Review: THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME Hilariously Quriky and One of Wes Anderson's Best Movies — GeekTyrant
I'm a huge fan of Wes Anderson and his film, and The Phoenician Scheme is the kind of film that, at first glance, might seem like more of the same, but that would be selling it short. Sure, the pastel palette, symmetrical compositions, and theatrical diorama-like sets are back. But underneath all that visual pageantry, there's a surprisingly intimate story here, one that feels more emotionally grounded than much of Anderson's recent work. The plot centers on Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), a fabulously wealthy European industrialist who names his only daughter, a nun, as heir to his estate and to take over his business. As Korda embarks on a new enterprise adventure, they soon become the target of scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists, and determined assassins. The whole thing is hilarous and it had the audience rolling with laughter. Anderson tightens the focus in this film as it zeroes in on the relationship between father and daughter (Mia Threapleton), with Michael Cera playing a hilariously deadpan tutor who serves as the film's bemused third wheel. As the trio fends off a host of scheming tycoons and foreign terrorists, the real tension lies not in the physical danger, but in whether Korda and his daughter can understand each other before it's too late. Anderson himself described the movie as 'a story about a father and his daughter,' one he long postponed until it 'spoke to [him] again.' The personal connection shows in the movie. The emotional arc between del Toro and Threapleton is strong character development and storytelling, and what starts as an absurd adventure ends on a note that's genuinely affecting. The film delivers its trademark whimsy, yes, but it also takes a sincere swing at exploring what legacy means when passed down through something more spiritual than just a bank account. Benicio del Toro is a riot here playing an incredibly interesting character and delivering one of the most fun performances of his career. I don't think I've ever heard him talk so much in a film before! He's matched by Threapleton, who's fantastic as his daughter, and Cera also delivers an incredibly fun performance as the anxious, academic observer caught in the middle of an increasingly unhinged story. It's refreshing how The Phoenician Scheme trims down Anderson's usual ensemble chaos. The supporting cast is an embarrassment of riches including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, Riz Ahmed, and Benedict Cumberbatch, mostly orbit the central trio, never stealing the spotlight. Their presence adds texture without crowding the core story. The result is a film that feels more focused than some of Anderson's recent work, without sacrificing the style and absurdity fans have come to love. There are moments when the film threatens to spiral into overcomplication, but it always reels itself back with sharp writing and that underlying emotional thread. The story offers commentary on wealth and legacy, and it gently pokes at the absurdity of those who think they can control either. The Phoenician Scheme is Anderson doing what he does best, but with more heart and a little less artifice. It's a film about connection dressed in the costume of a caper, with a soft, lingering melancholy underneath all the delightful absurdity. If you're a fan of the films Wes Anderson makes, you're going to enjoy this one! I think it's one of his best. I loved it!

'Oh youre not scary': Kate Winslet daughter Mia Threapleton recalls her first meeting with Wes Anderson
Washington DC [US], May 30 (ANI): Director Wes Anderson and the entire cast of 'The Phoenician Scheme' were present in New York for the premiere of the film. The film's sprawling ensemble cast, including Benicio del Toro, Bryan Cranston, Michael Cera, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks and breakout lead Mia Threapleton, walked the carpet at Jazz at Lincoln Square, reported Variety. The 24-year-old actor, Mia Threapleton, recalled her meeting with Anderson for the first time during the audition, in a conversation with Variety. "He opened the door and said 'Hello!' and gave me a hug," she said as quoted by the outlet. "He was wearing hotel slippers and pink socks, and I was like 'Oh you're not scary, you're not a dragon, you're not gonna eat me!'" added Wes Anderson as quoted by Variety. Mia Threapleton is the daughter of actress Kate Winslet. She is starring opposite the veteran actors who have earlier worked with director Wes Anderson. 'Breaking Bad' actor Bryan Cranston also opened up about his experience with Wes Anderson on the red carpet during the premiere of the movie in New York. While talking with Variety, he said, "What is consistent in Wes Anderson's storytelling is that you cannot predict where it's gonna go. He is so unique, he is such an auteur, that you just have to buy in, put the seatbelt on and go for the ride." As per Variety, the movie stars del Toro as business magnate Zsa-zsa Korda, who happens to be one of the richest men in Europe. Threapleton stars as his daughter, a nun named Sister Liesel, with Cera making his long-awaited Anderson movie debut as her tutor Bjorn Lund. (ANI)

Wes Anderson's Newest Star Finds Inspiration Everywhere (Even a Napkin)
When Mia Threapleton learned that Wes Anderson wanted her to star in his next film, she did what any normal person would: She asked her agent to call the casting director back to make sure there had been no mistake, and then found a quiet spot on the train she was riding in, curled up and sobbed. 'I couldn't believe it,' the 24-year-old British actress said. In Anderson's latest, 'The Phoenician Scheme,' Threapleton plays Sister Liesl, a nun who is estranged from her father, the eccentric businessman Zsa-zsa (Benicio Del Toro). He wants to reconnect and make her his heir. Chic in a white sleeveless top, her long blond hair falling in loose waves around piercing blue eyes, Threapleton was preparing to head to the Cannes Film Festival, where 'The Phoenician Scheme' premiered this month. The movie is by far her most prominent role to date — not that you would recognize her in it even if she were a familiar face. 'It was a lot,' she said of the I-did-my-makeup-in-a-closet-and-cut-my-hair-with-garden-shears look: blunt brunette bob, garish turquoise eye shadow, bold red lip. But she trusted Anderson because she had long admired his work. She grew up with the director's stop-motion 'Fantastic Mr. Fox,' and his coming-of-age romance, 'Moonrise Kingdom,' is a personal favorite. 'I remember watching it and thinking, 'I'd love to be able to do that,' so then having this opportunity to do that was such a surreal experience,' said Threapleton, who, unlike Sister Liesl, laughs readily and occasionally breaks into a smile that plays up the likeness to her mother, the actress Kate Winslet. ‘The Phoenician Scheme' Review: Wes Anderson's Latest Loopy Father Figure
Aside from Sofia Coppola and her princesses in gilded cages, Wes Anderson might be the filmmaker who is most obsessively focused on a single theme. A charming but outlandishly inept father is once again in the spotlight for his latest comedy, 'The Phoenician Scheme.' As in several other films directed by Mr. Anderson, an ebulliently wacky dad, this time played by Benicio del Toro, tries to reconnect with a suspicious and wounded offspring, in this case Liesl, a novitiate played by Mia Threapleton. It's 1950, and she hasn't seen the old man in six years when he, Zsa-zsa Korda, an internationally loathed rogue trying to pull off a massive series of construction projects, reunites with her to tell her she's his sole heir. Her nine brothers? They don't count, he tells her. One of them fires flaming arrows at the pair (from a crossbow) as they discuss matters.
