Man slams 5-year-old against wall, surrenders after hours of barricading himself

Miami-Dade deputies spent almost four hours trying to talk a man of his barricaded apartment after he allegedly slammed his son against a wall Saturday afternoon, injuring the 5-year-old, authorities say. Around 2 p.m., Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies were alerted to the scene at an apartment complex near Tamiami Park. The young boy suffered a 'laceration' at the home, 2055 SW 122nd Ave. The child was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. There were two other children in the home at the time, according to the Sheriff's office. The man, who has not been identified, barricaded himself inside the apartment and spent hours refusing to listen to the deputies commands to come out. He surrendered around 5:40 p.m. At the scene, the crackle of a negotiator's voice over a megaphone could be heard amid sharp pops of smoke and gas grenades. SWAT teams were positioned around the apartment complex, many aiming high-powered rifles at the building. A video posted to the OnlyinDade social media platform captured the chaotic scene before the surrender, showing heavily armed law enforcement officers surrounding the area. 'Come out with your hands up,' a negotiator called out in both English and Spanish. 'Let us help you,' they pleaded with him. Miami Herald staff writer Milena Malaver contributed to this report. Cuban rapper Chocolate MC arrested after robbing fan who asked for a photo: MDSO

An avid Reggaeton listener got a rare opportunity when he noticed well-known Cuban rapper Chocolate MC just feet away from him at a Miami grocery store Tuesday. Unbeknownst to him, he would get more than he bargained for when a quick picture quickly turned to the music artist pointing a gun at him, deputies say. Around 8 a.m., the fan, who was not identified, was pulling into a Chavez Supermarket, 101 Opa-locka Blvd., when he noticed Yosvanis Sierra-Hernandez, better known as Chocolate MC, an arrest report detailed. He waved hello to the artist and called him over to take a picture of him. Sierra-Hernandez obliged and walked to his car, but when he got there, he pulled out a gun, pointed it at the man's chest and demanded the vehicle. That's not all he wanted, as he would soon demand the man give him cash too, the report read. When the fan showed Sierra-Hernandez his cashless wallet, he then demanded the man send him money through Zelle — the fan also did not have Zelle. Not getting any money, Sierra-Hernandez forced the man to drive to several places for the next two hours before eventually releasing him unharmed. Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detectives combed through surveillance video, which showed the attempted robbery at gunpoint. After putting up wanted fliers throughout the county, authorities arrested Sierra-Hernandez late Tuesday. As of Thursday night, he still remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Amazon driver kept $45K in goods, dumped empty boxes in Kendall, Sheriff's Office says

If you were tracking your Amazon package and saw it circling a Kendall-area Lowe's parking lot before the signal dropped, it may have been traveling with a driver accused of stealing about $45,000 in Amazon goods. At 11 p.m. on May 2, Adrian Barrera, 32, an Amazon contractor, was arrested 'while illegally dumping cardboard boxes' at the Lowe's parking lot, 9191 SW 137 Ave., the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office said. Detective M. Fernandez, part of the sheriff's office Illegal Dumping Unit, rolled up to the Amazon truck and found its back-bay door wide open. '[Barrera] offloaded empty cardboard boxes from a 26-foot truck and dumped them on the ground,' Fernandez said in Barrera's arrest report. 'The boxes were marked with Amazon labels and individually addressed to different customers.' Barerra told police he picked up 13 pallets of Amazon boxes on May 1, valued at approximately $45,000, from the MIA Amazon distribution center at 1900 NW 132 Place. He was to distribute the load to seven 'different Amazon locations through Miami-Dade and Monroe County,' his police report said. But instead of delivering the goods to the centers, Barrera went to the Lowe's parking lot, threw out the empty boxes and kept the merchandise, police said. Barerra said 'he was in the process of moving and needed the space in the truck for his furniture,' MDSO said. Barrera reportedly told police that he wasn't stealing 'because Amazon didn't track the inventory.' Yes, Amazon. The company that sends you 10 updates when your $5 phone charger blinks at a conveyor belt in Ohio. Zapata then searched the vehicle and found a green metal container in the front door side pocket holding a gram of crystal meth, the report said. Barrera was charged with grand theft cargo under $50K, possession of a controlled substance and violating Florida's Litter Law. Barrera was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and posted a $7,500 bond on May 7, according to the county courts database. He has pleaded not guilty, has a public defender, and will be arraigned on June 2 before Judge Tanya Brinkley.

