 Kia Sorento with a Nebraska license plate, court documents say. A witness stated the suspect left the Kia and entered the Mercedes-Benz as a passenger earlier in the day. The witness and victim drove the suspect to the Plaza, where the victim and witness left the vehicle and went shopping. The suspect then stole the Mercedes-Benz from the Plaza and the victim and witness called for a ride back to Costco, where the suspect had left his vehicle parked, according to court documents. Court documents say the victim saw the Mercedes-Benz parked, at which time the victim attempted to recover her vehicle by going to the driver's side door and opening it. The suspect began driving through the parking lot with the victim holding onto the driver's door. The victim stated she lost her grip on the door and fell to the ground. The suspect then ran over the victim with the vehicle and left the scene. The victim was taken to an area hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. On May 23, a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) responded to a single-vehicle crash involving the stolen Mercedes-Benz in Polk County. Kansas City Costco hit-and-run victim speaks out
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sunny Kingsley is the pedestrian who was run over by a black Mercedes in the Midtown Costco parking lot last month. She was left in critical condition and says it's a miracle she's alive. Downtown Kansas City business owners issuing a warning: 'This isn't a political issue—it's a safety issue' 'That's terrifying. I was almost dead,' Kingsley said. Earlier this week, Kansas City Police released a picture of the stolen 2015 black Mercedes that was involved in the hit and run on April 21. It has an expired Missouri tag #07PU0M. Kingsley says her significant other owns the stolen Mercedes, although she primarily uses it. Kingsley claims to have spotted the stolen car in the Costco parking lot just before the hit and run. While attempting to get the car back, she noticed someone was inside. 'Black male, he was like 5'8, he had light green eyes, that's what was distinctive, and they were real. He had dreadlocks with blonde tips,' Kingsley explained. She was holding on to the black Mercedes as it drove away. 'He drove off with me, holding on to the car, and then by the time he was going, I was too scared to let go and do anything. Then I finally let go and he ran over me, went over my whole head,' Kingsley said. 'My skull is cracked, both of my ears were mangled, my whole face, my collarbone, and I have a rib that is broken.' Kingsley was left with multiple other injuries and faces a long road to recovery. 'I must have only been here by the grace of God and by the people that we're still talking to me, because they said, every time I went unconscious, I was not breathing. So I could have been gone,' Kingsley explained. Now, she wants justice and the person who ran over her to be held responsible for their actions. 'I remember that day and what he looked like, and those things keep popping in my head. Everything else is just a blur, but I can distinctly remember that, and that's horrifying,' she said. 'We should come together as a community and help one another, love one another. That's our purpose, not to hurt people.' A spokesperson told FOX4 Wednesday, 'I just spoke with the investigative sergeant this morning. There are no case updates currently, but they are actively pursuing all leads as they come in.
