Watching Dallas or Dynasty back in the day was to get a glimpse into a bigger, brighter world of skyscrapers, wide open spaces, the Oil Barons' Ball.
Depictions of the United States on screen these days are considerably less appealing. Long Bright River (Channel 4, Sunday, 10pm) is set in the homeless tent cities of Philadelphia, and stars Amanda Seyfried – you know, the one from Mamma Mia! – getting as far away from type as it's possible to imagine by playing Mickey Fitzpatrick, a young single mom and patrol cop who begins to suspect the women being found dead in the neighbourhood did not die of drug overdoses as thought but were murdered by a serial killer.
