'Timing must be right,' Nur Jazlan cautions against rushing Johor state election
JOHOR BARU: The Johor government should not rush to dissolve the state legislative assembly to pave the way for a state election, even though the favourable public acceptance towards the current administration.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said there was still much that the state government could do for the people in Johor.
"For me, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has done a good job. As such, the state election can be held at any time after the current term ends.
"But it is also important to assess public support and acceptance, including the policies and services implemented by the Menteri Besar, the Exco line-up, and the elected representatives.
"This is to obtain an indication that the timing is right for holding the state election. There is no need to rush, what is important is that much can still be achieved during the remainder of the term," he said after the Meriah Raya Outreach Programme here last night.
On a related matter, Nur Jazlan said voters aged 18 and above, who will cast their ballots in the 16th General Election, must be given sufficient awareness and understanding of the country's democratic system.
He said this would help the younger generation make informed choices and avoid confusion when choosing their representatives.
"Young voters are like white canvases…it's our duty to shape their thinking responsibly. This is not about partisan influence, but to ensure they understand the true purpose of democracy.
"I don't want our youth to be misled by political propaganda or false information spread on social media, especially those that exploit sensitive issues like race, religion, and royalty (3R)," he said.
