Former standouts Michael Bradley, David Edgar Canada's guest coaches during FIFA window
Former U.S. and Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley and former Canadian international defender David Edgar have joined Canada as guest coaches under Jesse Marsch during the current FIFA international window. The Canadian team is currently in Halifax preparing for the four-team Canadian Shield Tournament that opens Saturday in Toronto with Canada taking on Ukraine and New Zealand facing Ivory Coast. Bradley will only be with Canada for the Halifax camp while Edgar, an assistant coach with the Canadian Premier League's Forge FC, will also be in Toronto. The 37-year-old Bradley, who won 151 caps for the U.S. from 2006 to 2019, retired after the 2023 MLS season, his 10th with Toronto. After retiring, he joined father Bob Bradley's coaching staff at Norway's Stabaek. The 38-year-old Edgar, from Kitchener, Ont., won 42 caps for Canada from 2011 to 2018. The defender retired at the end of the 2020 CPL season with Forge after a career that included stops in Canada with the Ottawa Fury and Vancouver Whitecaps, as well as stints in England (Newcastle, Burnley, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United, Hartlepool), the U.S. (Nashville SC) and Wales (Swansea City). Marsch, who played for Bob Bradley at D.C. United and the Chicago Fire, has made a habit of bringing in guest coaches to Canada camps. Others previously invited included CPL coaches Mauro Eustaquio (York United) and Patrice Gheisar (Halifax Wanderers) and former Canadian internationals Dwayne De Rosario, Paul Stalteri and Martin Nash.

Michael Bradley, David Edgar join Jesse Marsch's Canada coaching staff as guests
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – Canada's men's national team coaching staff will have some new, but familiar faces, for the current international window. Former MLS and United States men's national team star Michael Bradley will join Canada's coaching staff for the team's training camp here ahead of upcoming friendlies against the Ukraine and Ivory Coast. Advertisement David Edgar, formerly an assistant manager with Canadian Premier League side Forge FC, has also joined Canada's staff. Bradley and Edgar will only serve on Canada's staff for this international window and not into the Gold Cup, which begins later this month. Both Bradley and Edgar took part in their first sessions under Canada head coach Jesse Marsch on Monday. Marsch is committed to bringing Canadian coaches on his staff. He has recently had former Canadian internationals such as Jason Bent and Paul Stalteri join his staff for past international windows. For Bradley, this window will serve as a homecoming of sorts. The midfielder is among the greatest players to ever feature for a Canadian MLS side and will assist on Canada's staff as it prepares for two friendlies at BMO Field in Toronto, where Bradley starred for Toronto FC. Bradley's performances were instrumental in delivering TFC its lone MLS Cup in 2017. After retiring from professional soccer in 2023, Bradley quickly turned to coaching. He served as an assistant coach under his father, longtime U.S. coach Bob Bradley, at Stabaek in Norway. Bradley's experience could benefit a Canada side looking to take the next step after a disappointing showing at the 2022 World Cup. Bradley logged heavy minutes in two World Cups, and as captain of the U.S., he acted as the first line of defense from media and fan criticism. His 151 international caps – the last of which came against Canada in 2019 – are third all-time among U.S. men. His joining Marsch's staff is a full-circle moment of sorts. Bob Bradley had a vital hand in turning Marsch into the coach he is today. The elder Bradley coached Marsch at Princeton University and in MLS with the the Chicago Fire and Chivas USA. Marsch, in turn, coached as an assistant on Bradley's staff with the U.S. at the 2010 World Cup and would later say Bob Bradley is 'the reason I'm a coach.' Advertisement Edgar, meanwhile, is a former center back with 42 caps for Canada under his belt. He spent the majority of his professional career in England with stints for Newcastle United and Burnley. Edgar departed Forge FC earlier this year after two seasons playing for the club and four spent coaching in Hamilton. Marsch also recently brought Nicolas Gagnon, the team's new set-piece coach, into the fold. Gagnon will stay with Canada beyond this international window. Canada is training in Halifax for the first time in the program's history until June 5. The team will continue preparations for the Gold Cup in Toronto after that, including Saturday's friendly vs. Ukraine and next Tuesday's match vs. Ivory Coast. Canada was drawn into the Gold Cup's Group B with Honduras, El Salvador and Curaçao and is going in search of its first international trophy since claiming the 2000 edition of the tournament.
