Peter Harte sensational two-pointer helps kick Tyrone to victory in Ballybofey
Tyrone 2-17 Donegal 0-20 AFTER SIXTEEN GAMES, Jim McGuinness' unbeaten record in league and championship football in Pairc MacCumhaill, Ballybofey, is gone. Tyrone responded to a blistering comeback and two superb individual performances by Michael Murphy and Michael Langan with a massive kick of their own. It was crowned by Peter Teague, on as a substitute for the injured Padraig Hamspey, getting to grips with Michael Murphy on the Donegal kickout for the final quarter, and a stupendous two-point kick from play from another sub, Peter Harte that nudged Tyrone two in front. Cormac Quinn then grabbed a point after a long spell of possession under the most severe pressure to get Tyrone off to a winning start in group 1 of the All-Ireland round robins. The game opened up in the fifth minute with the first goal, courtesy of Seanie O'Donnell who was on hand to knock home a loose ball dropped by Caolan McGonagle after a Darren McCurry shot dropped short. Seven minutes later, Tyrone produced the sort of play in transition that the new rules allow, but are seldom seen. A shot from Oisin Gallen – held scoreless here for another feather in marker Niall Devlin's cap – fell short. Tyrone brought it upfield with a storming run from Conn Kilpatrick and he led it off for O'Donnell to skip inside his marker and while Gavin Mulreany – in for the injured Shaun Patton – got a hand to it, it wasn't enough. But as a general pattern of play, neither side grabbed a hold of it. Michael Murphy kept Donegal in it with three two-point frees and with the shape of defensive systems not favouring man-markers, Michael Langan had the run of the field, contributing seven points from play. Nevertheless Tyrone went in at the break 2-7 to 0-11 up. Darren McCurry's mental resilience was a huge part of Tyrone's four consecutive scores, but just as they looked to be really getting on top, a Darragh Canavan foul on Ryan McHugh brought a Murphy two-point free. From the next kickout they lost possession and Langan drilled a two-pointer, levelling it up with a single pointer soon after, his trademark jink inside fooling Tyrone again. But from that point, Tyrone outscored their neighbours 0-5 to 0-1. Mulreany was searching for Murphy for every long kickout but Peter Teague suddenly morphed into Seamus Moynihan, racing out in front to intercept the low-hanging ball, flicking away the ones that hung in the air. What's more, Donegal were suddenly hugely wasteful with chances, hitting seven wides in the second half. Harte's flourish of a two-pointer broke Donegal, who found themselves chasing the ball for the last couple of minutes before Cormac Quinn clipped the last point over after advancing from his defensive position. Scorers for Tyrone: Darren McCurry 0-7 (1 x 2 point free, 0-2f), Seanie O'Donnell 2-0, Peter Harte 0-2 (2 point play), Darragh Canavan 0-2 (2f), Michael McKernan, Kieran McGeary, Ciaran Daly, Cormac Quinn, Ben McDonnell 0-1 each. Tyrone find extra gear down the stretch to edge Donegal
Tyrone claimed the scalp of Donegal in a very entertaining All-Ireland series game in MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey. Two first-half goals proved very important to the win as the visitors led by two at the break. Michael Langan and Michael Murphy got Donegal back level and then ahead in the second half with a two-pointer from Patrick McBrearty. But Tyrone finished the game stronger with Peter Harte delivering an orange flag which eventually clinched the win. Murphy got Donegal on the board first from a free and Langan almost had a goal, with Niall Morgan tipping his goalbound effort from close range over the bar. Tyrone hit back when a long ball was dropped by Caolan McGonagle and Seanie O'Donnell was in quick to flick to the net. Langan responded but Tyrone were quick on the transition and they landed points from Michael McKernan and Darragh Canavan (free). A second goal followed for the Red Hand as Conn Kilpatrick got through the middle to find Seanie O'Donnell to find the net again. Michael Murphy and Ryan McHugh led the Donegal response, Murphy's two-point free cutting the lead to two. Darren McCurry edged Tyrone three clear but a free from Ciarán Thompson and another two-point free from Murphy had the sides level. But as the half-time whistle approached Donegal gave away a free and McCurry landed a two pointer followed by a Kieran McGeary point. Michael Langan closed out the scoring to leave just two between them at the break: Donegal 0-11, Tyrone 2-7. While Ciarán Thompson had the opening point of the second half, Tyrone had a small purple patch with four points from Ben McDonnell and three from McCurry. But once again the Murphy-Langan combination responded for Donegal with a two-pointer each and Langan then brought Jim McGuinness' side level. Kieran Daly and Michael Langan exchanged scores before Patrick McBrearty put Donegal ahead for the first time since the first few minutes with a two-pointer. But that was to be their last score as Tyrone closed out the game with McCurry, Darragh Canavan (free) and an orange flag from Peter Harte. Donegal go the distance against Armagh to retain Ulster SFC crown
