How a Utah-based non-profit is working to fight food insecurity
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah's USANA sells products around the world to help people live healthier lives. But their work does not end there. The USANA Foundation works on a global and local level to transform food insecurity.
Since 2012 the USANA Foundation has been on a mission to help feed and empower the hungry around the world and here at home. They estimate they have fed 2.6 million people.
visited the USANA Foundation warehouse. A group of volunteers were busy assembling food bags. Each bag will help feed a Utah child during the weekend away from school.
Michelle Benedict is the USANA Foundation Director of Global Programs. She explained how the process worked, 'We put out about 1400 bags throughout the week. 1400 kids take a bag home for the weekend and it provides 7 meals to get them through the weekend until they are back to school on Monday morning.'

This is USANA Kids Eats giving children in struggling situations extra support.
Benedict continued, 'The one thing all of these kids have in common is they didn't choose this situation and they are doing their best. They are super tough. They just work through their situation and show up and they get their homework done – even against the odds.'
Last year more than 45,000 food bags helped to feed Utah children.
The work does not end there.
The USANA Foundation continues to work to end hunger around the world with Garden Towers. So far they have built 35,000 towers in 44 different countries.
Benedict explained the towers filled with dirt and then covered in plants 'are meant for families who don't have any way ton grow food on their own. They have no soil, they have no space and they have no means – so providing a tower for them they can grow and it is sustainable.'
The towers don't just provide food, but a way for these families to provide for themselves.
No matter what program you look at, the goal is the same for the foundation; feed the hungry, no matter where they are.
