Butler basketball has scheduling agreement with Notre Dame to open next 2 seasons

INDIANAPOLIS — Butler basketball is welcoming a familiar face back to Hinkle Fieldhouse to tip off the 2025-26 season. Notre Dame, led by coach Micah Shrewsberry, a former Butler assistant from 2007 to 2011, will play in an exhibition game against Butler on Oct. 17. Shrewsberry was an assistant under Brad Stevens during Butler's back-to-back national championship appearances. It's the first of a two-year agreement between the teams. Butler will travel to South Bend for an exhibition against the Fighting Irish at the beginning of the 2026-27 season. Tip times and television assignments have not yet been announced. Butler and Notre Dame have played 103 times previously in the regular season and postseason. The teams have not met since 2015 when Notre Dame beat Butler 67-64 in overtime during the NCAA tournament Round of 32. The Dawgs open the first week of the regular season against Southern Indiana on Nov. 5 and IU Indy on Nov. 8 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler will play in the Greenbrier Tip-Off in November and will return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the 2025 Indy Classic on Dec. 20 against Northwestern. The Bulldogs will host Chicago State on Nov. 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse and will conclude their home-and-home series at SMU on Nov. 15. Eastern Michigan will make the trip to Hinkle on Dec. 2.

Notre Dame men's basketball makes a big weekend addition to its coaching staff

Notre Dame men's basketball makes a big weekend addition to its coaching staff While many Strength & Conditioning coaches aren't viewed as big components for a basketball program, Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry thinks much differently about the position. Over the weekend, the Irish hired Jon Sanderson to lead their S&C program, as he is viewed as one of best around the country. The Ohio State alum started his career at North Carolina before heading to Marshall then Clemson, but had been leading Michigan's program for 15-years, then recently leaving the program to take over duties at Vanderbilt last season. Sanderson helped the Wolverines make five-straight Sweet 16's, making it to the Elite Eight four of those times. According to Notre Dame's press release, he's the only person to make the Final Four as a player and coach. Shrewsberry knows that this coming season will be extremely important in his Notre Dame career, after compiling 28-38 record over his first two years. This hire of Sanderson could push the Irish over the hump, and hopefully make a return to the NCAA Tournament this fall.

Report: Notre Dame basketball will have a home-and-home series vs. Big Ten foe

Report: Notre Dame basketball will have a home-and-home series vs. Big Ten foe Notre Dame football and Ohio State have faced off against each other for the last three years, and while it hasn't gone well for the Irish, it looks like they will be continuing the building rivalry but not on the field, instead on the court. According to a report by CBS Sports Jon Rothstein, the Irish and Buckeyes are in the process of finalizing a home-and-home agreement starting next year, with the first game being in Columbus. The two teams would then face off against each other the next season, but this time in South Bend. The two Midwest powers have seen plenty of each other over the last few years, and that won't be changing anytime soon. Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry was under some fire this past season, as the Irish struggled to a 15-18 record, although it was an improvement from his first year where they went 13-20. Neither team made the NCAA Tournament this year, but for both, expectations will be much higher this coming season and this will be a game that measure each squads potential to return to the tourney.

What is next for Notre Dame men's basketball after losing in the ACC Tournament

What is next for Notre Dame men's basketball after losing in the ACC Tournament Notre Dame's men's basketball season ended on Wednesday afternoon, as the Irish lost to North Carolina in the second round of the ACC tournament. With a 15-18 record, the postseason isn't likely in the cards for Notre Dame. With that in mind, it's time to look ahead to what could transpire in the 2025-26 season. Head coach Micah Shrewsberry will be entering his third season, after compiling a 28-37 record in his first two years. This coming team could give us a good look at what could be the future for the Irish or the beginning of the end of the Shrewsberry era. There is plenty riding on next year, and surely all parties involved are aware of the situation. There is plenty of good for the Irish as they start preparing for the next season, so here are some aspects of what we could see next for Notre Dame's men's basketball team. Player movement The transfer portal has been huge, giving players the opportunity to leave if they don't think the situation is right for them which every team has to deal with now. On top of that, there could be NBA draft whispers as well, although those aren't very likely. Matt Allocco, Burke Chebuhar, Thomas Crowe, Nikita Konstantynovskyi, and Julian Roper are all seniors who won't be with the team next year. As for transfers, I could see Sir Mohammed exploring other opportunities given his opportunities this year. Others could leave as well, so be on the watch for news of players entering the portal. Learning how to win close games Multiple losses were extremely close, with seven of those ending in a two-possession game. This is about toughness, grit, and attitude, which is something that it seemed like the Irish were lacking this past season. This could very well be the difference in playing in late March or going home in the early portion of the month. Recruiting additions This should bring some hope for next year, as the Irish signed a group of four players headlined by 5-star guard Jalen Haralson. The rest of the class is just outside the top-100, as forward Ryder Frost, center Tommy Ahneman and forward Brady Koehler should bring depth and excitement to the program. Don't be surprised to see all of them, especially Haralson, playing early and often. Returning players As long as this trio decide to stay with the Irish, Tae Davis, Braeden Shrewsberry and Markus Burton will fill three of the five. J.R. Konieczny could crack the lineup, but he might be best off the bench with Haralson getting the nod. The biggest question mark is which bigs are in the first five with options like Ahneman and Kebba Njie. It would make plenty of sense to go into the portal for at least some depth, but a proven starter would probably be a better option. Cole Certa should be one of the first players off the bench, as he flashed more than a few times this season. Outlook It's really hard to make a judgement at the current moment, but you have to like the direction that Notre Dame is headed. Sure, Shrewsberry didn't have a successful second season, but this was never going to be a quick turnaround. Recruiting has ticked up, but player development this offseason will be just as important. If more than a few of them make the jump, this could very well the first tournament team for the Irish under Shrewsberry.

Notre Dame basketball coach goes on fiery rant in defense of team after latest loss

Notre Dame Fighting Irish men's basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry went on a fiery rant on Sunday defending the team following a 15-point loss to the Louisville Cardinals. Shrewsberry vowed to turn the program around and even hit the microphone at the podium after the Fighting Irish fell to 11-14 overall and 5-9 against ACC opponents. Notre Dame lost to Louisville, 75-60. "I understand that a lot of people have quit on us," the coach said. "Well deserved. If you hate me, absolutely man. Great. If you think I suck, if you think I can't coach, I'm with you, man, good. Good for you because you're allowed to have opinions. You think I should be fired? Good for you." Shrewsberry vowed the team would not quit on the season even as prospects of making the tournament look grim. "I believe in myself and I believe in these guys. … Don't give up on these kids, man," he added. "What have they done for people to give up on them? I know if you're not with us because we're losing, you don't want to come watch us, fine. Fine. But do it because of me then, not these kids. They don't deserve that. "I don't care about anybody else's opinion. I know who I am. I know I can coach basketball. I know I'm turning this program around. If you gave up on me already, I don't want to see you back here. I don't give a damn. ... We're gonna get this thing rolling." Shrewsberry took over for Mike Brey, who left Notre Dame after the 2022-23 season. He was 37-31 as Penn State's head coach and led them to an NCAA Tournament appearance in his second season. In two years with Notre Dame so far, Shrewsberry is 24-34.
