Michigan Matters: Catching up with Bob Riney, Kevin Guskiewicz and Eric Poe
Henry Ford Health and Michigan State University are teaming up in Detroit at an innovative medical research center, which Bob Riney, CEO of Henry Ford Health, and Kevin Guskiewicz, MSU President, talked about on CBS Detroit's Michigan Matters. Riney talked about how it fit in with the innovative $3 billion project in the heart of the Motor City, which includes a new hospital, development and much more. Bob Riney and Kevin Guskiewiz Tim Lawlis/CBS Detroit Guskiewicz, who has run the East Lansing university for over a year, is also visiting Detroit this week as part of his bus tour to highlight MSU's impact across the Great Lakes State. Then Eric Poe, CEO of CURE Auto Insurance, discusses how the industry has changed in Michigan and how it impacts consumers. The company entered the Michigan market over three years ago. Michigan Matters: Trump's impact and Motor City sporting events
With President Trump's trip to Michigan on Tuesday to mark his 100th day in office, Glenn Stevens Jr., Executive Director of MichAuto, Mark Truby, Chief Communications Officer of Ford, and Bill Wild, CEO of Midwest Independent Retailers Association, appear on CBS Detroit's Michigan Matters and discuss the current state of business in Michigan. The trio also talked about how selectively using tariffs might help American companies. Then it's a focus on sports as Claude Molinari, President/CEO of Visit Detroit, and Dave Beachnau, Executive Vice President of Visit Detroit, talk about how the Motor City's reputation as a place for hosting major sporting events and conventions got a boost with the 2024 NFL Draft held last April. Michigan Matters: Tackling distracted driving issues
With April being Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Tricia Morrow, GM Engineering Group Manager, Crash Avoidance and Technology Strategy, and Dan Glaser, GM Driver Distraction Engineer, appear on CBS Detroit's Michigan Matters to discuss the latest in technology and safety features that can help ease the problem. Distracted driving killed at least 3,000 people and caused more than 400,000 injuries in the U.S. in 2024, according to NHTSA, as the problem is worse in summer months when more people are on the road. Morrow and Glaser talk about things that can distract drivers, such as using handheld phones while driving, fumbling with GPS and other things. Glaser highlighted growing technologies General Motors is employing tied to audio commands as one thing that can help the cause. Morrow also talked about how GM is working with organizations to help spread the word about keeping hands on the wheel and focusing on driving. Then, Michael Pugh, CEO of Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), a national organization that has invested billions in Detroit and other cities across America, appears to discuss their imprint. Pugh, born and raised in Detroit by a single mom, is an alum of Eastern Michigan University and also talked about his journey. LISC Detroit has helped invest hundreds of millions in Metro Detroit, which Pugh discussed. Michigan Matters: Spotlighting the Detroit Public Schools Community Foundation
It's a look at the Detroit Public Schools Community Foundation and how things are going as Kerrie Mitchell, CEO, appears on Michigan Matters to give an update. The organization has been providing opportunities for Detroit Public Schools Community students, and Mitchell talked about some of them. Then Tommey Walker Jr., a graduate of Cass Tech High School in Detroit, also appeared to talk about the company he and classmate Sean Williams started — Detroit Vs. Everybody — and a new effort to sell hoodies with well-known DPSCD school names that they are creating, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the DPSCD Foundation. Then MSU's Matt Grossmann and Tonya Schuitmaker, co-director of the Michigan Political Leadership Program, appear to talk about the lauded political training program, which includes 24 fellows each year. They will hold their epic annual fundraising dinner on Wednesday, April 23, at Lansing Center, when David Wasserman, of the Cook Political Report, appears with me to do a fireside chat. There are a few tickets still available. Grossman and Schuitmaker also talked about the political environment and its interesting impact on young people.
