He used the catchphrase "Don't ask the price, it's a 'penny'" to build his career after arriving with little money and minimal command of English. His little booth selling basic home goods was rapidly booming because of this simple idea and his diligent work. Michael teamed up with Dewhirst wholesalers' cashier Tom Spencer to help his expanding firm. This collaboration gave rise to "Marks & Spencer" and its initial Penny Bazaar locations, which helped the company take shape as we know it today. More than 15,000 purchases were made on the first day of trading.

Hottest fashion trends of 2025 Fabulous' Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend shares the biggest trends from the high street. The East/West Bag Baguette bags have had a good run, after returning from the 1990s' shoulders of Sarah Jessica Parker to modern-day fashion icons, like Hailey Bieber. In 2025, the East/West bag is a similar but elongated shape and has long, thin straps that are easy to throw over your shoulder. They've been on runway models' arms at nearly ever designer show - think Burberry, Givenchy and Bottega Veneta - and are hitting the high street now, too. Powder pink Bright fuchsia pink had its day after the release of Barbie in 2023 and now the more polished and expensive-looking pale shade is taking over for 2025. Pantone may say that it's the year of Mocha Mousse, but the catwalks say otherwise! From Prada to Erdem, the subtle look was all over the spring/summer catwalks, worn head-to-toe or on its own. If the sugary shade is too girly for you, then look to sharp suiting for a androgynous take on the colour. The shell jacket The '80s classic is back, but with a sleek and minimal new twist for 2025. We all know we're likely to see rain for most of spring, so your practical coat of choice should be a cagoule jacket. Depop revealed one of its big trend predictions for this year is retro sportswear, with surges already seen in '80s windbreakers'. Seen everywhere from the stylish streets of Copenhagen to the Miu Miu catwalk, now mums who have an emergency raincoat crumpled underneath their pushchair are very much in fashion! The turn-up jeans While the shape of jeans remains the same for this year and barrel-legs will still be everywhere, the way we're styling them is different. This season, transform your wide-leg, baggy denims into turn-ups. For this look, size doesn't matter, so while deep turn-ups are a hit from jean trend-leaders Citizens of Humanity, a slight fold is still just as good - but only as it's just one single fold. Peep-toe shoe Get your pedicures booked in sharpish, as this season your toes are the main event. After a long hiatus, the peep-toe has been welcomed back into the fashion fold, with brands like Hermes, Miu Miu and Tory Burch showing plain and embellished footwear in this style. From mules to pumps and clogs (yes, clogs will be around too!), there are lots of different styles that are set to sweep the high street. Sheer blouses See-through looks have always lived on the catwalk, but have rarely filtered into everyday life - until now. Designers Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford loved sheer looks on their S/S '25 catwalks and M&S even had sellout success with its black sheer pencil skirt last season. Expect to see more sheer looks lining supermarket aisles and high street shops in the form of skirts, tops and frocks. Meanwhile a fourth said: "Great easy to pull on beach dress that I will wear day and or night as a normal dress." "This dress is so comfortable and I think it is much more than a beach dress, can be worn anywhere,' claimed a fifth. Someone else added: 'This is the dress that keeps giving, perfect to wear to the airport and then for evening and then a third time to breakfast." Fabulous will pay for your exclusive stories. I'm a fashion editor who travels a lot - these are the comfiest airport outfits to wear this summer
You may have your summer packing list sorted. But have you thought about what to wear to the airport? I find you need various layers for early starts, killing time in stuffy terminals, chilly planes and stepping off into a wall of hot air at your destination. And not to mention the big tote to hold your bits and bobs at security or your duty free finds. Read on for the ultimate airport outfit guide. Co-ords The quickest way to look put together is with a co-ord. It will take minimal thinking to throw it on but it will garner maximum compliments. If you've got limited luggage opt for a matching set that you can wear in the heat when you get there. Free People is a specialist when it comes to top and trouser combinations - I really rate the indigo ruched Riley set (£118) and the cosy Julia sweater co-ord (£88). Baukjen's red linen bow-tie pairing will be airy and comfortable - don't stress about creasing, that's exactly what linen is supposed to do (top £129; trousers £139). Or if you prefer shorts, Nobody's Child cream and turquoise printed version will be perfect for travelling from the terminal to the beach – and it goes up to a size 24 (shirt £65; shorts £55). Free People Riley co-ord £118 Shop Nobody's Child co-ord £120 Shop Sport luxe If you're heading to a yoga retreat, a marathon destination or you simply prefer practicality, leggings or shorts and a soft bra will work for you. Vuori is my go-to for comfortable yet hard working fabrics that are a breeze to travel in. Its super soft Halo foldover pants and mini cropped hoodie come in a must-have chocolate brown (hoodie £76; bottoms £84). I also rate the All The Form bra and matching tie waist leggings in a jolly lemongrass shade (bra £70; leggings £110). Oner's cosy midweight hoodie is essential for battling freezing cold air-con (£55). Vuori sports bra £70 Shop Gymshark's vital range is made from technical material that works in all temperatures – and it's seamless which makes it just as lovely to sit in as it is to move in. The navy quarter zip and matching shorts are understated yet sleek (top £40; shorts £38). Baggy-balloon dresses Travelling without the restrictions of a waistband whilst still looking chic can be challenging. This is when you need a baggy, balloon dress (or a BBD). Hush's non restrictive 'air flow' scoop maxi looks like a dream to wear (£85). I also have my eye on this boho flutter-sleeve tiered maxi from Anthropologie. It will look great with bright trainers or sandals and most importantly you can move, sit and eat freely in it without feeling constricted (£149). Marks and Spencer's jersey printed version is a steal (£19.50). As is Primark's peach hued trapeze version – which even has handy pockets (£26). Primark midi dress £26 Shop M&S Collection Jersey Printed Midaxi Beach Dress £19.50 Shop Big bags I like to travel with a dual-purpose roomy tote that will also match my holiday wardrobe. For a city break, Demellier's chocolate suede tote is sleek and practical – especially if you're working. It's a big investment, but it fits an A4 notebook and a laptop, with various compartments for all your bits and bobs (£455). Or for a budget buy in this must-have shade of brown see Zara's woven eat-to-west shaped wonder (£59.99). For the beach, a lined raffia style will do nicely. Mango's natural fibre shopper is top of my list (£49.99). Or try H&M's embossed straw version, which looks far more expensive than it is. Carry-on To avoid faffing at the other end, I rarely check luggage unless I absolutely have to. The best carry-on suitcase I have invested in is Antler's expandable cabin bag (£185,). It comes in eight colours and it's one of the biggest carry ons you can get, which is still in accordance with most airlines' luggage restrictions (but always double check). Nere's Stori iteration is also brilliant for maximising on space and it's under £100 (£99). I have also tried Dunelm's sunshine yellow hard case and it does not disappoint – especially because it's £31.50.
