Seven Cops Hospitalized After Disastrous BMW Chase

Read the full story on The Auto Wire A bizarre twist in the UK unfolded as police in Northumbria chased suspects in a BMW at high speed, only for the cops to crash into the suspect and each other. Seven officers were hospitalized and it's no wonder when you see how mangled their cruisers whole thing unfolded at about 2 am on April 9 when police tried pulling over the Bimmer for reckless driving. Rather than comply, the driver took off and got onto the A1as more officers joined in the chase. According to The Sun, the crash happened at 2:27 am. Thankfully, four of the police officers who were taken to the hospital have since been discharged. Of the other three, two were being kept for observation and one was still receiving treatment for an unspecified leg injury. As for the man and woman in the BMW, both of whom are in their 20s, neither one was injured in the crash. Police are staying tight-lipped about the suspects and a possible motivation for their attempted escape. In fact, Supt Michelle Caisley of Northumbria Police told The Sun people need to keep their mouths shut about why the chase even happened. 'We would also ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community which could impact the investigation.' We've watched countless hours of police chase footage, but never before have we seen something like this. The closest thing we can think of was when a suspect in Arkansas ran from local and state police while driving a stolen Ford F-450 pulling a skid steer on a trailer down dirt roads, the poor visibility leading to a pile-up. But this chase out of the UK was on a freeway in what appears to be clear conditions. How did all those cop cars end up crashing together? Obviously, they were clustered, which is a huge risk to take when chasing an aggressive suspect at high speeds. However, we'll avoid speculation since that sort of exercise of free speech in the UK can and does get people thrown in jail. A1 reopens after serious crash that hospitalises seven police officers

The A1 has reopened in the North East after a serious crash that hospitalised seven police officers. Officers from Northumbria Police engaged in a two-minute-long police chase that ended in a crash on the A1 at about 2.30am this morning (April 9) between Dunston and Swalwell in Tyne and Wear. A man and woman, both in their 20s, were arrested following the serious crash. A total of five police cars were involved in the incident, which police say came about because of a chase involving a dark grey BMW M Sport following concerns "about how it was being driven". (Image: NORTH NEWS AND PICTURES) The road was closed by police and remains closed as a probe began. But Northumbria Police and Highways England have confirmed that the A1 has reopened after the vehicles were removed from the stretch of road. A spokesperson for Highways England said: "The A1 is now open in both directions between J73 Swalwell and J75 Denton. Thank you for your patience." A man in his 20s has subsequently been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and a woman, also aged in her 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving. A total of seven officers were taken to hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries. Four have been discharged, two remain for observation, and one is receiving treatment for a leg injury. The crash on the A1 (Image: NORTH NEWS) Further details reveal that after the BMW M Sport was spotted but had driven off, it was sighted in Swalwell - and at 2.25am police got behind the car to begin a pursuit. Just two minutes later, the crash took place near the Derwent Haugh Road junction. Supt Michelle Caisley, from Northumbria Police, said: 'Firstly, we want to wish all the officers who have been involved in the collision a full recovery. 'We would also thank all those who attended the scene, including our colleagues from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the North East Ambulance Service. 'An investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ask anyone with information that may assist us to come forward. 'We would also ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community which could impact the investigation. 'We recognise this incident has caused significant delays and thank motorists for their patience. The road closure has been necessary in order for our collision investigation team to conduct their enquiries." The crash on the A1 (Image: NORTH NEWS) This includes anyone with CCTV or dashcam of the collision or the events leading up to this, including footage of the BMW. A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 2.29am on Wednesday 9 April to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 northbound near Denton, Newcastle. "We dispatched five ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a duty officer, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by road. "Five patients were transported to hospital for further treatment." A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm that in the early hours of Wednesday morning (9th April) five fire appliances and two Officers attended a road traffic collision in Newcastle. Recommended: Five in hospital in A1 five-car crash involving police as road remains closed County Durham teacher who touched colleague's breasts is banned from classroom "Our control room team received an emergency call from Northumbria Police for assistance at 2.29 a.m., and crews from Gosforth, Newcastle Central, Swalwell and West Denton Community Fire Stations were dispatched to a location on the A1 northbound near to Denton Burn. Crash involving five police cars injures seven officers and shuts A1

Seven police officers have been injured and two people arrested after a major crash involving five police cars shut the A1 on Tyneside in both directions. The officers all had non-life threatening injuries. Four have been discharged from hospital while two remain in hospital for observation with one being treated for a leg injury, Northumbria Police said. Two occupants of a BMW M Sport involved in the collision on the northbound section of the A1 near Denton, Newcastle, were uninjured. Police said a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. A woman, also aged in her 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving. Both remain in custody. Police said officers had tried to stop a car in the Whickham area of Gateshead at around 2am on Wednesday because of concerns over the way it was being driven. The car left the area and a pursuit was authorised when it was sighted at around 2.25am. Two minutes later the car and five police vehicles were involved in the collision, the force said. Four badly damaged marked police vehicles can be seen in pictures of the pile-up along with a car on its side. Images also showed debris scattered across the northbound carriageway. One of the police vehicles had its roof torn off. Crash investigators were sent to the scene. Superintendent Michelle Caisley said: "An investigation is under way to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ask anyone with information that may assist us to come forward. "We would also ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community which could impact the investigation." A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said it sent five ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a duty officer, and two hazardous area response team crews to the scene. Five people were taken to hospital "for further treatment" following the early morning crash, the service said. It also asked the Great North Air Ambulance Service to help and they attended by road. Long after the crash, blue lights continued to flash on an unmarked police car which was crushed against the central reservation barrier. A police detection dog was sent into a black BMW which was wedged between the marked police cars. By lunchtime, crews had begun removing the damaged vehicles and lifting them on to low loaders. The A1 will be closed in both directions between junction 73 at Swalwell in Gateshead and junction 75 at Denton into Wednesday afternoon, National Highways said. Local roads, including the A19 to the east of the city, are heavily congested, the agency added. It said the road closure follows a "multi-vehicle collision resulting in serious injuries". "Due to the severity of the collision a full Northumbria Police investigation is under way, and they advise that it will be protracted," it said. A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "A section of the road is closed in both directions - there are diversions in place from the Derwenthaugh Road junction northbound, and the A69 roundabout southbound.
