S.F. Bar Association seeks more immigration lawyers amid ICE arrests

Organizations are seeking more volunteer immigration attorneys in the San Francisco and Concord immigration courts as immigration officials make more arrests, the National Lawyers Guild of San Francisco said Friday. The organization, which posted the request on behalf of the Bar Association of San Francisco, said volunteer attorneys are needed 'now more than ever' to provide legal help to immigrants during Executive Office for Immigration Review dockets. The plea for help comes days after 15 people — including a 3-year-old child — were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during their scheduled check-ins at the agency's San Francisco office. Last week, four people were arrested at the San Francisco Immigration Court by ICE agents waiting in the lobby. The arrests marked a first in taking immigrants into custody who were actively and legally attending immigration court, said advocates, who vowed to fight the detentions. Among those arrested at the courthouse was Miguel Angel Lopez, a father of three and grandfather of one, who had been living in Livermore for 27 years and pursuing his permanent residency, his wife, Rosa Lopez, said. The National Lawyers Guild said ICE officials are moving to have immigration cases dismissed in order to arrest and rapidly deport people. The Bar Association of San Francisco asked lawyers who are willing to volunteer — as legal representatives in immigration courts or for unrepresented immigrants who call the organization's Attorney of the Day hotline — to contact them.

CAS confirms doping ban for Colombian rider Miguel Angel Lopez

– Colombian cyclist Miguel Angel Lopez, third in the Giro and the Vuelta in 2018, will have to serve his four-year ban for doping in full after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected his appeal on May 7. CAS rubber-stamped the suspension imposed by the sport's governing body the International Cycling Union (UCI) on the 31-year-old in May 2024 – backdated to July 25, 2023. Lopez, who won the Tour of Switzerland in 2016 and the Tour of Catalonia in 2019, tested positive for Menotropin – a hormone which shares properties with growth hormone – and was found to be in possession of it during the 2022 Giro. 'The Panel is comfortably satisfied that UCI has discharged its burden of proof and unanimously ruled that Mr Lopez possessed a prohibited substance,' read the statement from CAS. 'The Appeal filed by Mr Lopez is dismissed and the decision issued by the UCI is fully upheld. Mr Lopez remains suspended for a period of ineligibility of four years, commencing on July 25, 2023.' Lopez's suspension is backdated to his provisional suspension by the UCI. The UCI suspended him after obtaining evidence from police in Spain and the Spanish National Anti-Doping Organisation. Up to when he was first suspended, Lopez had been riding for third division Team Medellin-EPM, after being fired by the Astana outfit in December 2022. Astana claimed he had links to Marcos Maynar, a Spanish doctor at the heart of a doping investigation at the time by the International Testing Agency. He had already been provisionally suspended for a week by his team after being arrested at Madrid airport in July 2022. In athletics, Brazilian Daniel Do Nascimento, who holds the marathon area record for the Americas, has been banned for five years after two positive doping tests, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said on May 7. The AIU ban is backdated to July 15, 2024, with all results scrubbed from July 4 of the same year, the date of his first positive test for prohibited anabolic steroids rostanolone, metenolone and nandrolone. Do Nascimento, 26, set an Americas area record of 2hr 04min 51sec at the Seoul marathon in 2022. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