Another Ulster final epic went to extra-time – the third in a row to do so – and it was holders Donegal who repeated last year's victory over Armagh to retain their title. Substitute Niall O'Donnell steered over the winner to confirm what most of the GAA world already knew – that Jim McGuinness has moulded a team with serious aspirations of even greater glory before this summer is out. The provincial championships are alive and well, and this was another shot in the arm for the much-loved northern series and its enduring appeal. Gripping deciders in Connacht and Ulster and a Leinster revolution along the Boyne have reinforced traditional values, despite Munster's continuing struggle to matter. And the allure of the Anglo-Celt Cup continues to stand the test of time. Armagh - beaten on penalties in 2023 and 2024 - hadn't won it since 2008, and even an All-Ireland title did not diminish the hunger for regional supremacy, but their courage in fighting back twice from seven points down to go ahead for the first time in extra-time was not enough. And Clones delivered once again, in its own unique manner, as 30,000 souls made the pilgrimage to the Co Monaghan town for this annual festival of colour, passion, triumph and despair. Following a cagey opening quarter, Donegal began to find avenues through which to hurt the All-Ireland champions, chiefly by dominating Ethan Rafferty's kick-outs. Daire O Baoill had already identified flaws, using his direct running lines to slice through the cover, almost creating a goal on one occasion for Peadar Mogan, who was denied by Rafferty. The sides were deadlocked on 0-02 each when Ciaran Thompson landed the game's first two-pointer after ten minutes, and from there to the break, Donegal were on the rise. Michael Murphy made an outrageous one-handed fetch while losing his balance to win a free for Paddy McBrearty to tap over, and McFadden, Caolan McGonagle and Michael Langan attacked the Armagh kick-out as they established a dominant platform around the middle. And after a quiet opening, Oisin Gallen exploded into the game, kicking four sweet points on the spin to push McGuinness's men into a five-point lead, before Thompson, with another two-pointer, and Michael Langan left seven between the sides. Armagh met the challenge head-on, stepping up the tempo to finish the half with a flourish, Oisin O'Neill with 0-03, including a two-pointer, to leave three between the sides at the interval, Donegal ahead by 0-14 to 0-11. They had trimmed the deficit back to a single point through O'Neill and Ross McQuillan when Donegal struck for a 44th minute goal, Hugh McFadden lashing a loose ball first-time to the net after Conor O'Donnell had been dispossessed. Darragh McMullan almost responded in kind instantly, firing his shot just wide, but Donegal were back in the groove, restoring the seven-point gap through Ciaran Moore as the game slipped into its final quarter. 70min: Armagh 0-23 Donegal 1-20 Oisín Conaty takes it to extra-time in the Ulster final! 📺 @rte2 and @rteplayer 📻 Saturday Sport on @rteradio1 Live updates here 👇 — The Sunday Game (@TheSundayGame) May 10, 2025 Once again, Armagh's character was in question, and again they answered in emphatic terms. Another Oisin O'Neill two-pointer, a gem off sub Stefan Campbell's first touch and another Conaty effort had them back two within two Jason McGee had the defending provincial champions three clear going down the stretch, and they looked assured in protecting possession, even after Campbell and Jason Duffy had narrowed the gap. But a careless lapse allowed Conaty one last opportunity, and he nailed a glorious equaliser with the game's last kick, deadlocked at 0-23 to 1-20. Armagh had not held the lead at any point in normal time, but Jarly Óg Burns edged them ahead in extra-time, and they held on to the advantage until after the hooter had sounded, when Niall O'Donnell brought the sides level again. But crucially Donegal were able to plunder the Orchard for a second goal on 83 minutes, Ciaran Moore accepting Michael Langan's assist to smash his shot past Rafferty. Rafferty levelled again with a two-point free, but Niall O'Donnell had the last say, Langan again the provider for his glorious 88th minute winner.
