Monday Musings: Recapping the draft; Canes baseball red hot

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BUDDY!!!! Man, what a busy weekend with Miami Hurricanes happenings, and I'm FINALLY done with some crazy life stuff that's pulled me away from my normal Monday Musings. With the NFL Draft now behind us - and with the Miami Hurricanes' baseball team doing the WWE Undertaker sit up move lately with some blistering play after a gross start - there is no shortage of stuff to talk about, so let's get into it. Advertisement 1) In case you missed it - and thanks to the networks' outrageous obsession with Shedeur Sanders NOT getting picked until Saturday, some casual folks might have - Cam Ward was taken first overall in the NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. I styled that last sentence for a particular reason. That's EXACTLY why I worried about Cam going to Tennessee. If he had been taken first overall by the Giants, Steelers, Packers, 49ers, etc., we're hearing ALL about it. But being taken by a franchise without the juice of those big-name franchises helped render his selection to more of a public afterthought on the networks. And that is absolutely ridiculous and inexcusable to me. It's insulting how little coverage his pick got. From no stars to the top overall pick. The ultimate underdog story. Cam won't care, or at least publicly he'd say he doesn't, but I will. That was the LEAST amount of coverage I've ever seen for a top pick. 2) Fortunately, one very prominent member of the Oilers/Titans franchise recognized Ward the following day: Warren Moon. The Hall of Famer and Oilers legend walked into a press conference and handed Ward the #1 jersey. The Oilers/Titans had previously retired Moon's number, but Warren graciously decided to unretire it for Ward. Have to love that. Advertisement 3) I had my piece prewritten on Xavier Restrepo getting drafted. Man, did I jinx it, or something? I have to say I'm floored he didn't go somewhere. He's a first-team All-American and a downright stud on the field. The 4.80 40 should NOT have been a deal breaker. Not when you watch his route running, quickness, and football speed. No way on God's green earth are there 257 players more deserving of being drafted that X. 4) But hey, something things work out in the end, don't they? He reached a free agent deal with the Titans. Ward to Restrepo now has the potential to carry over onto NFL Sundays, and I'll honestly be surprised if X doesn't stick on that roster. Look for the duo to stay together this fall. Took longer than expected, but it ended up in a terrific situation for both. Advertisement 5) A number of other Canes were drafted - Jalen Rivers to Cincy, Tyler Baron and Kiko Mauigoa to the Jets, and Andy Borregales to the Patriots - but the Seattle Seahawks now have my attention after taking Elijah Arroyo and Damien Martinez in the second and seventh rounds, respectively. I particularly love the fit for Arroyo in that offense. The Seahawks don't offer much in the way of receiving threats at the position - Noah Fant is their top tight end - so he should slot in as the top receiving option there immediately. The Seahawks also added Cooper Kupp to go with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, so there's some strong options to draw the attention of opposing defenses even after the departures of Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. Martinez should have a solid shot to stick as the Seahawks' RB3 behind Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet. After Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas spent some time there, another Cane RB finds a home in Seattle. 6) Wow. What a turnaround by Canes baseball since I last penned one of these articles. I'd been harsh on J.D. Arteaga previously, and I don't apologize for that. It was warranted. But over the last several weeks, there haven't been many hotter teams in the country than the Canes. Advertisement Since losing to FIU 10-2 to start the month, the Canes have series wins at Pitt (2-1), Duke (2-1), a ranked Georgia Tech (sweep), and at Boston College last weekend (sweep). They have vaulted from 2-7 in the ACC and all but out of things to now 12-9 in conference play and 27-18 overall. D1 Baseball projects the Canes as in the NCAA Tournament right now as a 3 seed, which seemed completely impossible in March. And that was before this sweep of the Eagles last weekend, so surely their case is stronger now. Miami will have a chance to make a very big statement this weekend, as a ranked NC State team comes to town. A series win there, and things are getting very real for Miami's tournament, which is something that Arteaga badly needs right now in year two. We'll see if Miami is up to the task starting Friday night at the Light. Go Canes!

