Mets' success continues to hinge on Francisco Lindor as star breaks out of slump

Try it free PHILADELPHIA — It is just about inarguable at this point. As Francisco Lindor goes, so go the Mets. Advertisement During the seven-game losing streak, the reliable and likely All-Star shortstop went 3-for-26, including entering play Saturday in an 0-for-18 slump. That skid was gone by Saturday's third inning, when Lindor jumped on what would be the first of three consecutive Mets home runs. After an 11-4 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park was secured, that home run meant the Mets have won the past 28 games in which Lindor has homered, just one shy of the all-time MLB record established by Carl Furillo from 1951-53. Francisco Lindor hits a two-run double during the Mets-Phillies game on June 21, 2025. Jason Szenes / New York Post Advertisement The equation might be as simple as this: When Lindor is playing well, the Mets win. And so the Mets won and Lindor played well, brushing aside concerns about his broken pinkie toe and lugging the team on his back once more. Lindor finished 2-for-5 with one of the Mets' seven home runs, a double and three RBIs, most importantly jump-starting the Mets' comeback in the third. Advertisement Francisco Lindor celebrates during the Mets-Phillies game on June 21, 2025. Jason Szenes / New York Post Down 3-1 entering the frame — an early hole the team had become accustomed to during the tailspin — Lindor stepped into a full-count four-seamer from righty Mick Abel and crushed it to the deepest part of Citizens Bank Park, 406 feet to left-center. Following their leader, Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto then added blasts of their own to become the first Mets to go back-to-back-to-back since Nimmo, Lindor and Jeff McNeil did it in 2022. His damage done from the left side of the plate, Lindor turned around against lefty Tanner Banks in the sixth. Advertisement CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS With the Mets clinging to a one-run edge and two on base, Lindor snuck a double off the wall in the right-field corner, scoring two to put the Mets ahead, 7-4, and perhaps allow his team to breathe again. Lindor did not play like an athlete who broke his right pinkie toe just two and a half weeks ago and missed only one game as a result. There has been wonder about whether the Mets would be better off giving their everyday shortstop a day or two to allow that toe to heal. As he continues to play an excellent shortstop and his bat once again looks strong, Lindor reminded why he is so difficult to pluck out of the lineup.

Mets crush seven homers in emphatic rout of Phillies to finally snap skid

Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free PHILADELPHIA — That's one for each game of the now deceased losing streak. The Mets turned to a tried and tested method for success Saturday night, smashing seven solo home runs to snap a seven-game losing streak with an 11-4 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Advertisement Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto each homered twice and Francisco Lindor, Jared Young and Francisco Alvarez joined the parade with blasts on a night the Mets amassed 15 hits, to finally exhale. The top three in the lineup — Lindor, Nimmo and Soto — combined to drive in nine of the runs. The Mets, who moved into a tie with the Phillies atop the NL East, had scored only 16 runs during the losing streak. Nimmo was philosophical about the losing streak before it was snapped, telling The Post: 'Sometimes it's just your time to fail. It doesn't mean that you are OK with it. Aaron Judge, for example — amazing hitter, unbelievable job, AL MVP. But in the playoffs, it was a huge slump. Did he want to pick that time for it to happen? No. But it's baseball. It happens to everyone.' Advertisement 4 Juan Soto celebrates after hitting a home run during the Mets-Phillies game on June 21, 2025. AP Griffin Canning rebounded from shaky innings early and got the team through the fifth. Overall, he allowed four runs, one of which was unearned, on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Advertisement He departed after 94 pitches. 4 Brandon Nimmo celebrates after hitting a home run during the Mets-Phillies game on June 21, 2025. AP Nimmo homered in the first for the game's initial run, but the Mets' struggles with runners in scoring position continued in the inning as Soto and Pete Alonso were left stranded at second and third (following Mick Abel's wild pitch) by Jeff McNeil and Young. The Phillies countered with two runs against Canning in the bottom of the inning. Nick Castellanos smashed an RBI double and Max Kepler's ground out brought in the other run. Advertisement Canning allowed consecutive one-out singles to Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm, fueling the rally. 4 Francisco Lindor hits a home run during the Mets-Phillies game on June 21, 2025. Getty Images Otto Kemp scored on Canning's wild pitch in the second to extend the Phillies' lead to 3-1. Kemp doubled with one out. Lindor homered leading off the third to begin a barrage in the inning: Nimmo blasted his second homer of the game and Soto cleared the right field fence, putting the Mets ahead 4-3. It gave the Mets back-to-back-to-back homers for the first time since Oct. 4, 2022 against the Nationals when Nimmo, McNeil and Lindor all went deep successively. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS Soto's second blast of the night — a shot that reached the mezzanine in right on a hanging breaking ball from Joe Ross — extended the Mets' lead to 5-3. It was the third multihomer game of the season for Soto. Advertisement He is two behind Alonso's 18 homers this season for the team lead. 4 Griffin Canning pitches during the Mets-Phillies game on June 21, 2025. Getty Images McNeil's two-base error on Trea Turner's fly to center leading off the fifth led to the Phillies scoring an unearned run to slice the Mets' lead to 5-4. On the play, Nimmo and McNeil converged, with the ball hitting off McNeil's glove following the apparent communication snafu. Advertisement Bohm's single brought in the run. Lindor delivered a two-run double in the sixth that gave the Mets a 7-4 cushion. Alvarez and Ronny Mauricio each singled before Lindor hit a shot toward the right-field foul that nearly became his second homer of the night. Advertisement The ball hit the fence, allowing both runners to score. Young homered leading off the eighth for the Mets' sixth blast of the night, placing the Phillies in an 8-4 hole. Soto's two-run single in the inning added to the cushion. Alvarez went deep in the ninth against Taijuan Walker for the Mets' final run.
