Another batch of students made it to the finish line Sunday for a local college graduation. Students at Mercyhurst University walked the stage at Erie Insurance Arena Sunday afternoon to finish off their college careers. Gannon University hosts 2025 commencement ceremony Saturday Over 700 students received diplomas at the ceremony, as hundreds more cheered on the graduates from the stands. Mercyhurst also gave top honors to the recipient of the Carpe Diem Award, which goes to the student who made the most positive impact on the university. New Penn State Behrend grads hopeful as they enter uncertain job market 'I think Mercyhurst education and just Mercyhurst in general really helped us go out and do great things in the world, and I see a lot of potential in all of them, and I think we're going to go do great things,' said James Tonks, Carpe Diem Award recipient. Mercyhurst University has named a new executive director of the Thomas J. Ridge Department of Intelligence Studies program. Intelligence Leader Ted Stanich can now add academia to that list. Mercyhurst University has named Stanich the new executive director of the nationally recognized Thomas J. Ridge Department of Intelligence Studies program. 'Why Mercyhurst? Mercyhurst really is a gem of a program. It was the first and it's the one that's known throughout the intelligence community,' Stanish said Stanich said he was also drawn to the interdisciplinary strengths of this liberal arts university. New signage seen around Liberty Park, Highmark Amphitheater takes new name 'The intel community right now, the development of the skills and the breadth of threats are contingent to emphasize that we need people with additional skills that can pivot to a new area,' he continued. The program's namesake, Erie native and former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge, was present for the announcement. Ridge, who served as the nation's first U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, said both the public and private sectors need digital intelligence professionals. 'I think the digital world offers opportunities and challenges to the proportion of which we are not aware,' Ridge said. The university's VP of strategic initiatives thinks Stanich can prepare students for this critical work. Some Mercyhurst students are saying 'bon voyage' this summer for a unique study abroad experience. Tuesday night Mercyhurst professors and students gathered for a trial run before they set sail to Greece at the end of the semester. Albion residents not pleased with plans to build new sports complex Attendees got to meet their peers traveling with them and get a taste of Greek culture before spending 10 days in the Mediterranean country. 'There's three separate professors teaching, so we're covering everything from Homer, The Illiad, and we're doing history, we're doing culture, we're doing food, we're doing history, politics, the economy,' said Peter Zohos, Mercyhurst dean of school of business.