Xavier Restrepo goes undrafted, but reunites with Cam Ward after signing with Titans

Xavier Restrepo owns the Miami Hurricanes' career record book for wide receivers and looks the part of a prototypical slot receiver. But despite his track record of success at the collegiate level, his draft stock took a hit after a poor showing in the 40-yard dash during Miami's Pro Day in March — to the point where he went undrafted but probably ended up in the best-case scenario in that situation. The Tennessee Titans are signing Restrepo as an undrafted free agent, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, reuniting him with quarterback Cam Ward, who the Titans selected with the first overall pick. Restrepo set the UM career records for receptions (200) and receiving yards (2,844) and was fourth all-time in school history in receiving touchdowns (21). Restrepo, a Coconut Creek native, is also the only player in Hurricanes history to have multiple 1,000-yard receiving seasons. He finished his senior season with 69 catches for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns en route to being named a first-team All-American by the America Football Coaches Association and second-team All-American by Sporting News, the Associated Press and Football Writers Association of America. One year earlier, he set the single-season school record with 85 catches while also logging 1,092 receiving yards and six touchdowns. However, Restrepo ran an unofficial 4.83 seconds in his 40-yard dash during UM's Pro Day, a surprisingly slow time for a wide receiver, after not taking part in the event at the NFL combine a couple weeks earlier. Restrepo said in a post on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account that his right hamstring tightened up during warmups before running the 40-yard dash, which 'prohibited me to opening up and running my fastest.' He went on to say that he had been consistently running between 4.53 and 4.58 seconds for two weeks before Pro Day 'and thought I could still pull it off.' 'I did everything just because it's in my blood to compete,' Restrepo said in the post. 'With that being said, I am now focusing on getting back to 100% healthy and getting ready to play football! Ready to let God take over!' draft analyst Lance Zierlein describes Restrepo as a 'feisty slot-only target who has maximized his talent and honed his craft.' 'Restrepo is a route chef who reeks of urgency and plays much faster than the stopwatch is likely to time him,' Zierlein continued. 'His footwork, leverage and burst allowed consistent separation from man coverage on the college level but contested catches await him on the next level. His instincts, blitz recognition and talent to scramble open when plays break down will make him a favorite of quarterbacks and play-callers. Subpar length and average measurables could create some hesitation for NFL evaluators but the play and football demeanor feel translatable as a future starting slot.'

Haley Cavinder gets engaged to Cowboys star shortly after her sister's rumored breakup with Carson Beck

At least one of the Cavinder twins has found her forever love. Haley Cavinder, who starred for the Miami Hurricanes' women's basketball program with twin sister Hanna, announced her engagement to NFL boyfriend Jake Ferguson. Cavinder posted a photo of herself flexing her engagement ring on her Instagram story with a beach in the background. The photo did not feature any words, nor was a face shown. But ESPN posted a video of Ferguson and Cavinder on the beach together, and she flexed it even more. The engagement comes roughly a month after the rumored breakup of her twin sister, Hanna, and incoming Miami quarterback Carson Beck. Beck transferred to the U, where both Cavinders played basketball, after spending four years at the University of Georgia, where he replaced Stetson Bennett. Last month, Hanna wiped Beck from her Instagram, and Haley went on an "unfiltered" tangent regarding the rumored breakup. "I just want to say one thing, because I can't be too crazy unfiltered on here: If your sister comes to you or your friend or someone that's really important in your life, and they have a gut feeling about a relationship or a friendship, for example, and they just tell you that on a repeated basis, trust your dang sister. Trust her," Haley said. "She's always right. I promise, you or your mom, they're always right." Haley and Ferguson, the Dallas Cowboys tight end, have been dating since 2023. September marked the one-year anniversary of their relationship.. Cavinder said trolls emerged when they made their relationship public. During a YouTube Q&A session with her sister, Haley said she received negative comments about her looks when her relationship made the rounds. "I was in Forever 21 having a great day with my mom and Hanna, and I got this post. And I just started looking at the comments about my face," Cavinder said. But it seems like the negativity has not gotten to the couple. Hanna had initially decided to forgo her final season of eligibility while Haley initially was transferring to TCU, but, in April 2024, they jointly announced a return to Miami to play their final season in 2024-25.
