Eva Air Brisbane Marathon: Meet Michael Byrne, 83, who says it's never too old to run

Approximately 14,000 people are competing in this year's Eva Air Brisbane Marathon, from babies in prams all the way through to an octogenarian. Gold Coast resident Michael Byrne, 83, has run more than 40 marathons in six different countries, but it's Brisbane's unique scenic course that's brought him back for five years. 'It's never too late' to start, said Byrne, who picked up running at the age of 50. This year's participants will complete a 42.2km loop from the Botanical Gardens, across the Story Bridge, through New Farm, and then to Kangaroo Point on Sunday. 'Last year alone, more than 10,000 runners from 35 countries participated, and I'm always amazed by the spirit of everyone who comes to cheer them on,' Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said. The Story Bridge will be open to runners for the first time since Cyclone Alfred, when the pedestrian paths were closed. 'It's a beautiful course and that's why people do these events,' marathon spokesman Jason Crowther said. Beyond the course, it's also about giving back. The marathon is also about giving back. Now in its 33rd year, the sold-out event has so far this year raised over $300,000 for charities. 'We do impact the community with road closures... (so) we make sure that the event is a big supporter of community and charity, just to thank the residents and the businesses (in the area),' he said. Crowther said the event has attracted younger participants too, as some kids will be pushed in prams by their parents in the two-kilometre event. 'There's definitely a resurgence in running at the moment, post COVID we've seen a massive boom. 'There's a massive shift of health and fitness within that younger community now and I think it's great. 'These sorts of events give that younger generation a reason to get outdoors and get active and not just sit behind the screens.' First time entrants will make up about 70 per cent of the participants at the marathon. As Byrne prepared to lace up for the weekend event, he said 'consistency' is key. 'Don't take a month or too off, keep going,' he said. 'Stick to your pace ... don't run off like it's a hundred-yard dash.'

Higher costs driving up Guernsey concrete prices

A leading supplier of construction materials in Guernsey says islanders face high prices for some products due to the costs to make Roussel, manager at Ronez, which supplies aggregate, asphalt and concrete, said rising shipping and labour costs were headwinds faced by the States last week requested a review into the cost of island concrete products after initial investigations found some were "twice as high" as in the UK. Guernsey's competition watchdog, which is conducting the review, said some builders had reported customers could no longer afford to have work carried out. 'Demand dropping out' Mr Roussel said higher shipping and labour costs were factored into the price of some of its said island's "small market size and the smaller amount of material produced leads to higher unit costs", but added prices had risen yearly in line with Byrne, chief executive of the Guernsey Competition and Regulatory Authority, said the review would look at solutions to reduce costs."The building sector has been saying that demand has been falling and this is almost certainly because the cost and viability of investment," he said."Demand is dropping out and that is a development that is potentially affecting growth, because if people are not spending in capital investment, that speaks to things as an economy it would be good for us to solve." 'Key priority' In authorising the study, the Committee for Economic Development said it would show if prices were too high and how it could be review was brought as the States looks to see more new housing built in the Development President Deputy Neil Inder said: "With the development of housing being a key priority of the States, the prices of input products such as concrete and aggregates directly impact the cost of house building."Several large firms in the island told the BBC demand remained buoyant despite higher costs.

Philadelphia's black-tie GayBINGO marks 26 years of fun and fundraising benefiting AIDS Fund Philly

The year was 1999, the room was packed for the event of the year: the first black-tie GayBINGO , a cheeky event that's more than your typical bingo night. It's now the only time Michael Byrne dresses in drag. Twenty-six years later the mission is still the same. "It became the hottest ticket in town. We sold out in 10 minutes," Byrne said. Byrne is the first to host the popular game night in Philadelphia. "I am Carlotta Tendant, who wants you to park it all night," Byrne said. While Carlotta makes people laugh, Byrne shares how there are also serious moments throughout the night. "Way back when we would have tears. Amongst the laughter, we would have tears," Byrne said. "There was a family that would come every year and host a game to memorialize their son. Toileting his son, washing his son, going from being a muscle guy to weighing 70 pounds. It brought us back to the reality of 'what are we doing here?'" AIDS Fund Philly , the original host, is now handing over the reins to Action Wellness . Executive Director Evelyn Torres says these types of events have raised more than $4 million. The funds have gone to help marginalized communities. "What we know now is that people are living healthier longer lives," Torres said. "Normal life spans if they get medical care and they take their medications, and not only that, they can't pass on the virus to their loved ones." While the black-tie event is the biggest fundraiser for AIDS awareness, their monthly GayBINGO events are just as special – where CBS Philadelphia anchor Jim Donovan has also joined in on the fun. From ticket sales to a silent auction. Byrne reminds us, that although HIV is no longer a death sentence, it's still an epidemic. Black tie GayBINGO is Saturday, March 22. To purchase tickets and find other monthly bingo events visit the Action Wellness website .
