Police Visit 'Dangerous Dog,' Unprepared for What They Find
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A large dog was reported for being potentially "dangerous," but when police arrived, they weren't prepared to see what breed he actually is. Dog owner Jamal Miah was walking his dog, named Kenzo when the enormous pup got himself into some trouble. The excitable dog doesn't quite understand his size, so, when he got too close to an elderly woman walking her small dogs, he "accidentally knocked [her] over." As it were, Kenzo is no small Chihuahua, but rather, a Central Asian shepherd dog. The breed can be up to 27.5 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh as much as 110 pounds, according to the American Kennel Club, making Central Asian shepherd dogs incredibly strong and powerful. Despite Kenzo's size, Miah, from London, in the U.K., told Newsweek that his dog is "calm, friendly, and well socialized." He doesn't mean any harm, but his sheer size and weight means that accidents may occur. "The police were called several times in the past, mostly because of Kenzo's appearance," Miah said. "While he meant no harm, some members of the public overreacted and demanded that he be put down. "But Kenzo is truly a gentle giant. He used to get along well with other dogs until he was bitten by one—since then, he's become quite defensive around unfamiliar dogs," he continued. Following the incident in 2024, police officers arrived to find out what happened and take a statement. Miah said they were "visibly shocked" by Kenzo's size, but, after observing the dog, they "quickly saw that he had a very calm temperament and was well-behaved." Newsweek contacted Kent Police officials who said they were contacted after a woman "was injured after being approached by a larger dog" in February 2024. A statement from Kent Police said: "The woman sustained minor injuries after falling to the ground. Officers attended and spoke to both dogs' owners. Inquiries were completed and a 44-year-old man from the local area was issued with a community resolution, requiring him to apologize to the woman and no longer use a long lead, of which the woman was made aware." This advice is also recommended by the AKC; their experts said that the breed must be contained when exercising, such as a fenced yard or on a leash. The breed is highly intelligent and independent, known for its fearlessness. Their natural protective instincts are second to none, which is why the AKC says Central Asian shepherd dogs are not for first-time dog owners. Miah posted about the experience on TikTok (@jamalmiahomg) in 2024 and reposted the clip again earlier this year. The reposted video went viral with over 1.5 million views and more than 65,000 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. The caption layered over the video reads, "Police visit dangerous dog Kenzo," while showing the pup gently approaching the two officers. The incident was a "difficult and stressful time" for Miah who felt a lot of negativity toward his dog's breed. Even now, he believes that people judge Kenzo based on his size, without taking the time to see what his temperament is like. "It felt like we were being publicly shamed for simply owning a large dog. Social media was especially harsh as we received a lot of negative attention," Miah told Newsweek. He continued: "I just want people to understand that it's not the breed—it's how you raise and handle the dog that matters. Kenzo is proof that with love, discipline, and proper training, even the most-powerful breeds can be calm, affectionate companions." After sharing the video on social media in April, the post has amassed over 1,700 comments online so far. One comment reads: "Big dogs do look intimidating but that's no reason to sentence them to this treatment." Another TikTok user wrote: "see what a difference a big dog is like in right hands." A third commenter added: "I have total respect for how this whole situation was handled. Kenzo is beautiful." Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? Tripura police initiate investigation against former deputy chief for pro-Pakistan posts
States » East Agartala, May 11 (UNI) Tripura police launched an investigation against a former Upa-Pradhan (Deputy Chief of Panchayat) of Nurpur village of Kailashahar in Tripura's Unokoti district for his pro-Pakistan post following a complaint lodged by Tripura Pradesh Congress on Saturday. Police said the accused, Achhad Miah, was summoned to the police station and questioned for a long time. Although he deleted the post and sought mercy for the misdeed, police are investigating his connection to other countries and groups. 'He has been asked to appear at the police station daily until further notice,' police said. The posts quickly went viral, triggering communal tension in the district. Defibrillator saved man's life within six months of being installed
A defibrillator donated to a Shipley Islamic centre saved the life of a person living nearby, within just six months of its installation. The Shipley Islamic Education Centre, located on Aireville Road, received the device as part of a British Heart Foundation (BHF) scheme funded through money raised by Royal Mail staff. The centre's secretary general, Ashraf Miah, said: "We told all the users of the centre to communicate to their families and neighbours that we had a defibrillator and that it was here unlocked and ready to be used. "Just six months later it was used successfully on a man from the South Asian community who had a cardiac arrest at home." The man, in his 60s, was saved when someone ran to the centre, retrieved the defibrillator, and used it on him before the ambulance arrived. Mr Miah said: "The family came back to the centre to say thank you. "You must suppose that if we had not been given the defibrillator then this man could very likely have died. "We are so grateful to Royal Mail and the British Heart Foundation for giving us this. "We are very aware that people from our community have a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease which can lead to cardiac arrests, so we feel better protected knowing this defibrillator is close to hand. "The centre is used for so many things, from prayer and study of the Quran to women's groups, exercise classes, and children's groups. "We are busy all the time, with so many people coming and going. "It is great that all of our neighbours know that this defibrillator is for them too, and I would urge them to come and get it if they are ever near somebody who is receiving CPR." Royal Mail staff have so far raised more than £1 million for the scheme, through a variety of fundraising activities including running, cycling, trekking, and baking. Greg Sage, director of corporate affairs and ESG at Royal Mail, said: "Raising £1 million in just two years is an extraordinary achievement." The partnership between Royal Mail and BHF has seen the installation of hundreds of defibrillators, CPR training for thousands of young people, and improved access to cardiac nurses and heart health information in various formats. Additionally, Royal Mail has introduced initiatives like applying a BHF postmark on mail, offering CPR training to staff, and supporting heart health with healthier meals and blood pressure monitors.

