Recap: Mystics implode late in loss to Aces

The Washington Mystics lost to the Las Vegas Aces 75–72 at Michelob ULTRA Arena on Friday, May 23, 2025, to fall to 2-2 on the season. A balanced scoring effort propelled Washington to an early 18-16 lead after the opening frame. That advantage continued as the Mystics grew a 10-point lead behind seven points and six rebounds from rookie forward Kiki Iriafen and a pair of triple from rookie guard Sonia Citron. Advertisement That lead was short-lived, as Las Vegas stormed back with a 13-5 run to trim their deficit to two points entering the final minutes of the first half. The Mystics responded with a 9-2 run of their own to enter the break ahead, 42-33. Iriafen led all scorers with 11 points and seven rebounds. Citron and Jade Melbourne each drilled for a pair of buckets midway through the third to keep Washington ahead by double-digits. The Mystics maintained a 59-50 lead entering the final quarter as they looked to knock off the Aces. Defense dominated the opening minutes of the fourth, as Washington led 63-55 with 5:54 remaining in regulation. With Las Vegas hanging around, the Mystics' rookies stepped up down the stretch. Iriafen grabbed an offensive rebound en route to a put-back layup before Citron sank a clutch and-1 layup to grow Washington's lead to nine with 3:49 remaining. The Aces didn't go down easily. Jackie Young and Dana Evans embarked on a 7-0 run to make it a 68-66 Mystics lead with two minutes to play as Michelob ULTRA Arena came alive. Citron, like she'd done all night, silenced the crowd once more with a clutch 3-pointer to give Washington some breathing room before Melbourne sank 1-of-2 free throws for a 72-66 advantage. Advertisement Young drilled a pair of free throws before grabbing a steal and drilling a layup to trim the deficit to just two. An ensuing Mystics shot-clock violation gave Las Vegas a chance to tie or take the lead with 15.2 seconds remaining. With the game on the line, Young delivered to knot the game at 72. With 7.2 seconds remaining, Las Vegas' Kiah Stokes was called for a shooting foul, which coach Becky Hammon swiftly challenged. The call was overturned to a clean block and Las Vegas gained possession with a chance to win the game. Jewell Lloyd drilled a game-winning 3-pointer with 2.3 seconds left as Las Vegas stole one at home and handed Washington its second-consecutive loss.

