Bluffton resident ready to take on TPC Sawgrass
PONTE VEDRA, Fla. (WSAV) — A Bluffton resident is set to play in the Players Championship for the first time in his career beginning on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass.
Campbell says his life changed as soon as the putt dropped on Feb. 23, and he won the Mexico open. It was Campbell's first victory of his career and Thursday he will embark upon another first, playing in the Players Championship
It's beautiful,' Campbell said. 'I mean, it's in perfect condition. It's always pure. And we did get some rain early in the week, but I think it's still drying out. So it should be, you know, still have some teeth on it. I'm just excited to go play it.'
Campbell spoke Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. The 32-year-old is one of 25 first timers at TPC Sawgrass. The two-year Bluffton resident seeks to become the first repeat winner on tour this season.
'I really enjoy I think it's the fourth hole,' Campbell said when asked what hole he enjoys outside the iconic 17th. 'It's kind of a short dogleg, right. Water. You just got to be precise with your tee shot and then you have a wedge in. So, it can be an easy hole, but it can also be a hard hole.'
His first huge in many ways since it means he automatically qualifies for this year's Master's Tournament. Campbell told WSAV that he has never played in the Augusta National, but he has been there three times in college for the practice round when he played at Illinois.
He also he plans to use his own caddy for the tournament.
'We'll go out there early and get two practice rounds there or as many as you want where the club caddie will caddie for you. My caddie will just kind of walk with us and see the property,' he said. 'It's like Disneyland. I mean, this place is just up and down, and the 18th hole is just up a mountain. So, I've seen that, but I've not hit shots on it yet.'
In the first round of the Players Championship, Campbell will tee off at 8:24 a.m. from hole number one. He is paired with two other first timers: Matt McCarty and Joe Highsmith.
In the second round the trio will tee off at 1:29 p.m. from hole 10.