Man guilty of selling fake halal meat to restaurants
A food wholesaler has been found guilty of fraud by falsely distributing chicken as halal meat and putting unsafe food on the market. Hamil Miah, 46, from Cardiff, was the owner of Universal Food Wholesale Limited. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard chicken from Miah's warehouse in Bessemer Road, Cardiff was falsely sold as Halal meat to restaurants and takeaways. He has been remanded in custody until the sentencing, but judge Vanessa Francis told Miah he could face up to 10 years in prison. After deliberating for three hours on Friday, a jury found Miah guilty of 10 counts of fraud and food safety offences. During the two-week trial, the jury heard Miah created a "smokescreen" of companies to mislead investigators, while he was actually running the entire operation himself. The jury was also told the takeaways and restaurants believed they were dealing with a number of different companies and all believed they were buying halal chicken. Some of the chicken was bought as halal, but poor hygiene and cross-contamination in the warehouse meant none of it could be truly classified as such. There were also long periods of time when the warehouse did not receive halal meat from wholesalers, but continued to supply chicken to restaurants and takeaways who believed it was halal. The sell-by date of some chicken was altered and labels did not have the correct information on them to enable the source of the meat to be properly traced. Miah claimed he only ran Universal Food Wholesale Ltd, which used pre-processed halal chicken, and said on-site processing was handled by Universal Poultry Ltd, run by his childhood friend Noaf Rahman. He denied any involvement in day-to-day processing, though Rahman had previously pleaded guilty to multiple food safety offences. The court heard inspectors from Cardiff council and the Food Standards Agency had made multiple visits to the warehouse and suggested improvements. There was also covert monitoring of the business, which revealed unrefrigerated chicken deliveries to west Wales and a van dumping waste at a tip before being reloaded with food without being cleaned. A pre-sentence report was ordered for Miah, with sentencing for both him and Rahman to take place together. Miah was granted bail, but the judge said she was "not making any promises" regarding sentence, telling him he would need to "get his affairs in order". What is halal meat? Town's successful Ramadan lights project expanded
A community group that promotes diversity has expanded its festive lights project after an "amazing" response. The U-nited Roots group, based in Scunthorpe, and North Lincolnshire Council installed the Ramadan lights last year in Frodingham Road. This year, the lights, which celebrate the Muslim holy month, have been extended to the High Street, Oswald Road and Mary Street. Latif Miah, the group's founder, said: "These lights are more than just decorations. They bring joy and represent our cultural heritage." Mr Miah said he hoped the project would create a lasting legacy for future generations. "We want everyone to feel welcome and included," he said. "By showcasing our traditions and celebrating together, we hope to inspire younger members of our community to embrace their heritage and participate in future festivities. "It's important that they grow up in an environment where diversity is celebrated and understood." The project received £6,160 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. As part of the Islamic month of Ramadan, Muslims don't eat or drink during daylight hours. Eid ul-Fitr, which is expected to take place on Sunday, is a celebration that can last up to three days and is held to mark the end of Ramadan. However, when it starts depends on the first sighting of the crescent moon. During Eid ul-Fitr, Muslims dress in their finest clothes, give gifts, donate to charity, and spend time with their friends and family.
