Road closure announced
GREENSBURG – The Decatur County Commissioners on Monday agreed to close a portion of CR 250 W between W. Base Road and Vandalia Road from May 29 through June 9.
Sheriff's deputies from Decatur County and surrounding counties plan to use the stretch of road in question as an Emergency Vehicle Operations Center (EVOC), with deputies maneuvering their vehicles in simulated emergency and often life-threatening high-speed chase scenarios.
Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose told the commissioners he sent letters to those persons who regularly use the road, alerting them of the closure, and has heard no objections.
The road will be set up with safety cones representing different driving hazards in daylight and nighttime conditions. Deputies will use normally scheduled working hours to become certified on the course.
EMS and the Greensburg Police Department take advantage of the closure as well. Instead of driving to the nearest course at the Indiana Police Academy in Plainfield, training can be done locally, saving expenditures of vehicle fuel and overtime.
Meyerrose noted the advantages of setting up a local training area, which will be closed night and day to allow trainees experience in day and night scenarios.