Jaron ‘Boots' Ennis Vs. Eimantas Stanionis Fight Card: Betting Odds

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - OCTOBER 30: Jaron Ennis is shown before a welterweight bout against Thomas ... More Dulorme at Michelob ULTRA Arena on October 30, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ennis won the fight with a first-round knockout. (Photo by) A welterweight title unification bout headlines Saturday's Matchroom boxing card from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In that April 12 scrap, IBF champion Jeron 'Boots' Ennis faces WBA titleholder Eimantas Stanionis. The winner of that bout could move on to another title unification fight. Ennis vs. Stanionis is not the only title fight on the card. The evening's co-main event bout between Raymond Ford and Thomas Mattice also has a belt up for grabs. Below, we look at the betting odds and line movement for the fights at the top of the fast-approaching Ennis vs. Stanionis fight card. Jaron Ennis vs. Eimantas Stanionis, 12 rounds, welterweight - IBF and WBA title unification Raymond Ford vs. Thomas Mattice, 10 rounds, super featherweight – WBA Continental North America title Omari Jones vs. William Jackson, 6 rounds, junior middleweight Arturo Popoca vs. Christian Carto, 10 rounds, super bantamweight - WBA Continental North America title Shakhram Giyasov vs. Franco Maximiliano Ocampo, 10 rounds, welterweight Tahmir Smalls vs. Earl Bascome, 8 rounds, welterweight Francisco Rodriguez vs. Naheem Parker, 6 rounds, lightweight Zaquin Moses vs. Alex Pallette, 4 rounds, junior lightweight PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - NOVEMBER 6: Jaron Ennis poses for photos during Media Day ahead of the ... More IBF welterweight title bout against Karen Chukhadzhian on November 6, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mark Robinson/) The 27-year-old Ennis (33-0-0-1 with 29 knockouts) won the vacant IBF interim welterweight crown in January 2023 with a unanimous decision victory over Karen Chukhadzhian. He retained that title in July 2023 with a 10th-round knockout win over Roiman Villa. Ennis was elevated to full champion status in November 2023 when the sanctioning body stripped Terence Crawford of the belt not long after Crawford unified the welterweight titles with a win over Errol Spence Jr. In his first defense of the IBF crown, Ennis defeated David Avanesyan when the fight was halted before the start of the sixth round. In his most recent outing, Ennis defeated Chukhadzhian by decision in a rematch in November 2024. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MAY 04: Eimantas Stanionis reacts after defeating Gabriel Maestre by unanimous ... More decision in their WBA welterweight championship title fight at T-Mobile Arena on May 04, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) The 30-year-old Stanionis (15-0-0-1 with nine knockouts) won the WBA crown in April 2022 with a split-decision victory over Radzhab Butaev. Stanionis did not fight again until May 2024, after three fights against Vergil Ortiz Jr. were canceled. Stanionis was forced out of the first scheduled fight with Ortiz in early 2023 because of an emergency appendectomy. Ortiz withdrew from the rescheduled contest in March of that year because of rhabdomyolysis, a serious muscle condition. Then, in July, the fight was again scratched at the last minute because of dehydration. Stanionis defended his title in May 2024 with a unanimous decision win over Gabriel Maestre. ESPN has the two 147-pound competitors ranked at the top of the welterweight division, with Ennis at No. 1 and Stanionis at No. 2. Ennis opened as a -430 betting favorite over the +310 Stanionis. There has been significant line movement on the fight. Today, Ennis is the -800 favorite, while Stanionis is a +333 betting underdog. Brian Norman Jr. retained the WBO welterweight title in March with a TKO win over Derrieck Cuevas. He offered the following after that win: 'There's other belts out there and other champions out there. So until I'm on top, I can't say nothing. I'm not going to wait on nobody. Barrios is over in the corner, hiding, doing his own thing. Where's he at? I'm trying to get that belt up from off him. Get the belt off him and then go undisputed against the winner of the April 12th fight. I'm the Assassin. Once I sign the contract, my eyes are only on you." RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - JUNE 01: Raymond Ford of Team Matchroom enters the ring prior to the during ... More the WBA World Featherweight Title fight between Raymond Ford of Team Matchroom and Nick Ball of Team Queensberry on the 5v5: Queensberry v Matchroom Fight Night card at Kingdom Arena on June 01, 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. (Photo by) Raymond Ford (16-1-1, 8 KOs) won the vacant WBA featherweight title in March 2024 with a TKO win over Otabek Kholmatov. Ford lost a split decision to Nick Ball in his first defense of that title. After his first career defeat, Ford moved up to super featherweight, beating Orlando Gonzalez by unanimous decision in a 10-round contest. In his second fight at 130 pounds, the 26-year-old from Camden, New Jersey, faces Mattice for the WBA Continental North America super featherweight title. ESPN has Ford ranked at No. 7 in the division. He is No. 6 according to the IBF, No. 5 with the WBA, No. 4 in the WBC rankings and No. 8 with the WBO. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - NOVEMBER 05: Thomas Mattice makes his entrance for a junior lightweight bout ... More against Luis Melendez at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on November 05, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) Thomas Mattice (22-4-1 with 17 KOs), who fights out of Cleveland, Ohio, is coming off a loss in his last bout after an accidental headbutt left him unable to continue his September 2024 contest against Eduardo Hernandez. Mattice is unranked by the major sanctioning bodies and ESPN. I'm excited to fight in Atlantic City, it's pretty much a home fight for me so I'm going to do what I do best and put on a show,' said Ford. 'I know a lot of guys turned me down and it's been hard to get someone to take the fight. Credit to Mattice for stepping up but there's nobody at 130 pounds getting in my way. I'm coming for all the champions, and they can't keep running forever.' 'I'm super excited about the opportunity,' the 34-year-old Mattice said. 'I know buddy, but not personally but anyone that knows me, knows I'll scrap with whoever whenever, it's really easy with me. I'm looking forward to an action-packed fight with my hands being raised at the end #andthenew.' Ford opened as the -950 betting favorite over the +550 Mattice. Like the main event, this contest has seen some big line movement. Today, Ford is listed at -1400 over Mattice, who is a +600 betting underdog. UFC 314 Bout Order Set—Is This 2025's Strongest Card So Far?

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 07: (L-R) Opponents Alexander Volkanovski and Diego Lopes face off during ... More the UFC 314 press conference at Michelob ULTRA Arena on March 07, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) UFC 314 looks about as good on paper as any card we've seen since UFC 308, or maybe even UFC 300. It's that strong on paper. The official fight order was released per ESPN. Take a look. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 07: (L-R) Opponents Bryce Mitchell and Jean Silva face off during the UFC ... More 314 press conference at Michelob ULTRA Arena on March 07, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) The main event is obviously a huge and intriguing fight. However, if I had to point to one of the other fights that has me excited, it's Jean Silva vs. Bryce Mitchell. Everyone knows Mitchell isn't a serious title contender, but for worst, he has made himself a bigger name in the UFC. Silva is a rising star whose shine will get even brighter if he knocks Mitchell out. UFC fans will be watching this main card fight closely. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JANUARY 11: (L-R) Marco Tulio of Brazil punches Ihor Potieria of Ukraine in a ... More middleweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on January 11, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Everyone is focused on Pitbull's UFC debut—and with good reason—but Dana White Contender Series standout Tulio could make another moment for himself in Miami when he clashes with Tresean Gore on the prelims. Tulio is a powerful middleweight who needed two appearances on DWCS to get the call. He scored an explosive first-round KO win over Ihor Potieria in his main roster debut. If Tulio can knock off Gore, we may have a rising star at middleweight. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 07: (L-R) Opponents Michael Chandler and Paddy Pimblett during the UFC 314 ... More press conference at Michelob ULTRA Arena on March 07, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Michael Chandler is on the hot seat. If he loses to Paddy Pimblett, expect to see his stock plummet even more than it already has since he arrived in the UFC. Chandler has called out Conor McGregor, despite most people believing the former champion is done in the Octagon. However, if he can't beat Pimblett, the days of considering Chandler as a potential title contender are officially over. ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - OCTOBER 26: Lerone Murphy of England prepares to face Dan Ige in a ... More featherweight fight during the UFC 308 event at Etihad Arena on October 26, 2024 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) As much as we're anticipating UFC 314, it's not the next UFC event. UFC Vegas 105 is next, and it happens on Saturday, April 5 at the Apex. The show will be headlined by Lerone Murphy vs. Josh Emmett. Here is a look at the entire card. Be on the lookout for post-event coverage.
