Des Moines car show featuring lowriders to benefit St. Jude Children's Hospital

DES MOINES, Iowa — A car show featuring lowriders at Water Works Park this weekend will benefit the St. Jude Children's Hospital. This is the fifth year of the Lowdown Roundup car show. The show features any vehicle that has a modified suspension, as well as muscle cars, imports, hot rods, and rat rods. The main requirement – no stock vehicles. Forecast: Heat builds, smoke lingers There will also be a number of different contests for the register show vehicles and attendees. One such contest includes the Lowest Limbo contest, where show vehicles will have to travel under a limbo stick with their own power. Event organizers say the car show is a family friendly event and hope to see many people attend. 'So, we are on the west side of Water Works, so we have this entire west loop so we have plenty of room to grow when it comes to the actual show. And then we have the entire loop, which is about two and a half miles where we can kind of cruise around and show off our cars,' Heidi Henckel, event director, said. 'We do a low limbo. So it's primarily a limbo for vehicles so we can see who sets the lowest. And all are welcome. Custom vehicles, lifted, trucks, imports, lowriders, mini trucks, classics, rat rods. It'll all be here.' Tickets to the car show are $5 for adults and free for kids. Event organizers say all proceeds made from the car show will go to the St. Jude Children's Hospital. The car show runs from Friday, May 30 to Sunday, June 1 at Water Works Park in Des Moines. For more information about the car show visit their website. Local tattoo artist arrested after Clive police say he sexually assaulted 2 at shop

CLIVE, Iowa — A local tattoo artist has been arrested after police say two victims reported being sexually assaulted at a tattoo shop the artist worked at. According to the Clive Police Department, a victim came forward on May 15 and reported being sexually assaulted by an artist during an appointment at a Clive tattoo shop. Several days later a second victim came forward and also reported being sexually assaulted while at the same tattoo shop, police said. Body believed to be of missing Eddyville boater found in Des Moines River As a result of the investigation, local tattoo artist Mark Cates, 27, was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with intent to commit sex abuse on Friday. According to police, Cates was employed at the Clive tattoo shop when the alleged assaults occurred. The Clive Police Department said support services are being offered to the victims and encourages any other potential victims to contact the department. 'We recognize how difficult it can be to come forward after experiencing something traumatic, and how we want anyone who feels uncomfortable or violated to know they are not alone. Even if you're unsure about what happened, reaching out to law enforcement can be a crucial step. We approach these situations with respect, discretion, and a commitment to taking every report seriously,' Officer Courtney Owen, a sex assault advocate and the lead investigator of the case said in a statement. Anyone with information about the case can contact the Clive Police Department through Westcom dispatch at (515)222-3321. CIWW says treatment facilities working near capacity, requests voluntary use reduction

DES MOINES, Iowa — Central Iowa Water Works announced on Friday that treatment facilities are working near capacity and that it's requesting a voluntary reduction in lawn watering. According to CIWW, the current challenges facing treatment facilities are due to the water supply conditions from nitrate concentrations in both the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers. Despite the issue, all finished water meets state and federal regulations for drinking and other uses, CIWW said. Ernst responds to jeers on Medicaid cuts: 'Well, we're all going to die' Now, as we head into the summer months CIWW is asking residents to reduce how much they water their lawns, as CIWW says lawn watering is the greatest use of water in warm weather. 'If everyone cut their lawn watering by 25 percent it would help our water treatment plants meet the essential water needs of our community,' Tami Madsen, executive director of CIWW, said in a statement. 'By reducing watering and waiting for expected rain Tuesday, we can keep lawns looking nice while also being good stewards of our water supply.' CIWW provided the following tips for reducing lawn watering: If you normally run your sprinklers for an hour, water for 45 minutes. If you water for three days, only water one or two. Consider watering only your front lawn. Water in the early morning or late evening. Don't water on Monday. Blank Park Zoo breaks ground on roaring new lion conservation center

DES MOINES, Iowa — In April 2024, the Blank Park Zoo announced plans for the largest renovation project in its 60-year history, and on Tuesday morning, zoo leaders broke ground on phase one. The new lion conservation center will triple the space for the zoo's lions, while adding a trio of viewing experiences for guests, and even an immersive VIP viewing area. The exhibit is the first addition of the zoo's ongoing 'Expand the Impact' capital campaign an $18 million renovation project aimed at enhancing animal and guest experiences and conservation efforts. Quarry Springs Park in Colfax adds 40 new RV sites 'We're a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and so those are partners that we have throughout the United States that partner with not only best practices for animal management, but also for conservation programming. And so we're excited to be a part of this network. This new space will allow us to become one of the leaders in lion conservation. So, our work will be done, not only here in the United States, but we also work with the African Lion Safe Program, which stands for Saving Animals from Extinction. And that'll be, our work will extend internationally into the wild as well,' said Anne Shimerdla, President and CEO of the Blank Park Zoo. Leaders with the zoo say once the lions are moved into this new area, their existing exhibit will be used to expand the tiger area. The zoo says they're hoping for the new lion conservation center to be open to the public beginning late spring/early summer of 2026.
