Cellphone video captures Miami officer firing at driver on hood of moving car near Bayfront Park
A dramatic cellphone video posted on social media captures the moment a Miami police officer opened fire on a moving car while clinging to its hood. Seconds later, the driver stops, gets out of the vehicle and surrenders with his hands up. "It was terrible. I don't know where he got shot. He immediately got out of the car when he was shot," said Sherylann Clarke, the driver's sister. Family says shooting was unjustified According to Clarke, she and her brother, 21-year-old Melenek Clarke, were trying to find parking near Bayfront Park on Sunday night to attend a concert when the incident occurred. "We were at the stoplight, we were in the middle lane. He told everyone else to go with his hand, signaling we can go," she said. The City of Miami Police Department stated that the officer was directing traffic at the intersection of Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 2nd Street when the incident occurred. "We know that a vehicle made physical contact with the officer. As a result of that incident, shots were fired immediately," said Assistant Chief Armando Aguilar of the Miami Police Department. He pulled out his gun to shoot him Sherylann Clarke, who was sitting in the back seat, described the confrontation from her perspective. "The police officer went in front of his car, and he's moving with his car as he's moving, trying to get out of his way. Obviously, they came into contact because he's hovering over my brother's car. Then he pulls out his gun to shoot him," she said. Cellphone video also shows Melenek Clarke lying on the ground with his hands up before being placed in handcuffs. The sound of gunfire caused dozens of nearby concertgoers to flee for cover. "He said that he felt like he was going to die," Sherylann added. Investigation underway Clarke was transported to Ryder Trauma Center and is listed in stable condition. His family is calling for accountability and answers. "I feel he was wrongfully shot multiple times in his vehicle with no weapon," said Sherylann Clarke. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating. Authorities are reviewing the officer's body camera footage and surveillance video from the area. The officer involved was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and has since been released.

Driver didn't mean to hit officer outside Miami music festival, sister says
Details about an officer-involved shooting remained scant Monday, but the 21-year-old man who was shot by a Miami police officer outside of Bayfront Park on Sunday is expected to survive, according to his lawyer. Hollywood attorney Michael Orenstein said his client, Menelek Emmanuel Clarke, was recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, though he had not had the chance to speak directly with Clarke about the incident as of Monday evening. 'I don't know much about details at all yet,' he said. The Miami Police Department said Sunday that a 21-year-old driver hit an officer who was directing traffic outside of Bayfront Park, where the Caribbean music festival Best of the Best was taking place. The officer then shot the driver, and the 21-year-old was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds. READ MORE: Police officer shot driver outside music festival in Miami's Bayfront Park: officials A Miami Police Department spokesperson said Monday that 'no further details will be provided as this remains an ongoing investigation' by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. It is unclear if the driver will face any charges. Orenstein is representing Clarke in an unrelated case in Broward County, where Clarke was charged with aggravated assault on an officer, resisting an officer with violence and armed trespassing. The charges stem from an incident in October 2023 in which Broward deputies said Clarke, then 19, brandished a gun after being told by a deputy to leave a Lauderhill park. Clarke has pleaded not guilty. Clarke's sister Sherylann Clarke told Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami that she was in the car with her brother on Sunday and that her brother was trying to drive around the Miami police officer, not toward him. She said the officer had signaled with his hands that drivers in the area should pull forward but that the officer had then moved in front of their car. 'It wasn't intentional to hit him, no,' she told CBS Miami. The incident caused festivalgoers to run for safety before it became clear what happened. Photographer Kemal Limon told the Herald he was leaving Bayside Marketplace that night when he saw a large crowd of people running away from Bayfront Park. 'I was walking by and saw people running,' he said. 'It was like chaos.' Limon noticed people stopped running once more police cars arrived, as there didn't seem to be an active threat. As a downtown Miami resident, Limon said he is prepared to see anything. 'This is Miami,' he said. 'Anything can happen. I wasn't surprised.' An employee at the nearby Yve Hotel told the Herald that many of its guests were staying there to attend the festival across the street. While he didn't hear the shooting, he saw the high amount of police activity that followed. It wasn't until Monday that he learned from the news what had happened. City editor Jessica Lipscomb contributed reporting.

Police officer shot driver outside music festival in Miami's Bayfront Park: officials
A police officer shot a man who was driving a car outside a popular music festival Sunday in downtown Miami, according to officials. The 21-year-old man was taken to Ryder Trauma Center with multiple gunshot wounds, Miami Fire Rescue said. The shooting occurred shortly after 7:15 p.m. near Bayfront Park, where the Best of the Best Music Fest, a Caribbean music festival, was taking place after a two-year hiatus. It unfolded just after the car hit the officer near Northeast 2nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard, according to Miami Police. The cop was directing traffic and was one of about 50 law enforcement officers assigned to the festival, which attracted up to 12,000 festivalgoers. The officer who was struck sustained minor injuries and was treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to police and Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami. It is unclear if the driver intentionally rammed into the officer or if he will face any charges. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. Video posted to social media by Only in Dade shows festivalgoers running in a frenzy — and police restraining a person with blood on their shirt. The footage also shows someone on a gurney being loaded into an ambulance. Attendees of the festival told the Miami Herald they heard the shooting at the entrance — where the festivalgoers were screened for weapons. The gunshots caused a stampede at gate. Staff at the venue instructed people to get down, but the commotion led to some losing their items and suffering minor injuries. In a statement, festival organizers said the shooting occurred 'in the vicinity' but had 'no connection to Best of the Best Music Fest.' 'The individual involved was not a patron of our event, and the occurrence did not happen on festival grounds,' the statement said. 'For 19 years, Best of the Best has proudly remained incident-free, a testament to our commitment to safety and our ongoing partnership with the City of Miami and law enforcement,' the festival organizers said. 'We are grateful for the unwavering support from the City and our community of fans who help us uphold a safe, family-friendly environment.'