Police increase security after Israeli Embassy staffers killed

(NewsNation) — Law enforcement agencies across the U.S. are tightening security at places of worship after two Israeli Embassy staff members were shot and killed in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday. A young couple, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were gunned down while leaving an event at the Capitol Jewish Museum. The suspect yelled, 'Free, free Palestine' as he was being arrested, police said. The attack came just days before the two were set to get engaged. While the NYPD says there is no known connection between New York City and the attack in D.C., it is bolstering security at religious sites and cultural institutions across the city, home to the world's second-largest Jewish community. Who were the Israeli Embassy staffers shot dead days before getting engaged? The NYPD said Thursday it is increasing its presence with high-visibility patrols, counterterrorism officers and heavily armed units. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office also announced heightened security measures across Southern Florida, including increased patrols at synagogues, mosques and Jewish schools. 'Due to the horrific targeted act of hate and violence in Washington, D.C., we are taking immediate steps to enhance security throughout Miami-Dade County,' the agency said in a statement Thursday. FBI Chicago assisting DC in Israeli diplomats shooting probe Chicago police told NewsNation it has 'special attention' on the Israeli consulate and places of worship, and is continuing to monitor the situation in D.C. Philadelphia police said there does not appear to be a known connection to the city but urged community members to call 911 if they see anything suspicious. 'We will continue to be vigilant in safeguarding our local Jewish places of worship and community centers, to ensure the safety of all community members,' Philadelphia Police spokesperson Miguel Torres said in an email. The gunman in Wednesday's deadly attack has been identified by police as Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago. FBI agents raided a residence on Chicago's Northwest Side Thursday morning as investigators try to piece together what happened, according to NewsNation affiliate WGN-TV. According to Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, Lischinsky had bought an engagement ring and was just days away from proposing to Milgrim on a planned trip to Jerusalem. 3 busted in sex trafficking sting during week of F-1 Miami Grand Prix: officials

Miami-Dade County 3 busted in sex trafficking sting during week of F-1 Miami Grand Prix: officials Investigators arrested three men during a joint human trafficking sting operation headed by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office over the weekend. Three men were arrested on human trafficking charges during a joint federal, state and local sting operation conducted to coincide with the week of the Formula One Miami Grand Prix, according to the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. The undercover operation — dubbed Operation Grease Monkey — targeted people looking to engage in sexual acts with minors between the ages of 12 and 14 years old, prosecutors said Tuesday. The men arrested responded to ads placed by undercover detectives. When they spoke with a detective posing as pimps, they were told that minors were available for sex in exchange for money, said State Attorney's Office spokeswoman Lissette Valdes-Valle. When the men traveled to a hotel, which was not named by the State Attorney's Office, they paid the undercover officer money and were given keys to rooms where they were told the underage girls would be. Each man was arrested when he opened the hotel room door, Valdes-Valles said. The meet-ups happened between Tuesday and Friday, the State Attorney's Office said. 'The ugly crime of Human Trafficking is made even more dreadful when the intended victims are children. Sadly, individuals are looking specifically for young victims,' Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement. 'Fortunately, as this joint effort shows, the Miami-Dade law enforcement community is united to fight such predators.' Arrested were: Daniel Xavier Oneil, 27; Tito Xavier Gutierrez, 38; and Tangir Jamil Riman, 27. Each man is charged with one count each of human trafficking, which is a first-degree felony, traveling to meet a minor for sex, a second-degree felony, and using an electronic device to solicit a parent to consent sex conduct with a child, which is a third-degree felony. As of Tuesday, Oneil and Riman were being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on no bond on the trafficking and traveling to meet minors charges, and a $2,500 bond for the count of using an electronic device to solicit sex. Gutierrez was being held at Metro West Detention Center on the same conditions. Attorneys for Gutierrez and Riman could not immediately be reached for comment. Information on Oneil's legal representation was not immediately available. The State Attorney's Office worked with several agencies during the multi-day operation, including the Miami, Coral Gables, Hialeah, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Sunny Isles and Surfside police departments, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations. Investigators ask anyone with information about human trafficking in South Florida to call the State Attorney's Office hotline at 305-FIX-STOP (305-349-7867) or to scan the agency's QR code.
