Albuquerque's Civilian Response Team Marks 100K Calls

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque's civilian emergency response team marked its 100,000th call three-and-a-half years into service. Albuquerque Community Safety (ACS) launched in 2021 as part of the city's effort to provide a more specialized approach to behavioral health, homelessness, and non-violent related 911 emergencies. Walter Adams was one of the first five responders and is now ACS's Deputy Director of Field Operations. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Adams joins Chris and Gabby to explain how the department is measuring its success and the rapid growth it has experienced. Is ACS making a dent in homelessness? Does having this third option help relieve police and fire crews? Those questions and more are discussed in the full interview above. Adams addresses some misconceptions about the department, including the idea that they only respond to calls related to homelessness. He also explains the efforts behind the Violent Intervention Program and Opiod Education Program, aimed at stopping cycles of violence and helping people recover from opioid addiction. City Councilors Quash Fire Chief's Staffing Plans

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Albuquerque Fire Rescue Chief Emily Jaramillo is the first woman to serve as Fire Chief in the department's 123-year history. As a former teacher, Jaramillo was compelled to switch careers when she had a recruiter come talk to her class. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Chief Jaramillo joins Chris and Gabby to discuss the challenges and fulfilling parts of the job. She also discusses a contentious City Council meeting that had her in the hot seat defending a controversial staffing change she believes will improve response times in the city and ultimately help save lives in an emergency. Some local firefighters addressed the staffing plan during public comment, accusing Chief Jaramillo of abandoning their two-paramedic rescue system and going against the so-called 'gold standard.' However, Chief Jaramillo claims her plan would provide quicker life-saving response to patients in an emergency, and says firefighters will have a chance to improve their EMS skills by rotating between trucks. So why was it ultimately city councilors who quashed AFR's staffing plan? How is the Chief responding to AFR morale? Those topics and more are discussed in the full interview. Are There ICE Raids Happening In New Mexico?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – President Donald Trump has made it no secret that he plans to shake up the status quo on how the United States operates regarding immigration, promising mass deportation efforts. So how are those efforts going so far in New Mexico? This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Sophia Genovese, Asylum and Detention Managing Attorney with the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center joins Chris and Gabby to provide context and answer the main questions and concerns the NMILC is getting from the public. Genovese says their office has been flooded with thousands of phone calls under the new presidential administration. 'We run the full gamut of humanitarian protection,' explained Genovese, of the NMILC. 'We are the only statewide nonprofit who provides free legal services to immigrants all across the state.' Genovese explains that the number one question her nonprofit receives is, 'How can I get my papers, how can I apply for status?' The answer is often nuanced and complex. 'Not everyone can just apply for a green card,' said Genovese. You can't just get in line because there's no line. There's no general application for citizenship.' So, have there been any confirmed ICE raids in New Mexico? What might that look like? And what should someone do if they're approached about their legal status in the country? Those questions and more are answered in the full discussion above. Stay informed with the latest news by subscribing to the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast wherever you listen.
