Midweek Update May 23 with Mike Bathke and Luke Hagen

May 23—MITCHELL — Mike Bathke was elected in June 2023 for first stint as a Mitchell city councilman. Bathke, who says he speaks from the heart during meetings, has regularly voiced his opinions and thoughts on major topics the City of Mitchell Government is facing despite being a new face on the council. After having his spot for nearly two years, Bathke says a lot of the decisions of the council are "deeply discussed" before meetings even begin. "I've actually been asked to vote a certain way on something, and I literally walked away from the other person who asked me to do it," said Bathke, who represents Ward 3. "I just could not believe they were asking me to do it, and I was new to this. And I thought, 'This is not what I signed up for.' I have my own constitutes and all the people of Mitchell to speak for, and I didn't want somebody telling me how to vote when I knew it was wrong." He encouraging more council members to get behind Mitchell Mayor Jordan Hanson, he's not in favor of a major Corn Palace renovation project and he thinks a new state prison would be beneficial to the Mitchell area. Hear from Bathke in this week's Midweek Update.

Mar. 18—MITCHELL — Mitchell was recognized at the Governor's Conference on Economic Development at the end of February. Afterward, District 20 Rep. Jeff Bathke, of Mitchell, a Republican, nominated the city for a commemoration. "It only takes one senator or representative to oppose it, because it's not something you vote on, you just say, 'I oppose it,' and it's gone," Bathke said. Find out why Mitchell didn't receive the commemoration, and hear Bathke talk about the eminent domain bill, the 100th legislative session, property taxes and much more in this week's Midweek Update.

Midweek Update Feb. 27 with Danielle Erdmann and Luke Hagen

Feb. 27—MITCHELL — Danielle Erdmann has taught for 19 years, 15 of which at Mitchell School District. She's a science teacher at Mitchell High School, so she's spent plenty of time at the decades-old building that's in its final year of use as the district completes its new high school construction across the road on Capital Street. Is she looking forward to moving out of the old high school? "I think the kids are really going to like it," she said, pointing out some of the inappropriate graffiti on her classroom's science tables. "All of our stuff over here (at the current facility) is kind of janky, our ceiling leaks, so I'm excited." Erdmann talks about her favorite memories in teaching, what keeps her students engaged and the future of teachers in South Dakota in this week's Midweek Update video.
