Governor Whitmer's 2026 $80B budget to be presented today

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Wednesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer's administration will present her new $80 billion budget for Michigan. A joint session of the Senate and House appropriations committees will hear Gov. Whitmer's fiscal year 2026 executive budget recommendations for the first time. State Budget Director Jen Flood will outline the proposed budget inside Heritage Hall at 11 a.m. It will include 10 key proposals that will help lower costs for Michiganders, said Gov. Whitmer. 10 key proposals include: Continue the Working Families Tax Credit, which put on average over $3,500 back in the pockets of 650,000 working families, benefitting half the kids in Michigan. Continuing access to free pre-k for every Michigan four-year-old, saving families $10,000 per child and adding more classrooms. And we are piloting a pre-K pilot program, for three-year-olds, which is anticipated to serve nearly 4,000 children by 2029. Continuing investments in affordable childcare for families. Continue free breakfast and lunch for all public-school students, saving families $850 per year per kid, and valuable time in the morning. Help pay for AP, IB, or CLEP testing fees for students, so that more students can have access to programs that take them to the next level in their education and save parents money on those tests which can count toward college credit — further saving students money on tuition. Continue funding the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, and the Community College Guarantee provides a tuition-free pathway for full-time community college students, and up to $27,500 over four years off the cost of higher education and skills training for high school seniors looking to take their next step! More than 56,000 scholarships were awarded in the 2024 fall semester, and 100,000 students are expected to benefit once the program is fully implemented. Affordable Housing, another historic investment of over $2 billion and build affordable housing in Michigan history, which will support almost 11,000 new or rehabilitated units. This increases supply to ease demand and will help lower housing prices for families. Water affordability and energy assistance expand resources for water affordability and energy assistance, lowering water and energy bills for Michiganders across our state. Combat price gouging – launching a price gouging team in the Michigan Attorney General`s office to combat price gouging. Support Michiganders with disabilities expand the MiABLE program, helping as many as 500,000 Michiganders with disabilities save money. FY25-Budget-BookDownload 6 News Capitol Correspondent Tim Skubick states two possible risks that could come with the upcoming budget proposals, tariffs and fewer federal dollars flowing into Michigan. Right now, 42% of the state budget comes from Washington and Skubick says if Elon Musk cuts what he believes is waste, that could mean some federal monies for the governor's programs may not show up. 6 News will have a live stream of the budget announcement. We'll have a closer look at the proposed budget today at noon. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
