Band for Brothers raises funds for area veterans

JOPLIN, Mo. — Band for Brothers kicked off at Ward Waterpark Saturday Afternoon. Visitors to the event enjoyed all kinds of activities, from live music and food trucks to floating on Shoal Creek and a motorcycle poker run. But Band for Brothers isn't just a party, the annual fundraiser supports homeless and at-risk veterans in the Four States. Proceeds will be used for the Veterans Backpack Program, which provides veterans with basic hygiene items, clothes, and money for overdue bills. 'We find that unacceptable and so we are doing that we can to assist, and that is one of the reasons for having an event like this to raise awareness and to also raise money,' said Michelle Lee, Executive Director of OurVeteransFirst. Today's event ran from 2:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m., ending with a fireworks show. If you would like to donate to the organizers at OurVeteransFirst, you can visit the link here. Craven County celebrates NC Legislators in Schools Week

NEW BERN, NC (WNCT) — As part of North Carolina Legislators in Schools Week, Senator Bob Brinson stopped by JT Barber Elementary School Friday morning, Apr. 11, 2025. He toured the school and visited classrooms to get a first-hand look at the daily experiences of educators and students, listen to their concerns and hopefully, help bring about some positive changes. He also met with the director of school nutrition to discuss budgets for in-school lunches. 'Of course, the federal budget has been in flux recently and so, I know there'll be some conversations about what our needs are to make sure that we can continue feeding children healthy lunches moving forward,' Acting Superintendent of Craven County Schools Michelle Lee said. Friday also marked 'Purple Up Day'—a day to recognize and support military-connected students. Senator Brinson even joined students in the cafeteria for a 'Purple Up' lunch. Work begins on $25M project to make CTA Green Line Austin station ADA-compliant

CHICAGO (WGN) — An elevator, escalator, ramp and other improvements will be coming to a renovated Austin station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Green Line as part of a $25 million reconstruction project and an agency commitment to make all rail stations fully accessible and compliant under with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Groundbreaking for the project was held Monday morning at the station, at 351 North Austin Boulevard, which is currently one of six targeted to be rehabbed in the next year. Much of the funding for the project is coming from the federal government. 'I want to keep making these projects a reality, and that's not going to be possible without funding,' said disability rights advocate Michelle Lee. 'Accessibility is really an investment in our communities, it's an investment in our city, and it's really and truly an investment to opening doors to jobs, to resources and to, really, life and all this city has to offer.' Accessibility advocates say the changes will benefit many, including parents with strollers, people carrying luggage or those with temporary disabilities. 'Creating accessibility benefits everybody. It's also a civil right that our community get equal access to our public transit systems,' said Karen Tamley, the president and CEO of the organization Access Living. The work is being done through the CTA's All Stations Accessibility Program, the plan of which was released in 2018 with a goal of making all rail stations fully accessible by 2038. Some stations with existing elevators may have them upgraded or replaced. The CTA says 104 of its 146 rail stations are ADA accessible. Austin is among 14 stations currently funded and in various stages of planning, design or under construction, the agency said. While the main entrance to the station will close in June for the start of major work, riders will continue to have access to the station using its auxiliary entrance. TSMC's $100B U.S. Investment Won't Include Most Advanced Chips, Taiwan Confirms

Taiwan has reaffirmed its commitment to keeping its most advanced semiconductor technology within its borders, even as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) (NYSE:TSM) plans to invest $100 billion in U.S. chip manufacturing over the next four years. Minister of Economic Affairs J.W. Kuo stated that TSMC will not produce its most advanced chips in the U.S. in 2026, according to a Taipei Times report. Taiwan's cabinet spokeswoman Michelle Lee added that the government would likely support the investment if it strengthens the country's competitiveness and global reach. TSMC's $100 billion U.S. investment includes new chip fabs and research facilities, building on its April 2024 pledge of $65 billion, which included plans for a third Arizona plant by 2030. Taiwan plays a dominant role in the semiconductor industry, with TSMC producing nearly 90% of the world's most advanced chips, supplying Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), and other tech giants.
