White Sox sign Dan Altavilla, place Miguel Castro on IL
May 30 - The Chicago White Sox agreed to terms with relief pitcher Dan Altavilla on a one-year, $1 million contract ahead of Friday's series opener at Baltimore. The White Sox made room on the 26-man roster by placing fellow right-hander Miguel Castro on the 15-day injured list with a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. Altavilla, 32, was released by the White Sox on May 24 after going 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 20 bullpen appearances at Triple-A Charlotte this season. Altavilla is 8-8 with a 4.36 ERA and one save in 124 career games (one start) for the Seattle Mariners (2016-20), San Diego Padres (2020-21) and Kansas City Royals (2024). Castro, 30, sustained the season-ending knee injury during the ninth inning of Wednesday's 9-4 road victory against the New York Mets. Castro has no decisions and a 7.50 ERA in six relief appearances this year. He is 22-28 with a 4.24 ERA and 14 saves in 425 games (four starts) over 11 seasons with seven teams. --Field Level Media

Texas homeowners battle rising insurance rates, lawmakers offer no help
The Brief Over the past few years, Texas homeowners have seen their insurance premiums increase anywhere from 20%-60% year over year. Severe weather events and rising repair costs are key drivers of these increases, making homeownership more challenging for many. Despite the problem, Texas lawmakers have provided little to no help. DALLAS - Texas homeowners pay some of the highest insurance premiums in the country, and rates are increasing by double digits year over year. And there's not much relief in sight from the Texas Legislature. Big picture view The biggest challenge for homeowners and those who want to be homeowners is often not the price of the home. It's the property taxes and the cost of homeowners' insurance, which is required by mortgage companies. Severe weather in Texas – from hailstorms and tornadoes to pipe-bursting freezes – leads to billions of dollars in insurance claims each year. Then there's inflation driving up the cost to repair or replace property. While the Texas Legislature is providing property tax relief in the form of higher homestead exemptions, none of the bills filed this year that focused on homeowners' insurance will reach the governor's desk. Meanwhile, appraisal values have spiked, and insurance companies continue to raise rates. Local perspective Single dad Miguel Castro has been looking to buy a home for a few years now. "Yeah, I mean, they've doubled. I first started looking back in 2022, right after COVID. And back then it was going to be, I think, $1,000 to $1,200 for the year," he said. "Now it's looking like maybe $2,200 for the year. So that's double." Doreen Diego moved to Texas in 2019. Then after buying a home in a Denton neighborhood in 2021, her rates started going up. "We started at $1,200 a year. The next year, which would have been 2020, not much of an increase at all, very minimal," she said. "And I realized we went from $1,200 to $1,700. Still within reason. The next year we went to $2,700. The next year we went to $3,700. And our renewal just came up this month. We just paid it at $4,700." Diego said it's something people everywhere are talking about, but no one seems to be taking any action. What they're saying Realtor Ashley Gentry said the issue comes up often in conversations with prospective home buyers. "How about let's get the insurance checked on before we do any other due diligence on the home. That's the first thing during your option period that I'm telling my buyers to do. Just make sure they can actually afford the insurance premiums and it doesn't price them out of the home before they can even close on it," she said. Gentry said people who already own homes are seeing premiums increase anywhere from 20% to 60% year over year. She thinks it might take several legislative sessions before any meaningful changes are made. "I think that even more so than understanding why we're in this predicament, there needs to be a recalibration all together of what the insurance companies are doing," Diego added. The Source FOX 4 reporter Shaun Rabb talked to Realtor Ashley Gentry, homeowner Doreen Diego and potential homeowner Miguel Castro to gather information for this story. Some of the details also come from past news coverage of the Texas Legislature.

White Sox reliever Miguel Castro injures right knee against Mets
NEW YORK (AP) — Chicago White Sox reliever Miguel Castro injured his right knee Wednesday late in a 9-4 win over the New York Mets. The right-hander entered with light rain falling at the start of the ninth inning and hustled to cover first base on Juan Soto's weak grounder to the edge of the infield grass. Castro caught the toss from first baseman Miguel Vargas and beat Soto to first for the second out, but appeared to jam his right foot into the side of the bag. The 6-foot-7 Castro initially got up and limped a few steps before being helped off the field with his arms draped around two athletic trainers. New York outfielder Brandon Nimmo tapped Castro — who pitched for the Mets from 2020-21 — on the back. Castro was on crutches in the clubhouse after the game. He will undergo testing and be evaluated further, the White Sox said. 'You just don't want to see any of your guys down like that, obviously in a lot of pain,' manager Will Venable said. 'Just hope he comes out on the right side of this thing.' Bryce Wilson came on and was given all the time he needed to warm up. He allowed Pete Alonso's RBI double and walked Brett Baty before striking out Mark Vientos to end the game. The 30-year-old Castro has a 7.50 ERA in six appearances for Chicago this season. ___ AP MLB:

Benintendi's big day sends White Sox to 9-4 win over Mets
Andrew Benintendi had a season-high four RBIs and finished a double shy of the cycle Wednesday, powering the Chicago White Sox to a 9-4 win over the New York Mets that prevented a three-game sweep. Benintendi laced a two-run single in the first inning and an RBI triple in the sixth before hitting his sixth homer in the eighth. Lenyn Sosa also had three hits and Mike Tauchman provided a two-run double for the White Sox, who avoided being swept for the seventh time this season. Brandon Eisert (2-0), the second of five Chicago pitchers, earned the win with 1 1/3 hitless innings. With light rain falling, Miguel Castro exited with two outs in the ninth after injuring his right knee covering first base on Juan Soto's groundout. Castro needed to be helped off the field and was on crutches in the clubhouse afterward. He will undergo testing and be evaluated further. Mark Vientos hit a three-run homer for the Mets, whose four-game winning streak ended. Pete Alonso had an RBI double in the ninth. The nine runs allowed were a season high for the Mets. Soto was 0 for 4 and didn't get a ball out of the infield as his batting average dipped to .224. Soto hasn't homered since May 9, a span of 75 plate appearances. White Sox starter Shane Smith allowed three runs and walked five in 3 2/3 innings. Mets right-hander Griffin Canning (5-2) gave up five runs — three earned — while walking four in three innings. Benintendi singled home Tauchman and Miguel Vargas one pitch after Vargas' one-out double in the first. Vargas has doubled in five straight games, the longest streak by a White Sox player since Adam Dunn in May 2011. Both teams are off Thursday. White Sox RHP Sean Burke (3-5, 4.33 ERA) starts Friday in Baltimore. Mets LHP David Peterson (3-2, 2.79) pitches at home against Colorado LHP Kyle Freeland (0-7, 5.86). ___ AP MLB:
