U of I hosting World Quantum Day Celebration

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The University of Illinois is holding a World Quantum Day Celebration with a guest speaker and hands-on demonstrations this Saturday. This event is being put on by the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST) in the Electrical Computer and Engineering Building. The day will feature the Saturday Engineering for Everyone Lecture by Author Nicole Yunger Halpern of 'Quantum Steampunk: The Physics of Yesterday's Tomorrow.' Mascot ban bill passes in IL House, what it means for local school districts: The celebration will also include hands-on demonstrations, free access to the UIUC Lab Escape and Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 12 and is a free event open to the entire community. IQUIST brings together physicists, engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians to advance quantum information science and train a quantum-ready workforce. This specific center is a core member of the Chicago Quantum Exchange and is pushing forward innovation through partnerships in government, industry and academia. Additionally, quantum science has led to the development of technologies including LED lights, MRI scanners, solar panels, lasers and the atomic clock, which is essential for GPS. World Quantum Day allows the public to get to know the quantum scientists, who will share knowledge and inform the next wave of quantum discoveries. They will cover everything from quantum computing to sensing and communication. While the official World Quantum Day isn't until April 14, the U of I is getting the party started early.
